In the end, I went with season 4 of The Wire.

Brief spoilers for that and ep 2 of True Blood season 1 behind cut.

In other news, I got my Darla fic back from my beta, and though there is still work to do on it, she mostly liked it, so I'm happy. :) I've taken next week off work and hope to polish it up then.

Have just re-read this post and I really am just spamming, aren't I?

Fox are to air all 13 commissioned episodes of Dollhouse.

Article here.

I'm very pleased about this and hope Joss can bookend the show satisfactorily (as it seems extremely unlikely to me that Fox will commission more episodes).

The Sci-Fi Channel in the UK is starting to air season 2 from next week. I still shan't see it of course, since I don't get the Sci-Fi Channel, but though it's nice to join in the squee (or lack of it) while it's ongoing, maybe I'm better off being always late to the party, especially where this show's concerned? I can imagine the Dollhouse fandom (if there is one) could be particularly prone to wank (Eliza's outfits on their own must have created shedloads of it), and I think I would rather avoid that.

In the meantime, now I've finished Dollhouse season 1, I'm wondering what to watch next. I was thinking of rewatching Being Human, but I don't know if I'm in the mood for it. Likewise, not sure if I'm in the moood for more Babylon 5. I fell behind in [livejournal.com profile] ruuger's rewatch and have stalled at the end of season 1. Maybe I will, though. Or I could nerve myself up to watch season 4 of The Wire. Didn't need to nerve myself up for the other seasons, but because this one is about the schools, I'm pretty sure it'll be quite upsetting.

TV-wise, there is not a lot on. Spoilers within for Flash Forward and True Blood season 1 (should anyone else in the whole universe apart from me need those).

Okay, I've watched Epitaph One now. Thoughts behind cut, and please don't spoiler me for season 2.

Guess you can tell when I get serious about something, when I go to the trouble of uploading an icon? I've now watched eps 8-12 of Dollhouse season 1, and have to admit, I loved them, so it's probably just as well I booked my seat on the hell bus many years ago.

Before watching the eps, I'd spent the afternoon wrestling with my Darla fic. Have now finished the third draft and the situation is as follows:

* I think the POV character is now unpleasant enough, or almost
* The end is still so c**p I am still very reluctant to subject my beta to it
* I'm still not sure what I'm trying to say about Darla in this story, and until I work it out, the end is likely to remain c**p. Aargh!

Spoilers for Dollhouse eps 8-12 behind cut, and please don't spoiler me for ep 13 or season 2.

So glad it's Friday! Have seen my a**se so many times at work this past week that it's a wonder I can still face forward.

Anyway, watched ep 8 of Dollhouse last night and might watch ep 9 this evening. More on that in another post (still enjoying, btw). Also, sorry that I've not yet responded to everyone on my post about character identification. I will get around to that after I've done this.

So - went down the comic shop yesterday and came back with ta-dah! Planetary the final issue, the latest Authority (my favourite comic at the moment), plus the latest Angel and Buffy comics. Comic Shop Boy - after a dull couple of months - was in fine form. As I was paying for my comics, his counterpart Record Shop Boy came in wanting some change for £20 notes. Of course, Record Shop Boy doesn't work in a record shop as such. It's more of an acid groove beat whatchamacallit shop (I am way too old to know what it really is) but Record Shop Boy is easier to say. He is way shorter than Comic Shop Boy, has a rather limp mohican, and loads of piercings in his nose and lips. He also wears thick, horn-rimmed glasses and looks like he wouldn't say boo to a goose.

Comic Shop Boy and Record Shop Boy started commiserating with each other about how hard it is to take shop takings into the bank and get change etc when you look like they do (Comic Shop Boy looks a bit like Jayne from Firefly but with less hair, and always wears faded black t-shirts with the names of obscure thrash metal bands on them). Comic Shop Boy, who has a bit of a temper, explained to Record Shop Boy that he was Doing It All Wrong, and that what he wanted to do was not take that s**t from those c**ts (yes, he did say this in front of me, it's like having a very foul-mouthed part-time son) but glare at them and ask if they 'wanted to take it outside.'

Record Shop Boy: It's all right for you. I just don't look mean enough. (This is quite true). The £50 notes are the worst. Have one of those and you're sunk. They give you the third degree.
Comic Shop Boy: You wanna get violent, mate. An elbow in the gut. Believe me. Works for me every time.
Me (to Record Shop Boy): It's simple. Just take him with you (indicating Comic Shop Boy). Then you'll be fine.
Record Shop Boy (smiling as if this had never occurred to him) Yeah! Yeah!

At this point, Comic Shop Bloke (who is a bit of a geezer) came back and told us how he used to collect £50 notes, and collected and collected them until he had £10,000 pounds all in £50 notes, which he used to buy the comic shop from some bloke who took the money and ran.

This is probably true.

On to the review. Spoilers for both Buffy and Angel comics behind cut.

So, first paper read through of the Darla fic raised the following points:

* Some of it is okay
* The POV character needs to be nastier
* The end is embarrassingly c**p.
* For goodness' sake, work out what exactly you want this story to say about Darla, can't you?

Fortunately, I have another three weeks to make it work, because something tells me I'm going to need every moment of them.

Expect more whinging on the subject later. In the meantime, you remember that 5 Unpopular Fannish Opinions meme that was doing the rounds a while back? I didn't do it of course, as I very rarely do memes and never while they're current, but while walking home, trying not to angst over the Darla fic (which was already displacement activity for not exploding with fury over the latest idiocies perpetrated by the minions of the Deathstar - don't ask), I started thinking about my 5 most unpopular (at least I think they are) fannish opinions.

More behind cut.

So, had a very quiet weekend. As in, kept falling asleep. I think it must be fall out from the previous two weekends, but I've been so bloody tired I could hardly keep my eyes open!

Feeling a bit better today and have just finished the second draft of my Darla ficathon story. Unfortunately, it is still pretty s**te, which is worrying at this stage. The only thing I can do now is print it up, because somehow it's much easier to see where I'm going wrong when something is on a piece of paper than on a monitor screen. Anyone else find that?

Also managed to watch ep 7 of Dollhouse season 1, spoilers behind cut.

...it's just bloody typical that I finally find another Jossian product I like (after the serial disappointment of Firefly/Serenity, the Buffy comic and Dr Horrible) only to see on Whedonesque that season 2 might get cancelled before all 13 episodes have even been made, let alone aired. :gloom: Must say also, the attitude of some people - I hope it's cancelled so Joss can start making stuff I like instead - pees me off a little.

Time for another Calendar Post (the proper one this time), and this month in my [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 fanart calendar, it's Gunn month. Well, to be completely accurate, it's J August Richards In Some Other Show Looking Utterly Yummy in a Suit Month, but let's not quibble about that.

I've only managed a drabble this time, I'm afraid, RL being how it currently is. Hope you like.

Setting: the suburban hell dimension, as seen in Underneath in AtS season 5
Rating: PG
Beta: Yes, I got this one beta'ed. Ignorance is not bliss. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey.

Atonement.

Link here to a slightly tongue-in-cheek article in today's Guardian about Brit actors being cast in American TV shows, as Americans.

I'd been going to make some facetious comparison with American GIs coming to Britain during WW2 (overpaid, oversexed and over here), but in fact the Brit actors are not like the GIs. They are more like the influx of Polish plumbers to the UK back in pre-credit crunch days, in that they are not only very good at their job and very hard workers, but they also come very cheap.

Apparently, they are also getting better at doing the accent, though even those who aren't so good, like Dominic West, seem to get away with it. Certainly, two of the three Brit actors (Joseph Fiennes and Sonia Walger) in the first episode of Flash Forward, which was shown here on Monday night, could have fooled anyone this side of the Pond that they were really American (if they didn't know who they were already) and possibly on the other side as well.

Speaking of Flash Forward (spoilers for ep 1 within)

Using this icon in honour of the fact that I can't seem to open my flist at the moment without seeing mention of poor old Riley. I think it states very succinctly what it is about the character that irritates a lot of people. Re: the other topic under discussion here and there, I haven't a lot to say, except that people should remember it's only a comic.

Yeah, yeah. I know perfectly well I can get up a good head of steam about trivialities on occasion, but you see, that just shows I know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, not going to talk about that, but about Dollhouse season 1 ep 6, which I watched this evening. Spoilers, obviously, and please don't spoiler me for anything later.

First of all, apologies to the people who left comments on my post about concrit which I still haven't responded to. I had every intention of getting back to you yesterday but RL intervened and I didn't get the chance. So sorry. I will answer at some point, but not today either, as knackered. Didn't get much in the way of writing done today, as I'd hoped. Have still to start serious revision of the Darla fic and have nothing as yet for the next calendar post. Did watch ep 5 of Dollhouse season 1, though. Spoilers behind cut.

Did a bit of fic writing today for the first time in about 10 days (oh writing, how I've missed you!). Was not at all pleased with the results, which more resemble someone's laundry list than they do vampire porn. Shall have to rewrite completely (fortunate it was only half a page) while feeling grumpy about the fact that this story was going so well until going away disrupted the flow.

Naturally, this leads me on to the subject of concrit.
