Game of Thrones Season 8 Ep 4

I don't have a whole lot to say about this episode....

Spoilers behind cut.

...mainly because I found what happened to the second dragon and to Missandei so upsetting that I just don't want to talk about it very much.

It also makes me sad that all Dany's emotional support has been ripped away. It feels like the story has boxed her into a corner. Cersei's giving her no option but to walk away or to follow in her mad father's footsteps, and she's not going to walk away.

Well, of course, you could say that the fact that she's not going to walk away means she's not fit to be queen, but she's only in this position in the first place because she agreed to do what Cersei wouldn't do and help defeat the Night King.

And of course there's still more down to come when Dany finds out - as she inevitably will- that John did tell his family about his real identity, and that it now won't be long before the rumour mill makes sure everyone knows, just like Dany said would happen.

I feel really sorry for her, in case it wasn't obvious, and I don't want her to go mad and for everyone to hate her.

There were nice things in the episode, of course -notably Brienne's brief happiness with Jaime. I really, really hope he's heading back to Kingslanding not to support Cersei but to kill her. I know Arya's heading that way too, though, so I'm reasonably reassured that if Jaime doesn't do it, Arya will. Likewise that the Hound/Mountain showdown will happen.

I'm also a little hopeful that we won't see Sam and Gilly again, because that will mean that at least Sam had a happy ending, which he deserves IMO. Oh, and Ghost has gone to a good home too, so that's something.

Only two episodes left.

Trivial stuff:

Not really so trivial, I suppose. I honestly wasn't expecting the episode with the big battle against the Night King to seem like a jolly romp in retrospect, but this episode was such a downer that that's how I feel at the moment.

It does all feel kind of rushed. I mean, they have hinted that Dany has a bit of a mad side to her, but it feels like they just now decided that she is going to go crazy in these last two episodes when this could have had a better arc.

Just two more episodes, ready to wrap this up, for better or worse.

SAAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

The finale is going to be painful. And I know they are going to do some kind of twist because now it will be too obvious if Jon wins the thrown. Or is given the thrown, as the case may be.

I completely agree with your assessment of the episode.

I was highly annoyed with the deaths of the dragon and Missandra. I loved both. And dang it, if all the dragons die, I'm going to be REALLY upset. I think two of the direwolves survived -- Ayra's and Jon's. I lost track of Bran's.

It also makes me sad that all Dany's emotional support has been ripped away. It feels like the story has boxed her into a corner. Cersei's giving her no option but to walk away or to follow in her mad father's footsteps, and she's not going to walk away.

YES! Totally agree. I'm annoyed that they are making Dany the power-hungry mad ruler, and Jon the good ruler, who doesn't want it. Also, I like Dany better than Sansa and Jon, and always have -- what they are doing with her isn't working for me. And for all of her emotional support to leave her...doesn't bode well.

I agree - Sam and Gilly we won't see again, nor will we see the free folk, Thormund, or Ghost. They've survived. Bran and Sansa will also survive. I'm willing to lay odds that so will Jon Snow.

Everyone else, I'm not so sure about.

I keep hoping the Dragon will eat him or burn him alive. He'd begun to grow on me a bit during S6 and S7, but around S8...I just thought, you are such a wet noodle, you don't do anything and you let people make all your decisions for you.

I loathe what they are doing to Dany.

I think Varys turning coats on her is miserable and also bad for the realm. Cersei is purposefully loading the red keep with civilians so that Dany either has to back down or become a mass murderer. Varys has an army of spies within the red keep. He should help to arrange an assassination and throw the gates open wide. If Jon was leading them, he would only face the same dilemma.

Jon is not a better ruler, just because he doesn't want to be. Dany is smarter than him and does feel an obligation to the people she rules.

I'm team burn them all but the way they are deconstructing her and the way people are perceiving her as just power hungry things will go down the drain.

I liked the Jaime Brienne thing, though they were pretty obvious about not knowing how to do sex scenes if they can't just show off tits and asses.

From what you are saying, if they are pulling away all Dany's support, boxing in her options, showing more and more of her flaws, and making the audience doubt her - that means she is heading to be the winner. You can't have a triumphant last minute reversal if there is nothing to reverse.

Ah. Oh well.

Felt to me like the showrunners were putting everyone into a downward spiral where they all splinter into their respective tribes (especially upsetting given the success of their joint enterprise against the Night King) just so they can build it all back up again to end with a glorious climax (says she nervously). So we now have Dany looking weakened enough to push her over the edge of sanity, Jon looking bewildered as ever, Sansa appearing to hate the new world she has helped create, Varys turning traitor to Dany (and even Tyrion doubting her), Arya leaving the home she craved so desperately - apparently for good. Even Jaime, who was so eager for redemption, has turned his back on happiness and legged it back to where the danger is greatest. It's never felt more obvious that the showmasters really do see the characters as puppets, and we the audience as easily manipulable marks. The fanservice feels a bit contemptuous at this point, too - I wasn't altogether convinced by the Jaime/Brienne relationship going in that direction, for example. I'm watching now for the spectacle and to see what happens in the end, but the joy has gone out of it. Unless Arya gets to kill Cersei - I'd still get a kick out of that. Some payback for silly old Ned Stark and the rest of his doomed clan.
