I just re-watched The Gift for a first time in a long time. :bawls like a baby:

Still found this ep very moving. Some wonderful, wonderful scenes in it, from the 'just a girl' scene at the beginning, to Anya's thinking outside the box, Buffy's sad conversation with Giles, the wonderful Spike/Buffy scene at Revello Drive (can't help thinking this scene encapsulates the way Joss sees the relationship, despite happenings in seasons 6&7), the 'band of buggered' scene. Glory vs the Buffybot, Willow getting Tara back, Giles killing Ben, Buffy's last words to Dawn, Spike's grief, the beautiful, understated music.

Brilliant.

Is there such a thing as a Gratuitous Icon Comment? Because this is one.

(ITA with your comments, btw.)

Oh yes, 'The Gift' gets me every time (so does 'Not Fade Away' - mainly due to Wesley, though)in a way that 'Chosen' totally failed to do for me - except for the scene where the potentials get Chosen.

Partly it's because none of the characters has done something so awful that you're disappointed in them at this point. But I also think there is more enthusiasm in the writing, and what writing it is!

Buffy's words to Dawn are a case in point - this feels so much more heartfelt than any of her didactic stuff in season 7. And I feel for Giles while simultaneously being horrified. As for Spike.. he doesn't even need words in the final scenes to make me teary.

Season 5 - especially 'The Gift' - for the win!

There's hardly a single scene in that episode that's not 101% note-perfect, is there? It kicks off from that incredible "Previously On", and then it just builds...

In some ways i wish the show had ended there. so it could have gone out with me still loving it unreservedly.

NFA got me and had my love for all the surviving characters just because right before battle, they took a moment to mourn Wesley. And I can't even stand Wesley, didn't like the actor or the character, but no matter what I personally thought of him, at least the other characters took the time to mourn a fallen comrade.

Definitely would have made a wonderful finale if that had to be how it turned out.

If this had been the finale of Buffy I would have been unbearably sad, but it would have been a great way to go. "Chosen" tries too hard to be epic, but "The Gift" is just right.

It was truly one of the more affecting eps. That conversation between Spike and Buffy beautifully epitomizes why I love Spike, and I always write him with that scene at the core of who I imagine him to be.

As the years go by, (and as much as I loved lots of season 6 and 7) I beginning to think that way too.

'The Gift' was a simply perfect way to end on imo. I vastly prefer it to Chosen sadly, Spike and all.

Yep I adore this final. Made of pure win from beginning to end.

I can't help but wish that Chosen had even the half heart of this one, which is perfect.

Thanks for the dragon, btw.

I wish he'd write it like that more often, then...
