I just re-watched The Gift for a first time in a long time. :bawls like a baby:
Still found this ep very moving. Some wonderful, wonderful scenes in it, from the 'just a girl' scene at the beginning, to Anya's thinking outside the box, Buffy's sad conversation with Giles, the wonderful Spike/Buffy scene at Revello Drive (can't help thinking this scene encapsulates the way Joss sees the relationship, despite happenings in seasons 6&7), the 'band of buggered' scene. Glory vs the Buffybot, Willow getting Tara back, Giles killing Ben, Buffy's last words to Dawn, Spike's grief, the beautiful, understated music.
Brilliant.

Buffy's words to Dawn are a case in point - this feels so much more heartfelt than any of her didactic stuff in season 7. And I feel for Giles while simultaneously being horrified. As for Spike.. he doesn't even need words in the final scenes to make me teary.
Season 5 - especially 'The Gift' - for the win!

Date: 2012-03-01 10:49 am (UTC)'The Gift' was a simply perfect way to end on imo. I vastly prefer it to Chosen sadly, Spike and all.

Date: 2012-03-01 01:15 pm (UTC)I agree. It's a beautifully written episode. Everyone gets the chance to shine. Didn't mention Xander because none of his scenes particularly stood out to me, but the thing with the wrecking ball is a great moment for him.

Date: 2012-03-01 01:23 pm (UTC)I agree. Also, Chosen has this kind of weary air about it. You can tell that Joss and the cast had had enough and just wanted it to be over.
Which makes me sad, because it was supposed to be Spike's big, heroic moment, but it falls flat somehow.
