Intervention
Nov. 5th, 2011 11:50 pmIntervention was next up. I'm going to watch one more and then I'm going to bed.
Still love this ep, though some of the intercutting between the serious stuff and the Spike/Buffybot hi-jinks are a little jarring.
Speaking of which, it's really sweet (in an icky way) that Spike wanted his robot programmed to be an awful lot more than just his sex slave (such a contrast in retrospect with what Warren does to Katrina in Dead Things). He wants her to find him irresistible, but most of all he wants her to be Buffy, even though that leads to some major inconveniences for him. Also, going down on a robot? Again, it's either really icky or very sweet, I'm really not sure which.
Xander looks a bit rough in this episode. Wonder if Nick was going through a bad patch?
I love the whole vision quest. It's beautifully done. And the First Slayer's "Death is your gift" sent shivers down my spine, coming as it did just after I'd watched Spike in FFL telling Buffy that some day she's going to want it (ie. death).
Of course, I love Spike being all heroic under torture and the final scene is probably the one that first made me think there could be some kind of genuine redemption for Spike. Yep. My Redemptionista allegiance stems from this scene. I really didn't think that Spike would ever be allowed to even go this far.
SMG as the Buffybot is adorable. Perky Buffy on steroids.

Date: 2011-11-06 12:03 am (UTC)Oh, I agree. I wonder, if season 5 had been the end of the series, if Spike would have died in The Gift? Probably, which would have been sad, because of necessity his death wouldn't have been the focus of the ep given that Buffy died too, and he would have died a failure, because it was always going to be Buffy who saved Dawn. I did think, when I was watching FFL and he said to Buffy, "There's death and there's glory and sod all else," that it was a big pointer, this guy's going to die.
Not as big as throwing himself on a cross in Beneath You and begging for rest, though. ;)

Date: 2011-11-06 04:04 am (UTC)Probably, but I would guess that he'd have died INSTEAD of Buffy, rather than in addition to (probably preventing the ritual from starting). I know a lot of people would prefer it, but I can't imagine Joss actually ending the series with Buffy dying. That's just such a depressing message to send.

Date: 2011-11-06 11:49 am (UTC)That said, I would have been sorry to miss large parts of season 6 (not that part) and 7 that involve Spike.

Date: 2011-11-06 11:51 am (UTC)Yes, yes! That's a wonderful moment. And I love the way he sags with relief when Buffy and the Scoobies come charging to the rescue (well, sorta, kinda) too.
Crap. Now you're making me want to watch it.
I'm certainly not going to leave it so long before I watch it again.

Date: 2011-11-06 12:24 pm (UTC)Nah, she was always going to die in S5. I believe one or two of the writers have sad as much. Only thing that changed was Joss was going to have Sunnydale destroyed then instead of S7.
