Now why couldn't there have been someone like that getting their honorary degree when M graduated last year, instead of that boring retired policeman?

OH MY POOR HEART . I work at Leeds Met. WHY I WAS NOT THERE at the Graduation Ceremony AND NO-ONE TOLD ME HE WAS THERE AT THE CEREMONIES. OUR BOSSES SURELY HAVE WRONG PRIORITIES.

The point of honourary degrees is not to honour the recipient, it is to ensure all the parents of the undergrads are bored rigid and in a comma of lethargy by the time their little darling crosses the stage, so there are no unseemly cheers or catcalls.

Well, it didn't work at M's graduation. Plenty of catcalls in spite of the boring policeman. At least Alexander Skarsgard would have been entertaining.
