Some help please

Okay, so LJ seem to have ignored the outcry and gone ahead with the changes to the comments page. God, it looks hideous!

However, from what I've been told, if you have a paid LJ and the right journal style and tick to see other LJs in your own style, you can still see the comment subject lines and drop down boxes on the comments page. But since I've stuck with an ancient S1 LJ style, I don't think that applies to me. Looks like it's time to get another style whether I like it or not. :gloom: :(

Can anyone suggest one that looks something like what I have?

If you go to Journal Style there are an awful lot to choose from now. My style seems unaffected so I didn't really notice anything had happened until I looked at someone else's!

While I don't like the changes at all the icon drop down box does let you see which icon you are using, which isn't a totally horrible idea.

It's all terribly jerky and slow, though. Seems like they didn't road test it properly. The more icons you have, the slower the drop down box is to scroll up and down.

My style seems unaffected at the moment, and your comment page looks okay (for me anyway). I've seen the new style on other LJ's though, and I really, really hate it! Hope mine doesn't change.

I took the plunge and changed to an S2 layout. Now I have the old style comments page back. However, everything else seems to have gone wonky and I can't currently access my home page.

That's what happens when you meddle with things you don't understand, I suppose. :(

I don't even know how to change the layout so I can see my tags on the front page (though I currently only have one on this LJ).

Yes, that's why. Apparently, some S2 styles support the old comments page, but that may change in the future.

Thanks for that link. Wish I wasn't such a techno Amish. Half the time, I've no clue what they're talking about.

Anyway, I seem to have managed to hit on a layout that still supports the old comments page, so that's something I suppose.

Well, I still have my icon descriptions (which is a relief, when I have multiple sunsets and Stargate icons) and I'll see if the subject line (currently titled "This is a comment!") prints. But I've been viewing in my style since the very beginning, so I've never seen other peeps' pretty headers (that they gush over).

Icon chosen because LJ makes us stay on our toes as we weeble and wobble while they mess with our equilibrium. Again. ::sighs::

I'm seeing a large expanse of a purply-blue background here, with a pretty icon to the left. I have a paid LJ but I've never had other people's layouts in "mine" because I usually enjoy what they have done with their own space.

On this comment box I would appear to have the familiar drop-down icon menu. This may be beacuse I am using Firefox with the LJ Hook addon, which also gives me a nifty "randomise" button.

Why must they insist on buggering about with what's not broken?

I quite like this new layout now I have it, but it doesn't show me my tags (I do have one), and I don't know how to make it do that. :( Also, rather confusingly, my Home page is still in the old S1 layout, which I don't mind, but it's still confusing.

Also, purply-blue? It looks grey to me, or do you mean you're looking at my LJ in your style now?

And yes, what is this mania for fixing things that aren't broke? Is there really no one in Russia who wants subject lines for their comments?

The only place it has changed for me is one community I belong to - so it doesn't seem to have effected most journals. I have the drop down menu here on your journal, too.

But honestly, just go and choose a new style - it's only one click...

And hopefully, to be honest, you pick one where the writing in the leave a comment box is big enough to read, it's one reason I don't often comment, because the tiny grey writing on white is so hard to read. (You may regard this as a positive, of course!)

I have to say that on that one community the icon pictures loaded remarkably quickly - but the main problem to it for me is that they are in, not alphabetical order, but the order you uploaded them, which is just a hotch-potch.

ETA - actually s2c has just found the picture thing on a comm he belongs t - and has pointed out that it has a search function - put in the first letter or two and you're there. If that's the case, and I only meet it now and then, I think I'll stop complaining.

It's quite ugly, but I have to say LJ is working more swiftly for me now than the last couple years. Normally I'd have to reload a page 2-3 times before it would show. :-/

Okay, I've changed the layout again, this time to a style called Minalism. Is the font easier to read in the comments?

Quite likely. People are so pissed off I don't think they can just ignore it. Or maybe they can? Maybe this new look is just what the Russian users have been asking for?

Anyway, I changed my style again because someone said the font on the other one was too small. Does this look okay to you?

Oh - I rather like that one - it suits you! And thank you, yes - the font is bigger than in both your original and the in-between one, at least for me. And I seem to still have my drop-down menu and the option of putting a header when I comment.

As long as you like it, of course...

The existence, or not, of the drop down and the subject doesn't seem to be related to whether I view in 'my style' - because I don't, I rather like the different 'looks' on the whole (although, thinking of it, if I did view in my style, whilst boring, it would avoid the problem I have on a number of journals with the tiny font). It is all something of a mystery.

Are you happy with what you've picked? We can talk about how to tweak things tonight if need be, although honestly it is all pretty self explanatory once you are using S2 - just play with whatever options they are offering you until you get what you want.

No idea. And it's not the only change they're contemplating. If you follow a link from the comments on the latest news post, you can see the whole new LJ design, which is just as hideous as the new comments page.

And apparently there are plenty of Russian users who hate the changes too, so it's not just us whingeing Westerners.

Hmm, there must be something weird in the way you're viewing LJ, I think. I agree that the font was small on the first S2 style I chose, but my original one always looked normal size, I thought.
