TW Miracle Day ep 3

shapinglightOkay, this is probably the only time I'm going to d/l an ep. Mostly, I'm content to wait for the BBC version. However, I didn't want to feel I'd missed out on anything so I made an exception for this episode.

I enjoyed it. It had its bonkers moments, but they were arguably less bonkers than all the transatlantic hi-jinks on the plane in ep 2. Plus, it had some good character stuff, including the scene that I d/l'ed the episode to see - ie. the intercut Rex/Doctor Wotsit Jack/Generic Gay Hunk sex scenes, which did let us see deeper into Jack's emotional state, but really more in his misfire phone conversation with Gwen the morning after than in the scene itself. He's full of self-doubt and blames himself for everything. Got it. He's also kidding himself (and not very well) if he thinks Gwen will choose him over Rhys and Anwen.
In actual fact, I haven't a lot more to say, beyond that I hope the villains of the piece will turn out to be a little more than just Big Pharma wanting to make more profit, because if that's the case, I can't help feeling that making the whole human race unkillable is rather going to extremes.
I like the doctor character a lot. Also Gwen, who is great. Not so keen on Esther, and really, really not keen on Oswald Danes. We're not meant to be, I know, but I still don't understand why PhiCorp would think recruiting Danes was a good idea, given that everyone hates him. Or they did. By the end of the episode, they're beginning to go the other way, which I still find inexplicable even though the general populace weren't privy to Danes's confession to Jack. Also, is Jane E channelling David Fury, do you think? Seems to me the large lady at the end who gets all fangirly over Danes and asks Jack if he's seen him is supposed to be a comment on 'those women who write to serial killers in prison and then marry them.' :rolls eyes:
Apart from that, the main thing I noticed in the ep was shoes. Yes, shoes - specifically women's shoes. As in, apart from Gwen, who is wearing sensible boots, all the female characters - even the doctor - were wearing the most absurd stiletto thin nine inch heels, especially Esther, though bizarrely, even with them on, the actress was barely as tall as Eve Myles who is - and I've met her in person, so I know - a teeny, slight little thing. In other words, the actress playing Esther - no offence to her acting- is another size 0 midget. How depressing.
Anyway, the shoes (apart from Gwen's) are silly. So there. And yay! for Gwen for bucking the trend, though I suppose she only gets away with it because if she wore shoes like the others she would tower over them and it would look silly. Also, I wish Eve Myles wouldn't pout. Stop it, Eve!
ETA: Should probably have mentioned that I thought the 'Britain and America are two countries divided by a common language' (or whatever the expression is) repartee was a teeny bit silly. We see enough American TV over here for Gwen to have known the stuff Esther was telling her already.

Date: 2011-07-24 01:46 pm (UTC)I remember "meeting" several actors from BtVS at a con years ago and being astonished at how tiny they all were. Do you suppose, in addition to pounds, the camera adds height? lol As a short person myself, it's kind of nice to find out these larger than life screen characters are actually my size - just younger, prettier and more talented. :)

Seeing Jack in action picking up a man was fun, and watching him accept that the answer (and remorse) he was hoping to find in Danes wasn't going to happen was heartwrenching. As was his convo with Gwen.
I agree that was good stuff, though I have a hard time caring much about Jack.
And yeah, the impossibly high heels are bothering the hell out of me. And have been since the epi where Esther went running down a hall in her high heels. Seriously? A doctor who's on her feet all day is going to wear shoes that would kill her after ten minutes?
I know it's probably the same in most American shows, but this is the first time it's really struck home to me. It's the contrast between Gwen and the others, I think. That scene where the doctor is sitting on the steps and Evil Pharma Woman comes teetering over to her in those impossible heels, and then you see that the doctor is also wearing them? Ridiculous!
And re: short people on telly - I think there are a lot of them. We BtVS fans tend to think of Charisma Carpenter being tall and relatively normal sized, don't we, because she looks so much bigger and more grown up than the others in the early seasons. Well, when I met her in person at Collectormania a few years back, I discovered she too is a teeny, weeny thing, which suggests SMG and AH are also midgets.

Date: 2011-07-24 04:08 pm (UTC)Yes, that scene on the steps was a fine example of stupid shoes. I don't think you see as much of that on other shows, though. Drs and nurses wear sensible shoes to work in, and so do most female police if they aren't doing the obligatory "dress like a prostitute" undercover stuff. The women on our morning news/talk shows always wear incredible heels on the set, but I've noticed that when they go out on a story, they dress more appropriately. I guess some people don't mind. My sister - only younger by 2 yrs - wears heels I don't even remember how to walk in all the time when she's working or going out. I'd be in tears after ten minutes (if I hadn't already fallen down on my way into the restaurant) if I tried to wear heels that high for anything but sitting in a chair with my legs crossed gracefully. *g*

Date: 2011-07-25 03:12 pm (UTC)Unless she's lost a fair bit of weight since early BtVS days, which is possible, SMG has, she isn't even that curvy in person. It's the contrast. Same with Tara. Apparently, Amber Benson is also a wee little thing in RL, she just looks curvy next to Alyson Hannigan.
You know, somehow knowing the ankle breakers aren't mandatory for female characters in other shows makes it even worse. Why on earth did they do it, I wonder?

Date: 2011-07-25 03:14 pm (UTC)Well, it certainly was that, but also a lot less graphic than the het sex. In fact, given the fuss the BBC are making, there wasn't a lot to it.
Also, re: what we were talking about on your LJ, that dramatisation of The Night Watch the other week included fairly graphic scenes of f/f sex (with lots of partial nudity), and that was shown just after the watershed. It's the old double standard again.
