shapinglight: credit to me (Season 2 Kovacs)
S went away for a couple of days so I did something I very rarely do and binge-watched something on TV. This was a re-watch of season 1 of Altered Carbon followed by all of season 2.

Spoilers behind cut.

shapinglight: (The Americans)
So, a post about The Americans - IMO, one of the best TV series ever made. Up there with The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad - all those shows that are always mentioned when people talk about the third - ie. the current- golden age of American TV (only just found out it's called that).

I haven't really anything new or interesting to say about the show, I don't think. But having re-watched all six seasons of it over a period of about two months I'm not quite ready to let it go again just yet.

Spoilers for The Americans behind cut. Also brief spoilers for Picard.

TV stuff

shapinglight: (Gentleman Jack)
So, I realised there was actually more to my 2019 TV viewing than Lucifer season 4 - yay!, Carnival Row - mostly yay! and Game of Thrones season 8 - yeurch!

Slight spoilers behind cut for Gentleman Jack and His Dark Materials, plus mention of a couple of other things. Also proper spoilers for Messiah, which is actually 2020.

shapinglight: (Sacred Games)
My TV watching this summer has been pretty sporadic, what with one thing or another.

Spoilers behind cut for Sacred Games and not really spoilers for Carnival Row.

Good Omens

shapinglight: (Good Omens)
I thought I ought to write a review of Good Omens,(on the principle that for most of my time on LJ/DW I've written reviews of fannish things I've watched so I feel I should carry on), but I'm struggling with what to say beyond that I enjoyed it.

Spoilers behind cut.

Haven't had any 'net time this week until today, so while I have the chance I just want to say a quick word about Star Trek Discovery season 2.

I just finished watching season 1 of The Umbrella Academy today.

In other TV news, I'm still enjoying Star Trek: Discovery a lot. They've really found their groove now, I think.

I'm also enjoying my Lucifer rewatch. Now half way through season 2- and still no official word of when season 4 will be up on Netflix. Oh well.
shapinglight: (The Expanse - Naomi and Holden)
I finally got around to watching this. Thoughts (with spoilers) behind cut.

shapinglight: (Star Trek Discovery)
I just watched the first episode of the new season of Star Trek: Discovery. I enjoyed it, but I'm pretty certain all the people who loathed the first season are going to loathe this too. Oh well.

In other TV-watching news, I'm still working my way through season 2 of The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, which I'm absolutely loving, and the current series of The Good Place, likewise. Nothing else to report really.

Oh, one thing - according to Tom Ellis on Twitter (and I guess he should know, but I'm still waiting to hear it from someone official), Netflix will be showing Lucifer season 4 in the UK. All the previous seasons will then become available on UK Netflix too. Until then, we can continue to watch them on Amazon Prime.

This seems weird to me. Does it seem weird to anyone else?

Normally this time of year, I'd try and do a post about my fandom activities of the year before, including any fanfic I'd written, but since I wrote no fanfic last year and didn't do anything fannish, there doesn't seem much point. ;)

So here instead is a post about TV stuff I really enjoyed in 2018.

Speaking of Amazon Prime (which we sort of were), I discovered the other day that all seven seasons of BtVS are now available on it. So I've started watching. Only got to the third episode of season 1, but am sucked in enough again to go and re-read what I thought about those episodes back in 2015, when we were doing the (sadly, never completed) re-watch on [community profile] fantas_magoria. I think I was too kind to the first two episodes. They really are not good. However, I still love Witch, the episode which first made me sit up and take notice of the show way back when.
shapinglight: (Uhtred season 3)
I finished watching this on Monday.

Spoilers behind cut.

For those of you without Netflix, according to Amazon, the season is coming out on DVD/Blu Ray, which is good news. That'll become less and less the case as time passes, I suspect, so grab it while you can.

shapinglight: (The Good Place2)
Since coming back, I've been trying to catch up with TV stuff I'd missed, plus anything new that seemed of interest.

Vague spoilers for some of them behind cut, including BBC dramas The Bodyguard, Black Earth Rising, Informer and The Little Drummer Girl, also Doctor Who and The Good Place.

In other TV news, The Last Kingdom season 3 will go up on Netflix on Saturday.

Looking forward to that. Also looking forward to The Marvellous Mrs Maisel season 2, which goes up on Amazon on December 5th.

Still no news about who will air season 4 of Lucifer in the UK.

I'm also really excited about this Loki TV series starring Tom Hiddleston, even though I haven't the least clue how I'll ever watch it.

Versailles

Versailles ended on Monday night.

What else appears to have ended is the heatwave. We actually had rain today - not much, but more than we've had for...I can't remember how long. Anyone else experienced this weird phenomenon of water falling from the skies?
shapinglight: (Westworld logo)
I did the disappearing thing again - partly because, as usual, I've been gadding about from place to place a lot, and partly because (as usual these days), I feel I have nothing of interest to say. :(

The last few days, though, there's been a third reason, which is that I've been binge-watching (something I very rarely do) season 2 of Westworld.

Spoilers for Westworld behind cut. Also brief mention of Versailles season 3 and Picnic at Hanging Rock.

In completely unrelated news, I've been missing my fanfic writings days somewhat. Saw [personal profile] petzipellepingo pimping the IWRY marathon today and realised I've missed all the ficathons for two years now - Seasonal Spuffy, Summer of Giles etc. Oh well.

When it comes to IWRY, I'm pretty sure I didn't have another Bangel story in me anyway.

Final bird/nature pics post after this.

I'm going away for a few days on Thursday and am at K's all day tomorrow, so shall be around even less than usual for the next week.

Before I go, a few quick words about other TV stuff.

Brief spoilers behind cut for Legion season 2, Jessica Jones season 2 and Versailles season 3.

Legion has been renewed for season 3, despite the fact the ratings are terrible.

I'm very pleased about this. It is a great show - a work of art really.
shapinglight: (The Americans)
...which we weren't really, but anyway, The Americans wrapped up this week.

I belong to a wonderful community here on DW that has been discussing the series from the beginning and have said most of what I have to say on there, but just want to say on my own journal that The Americans has been superlative. It's hardly put a foot wrong in six whole seasons (I say hardly, there have been a few things not so great, but they haven't detracted from the whole) and it ended as it's gone along.

Why it hasn't won a host of TV awards I'll never know. IMO, it's one of the best TV series I've ever seen. What's more, because of its period setting it'll never, ever date.

Wonderful stuff. If you've yet to discover it, I envy you, because I wish I could watch it for the first time again.

That said, it'll bear repeated viewing. And I intend to do just that very soon.
shapinglight: (The Expanse - Chrisjen)
Well, it's official. Amazon has renewed The Expanse for season 4. I am really, really pleased, of course, but have to admit I would be far more pleased if it was Lucifer, even though I know (intellectually) that The Expanse is a much better show.

But I am pleased.

Yet again, many apologies for all those unanswered comments.
