My Fannish Year 2013
Jan. 11th, 2014 07:00 pmWhy the cute tiger cub? Why not?
Anyway, I thought I'd better do one of these What I Wrote in 2013 posts before January gets away from me completely.
Behind cut, links to all the fanfic I, and my evil twin, wrote last year. My evil twin's entries are flocked, which is a bit of a tease, but she really didn't write a lot last year. I did, though as usual these days, a lot of it was short and for
sb_fag_ends. I manage to write some long stories towards the end of the year, though. I also finished my only WIP, so there's one less New Year's resolution to make. :)
January
It was Shakespeare month on
sb_fag_ends. I wrote Bruises, a drabble for the prompt Hell is Empty and All the Devils are Here, PG. Very angsty. This drabble got nominated for something, but needless to say, didn't win.
Also for Shakespeare month, I wrote Diversions, for the prompt of a lot of place names in Shakespeare, PG. 1000 words of extreme silliness, in which Spike uses the most convoluted method possible to get what he wants (and no, it's not Buffy. Or not just Buffy).
At the end of the month, I posted my entry for
rekindlespangel, the uber-angsty The Man Who Fell To Earth, Spike/Angel, R. Angel has waited 1000 years for Spike to return, but reunions rarely live up to expectations and this is no exception. This fic is also on Ao3.
February
In Valentine's Day month,
sb_fag_ends went into angst overdrive. Also, because of things to do with the Buffy comics (fandom arguments going on elsewhere, basically), the attempted rape in BtVS season 6 and its fall out was much on my mind.
The Road Not Taken, 100 words, PG. For the prompt Tom Waits' Blue Valentine. Spike if he had never returned to Sunnydale, post season 6.
Cage, 100 words, for the prompt Help!Help! I'm being repressed (yes, a Monty Python sketch inspires me to write angst), Spike and his demon don't see eye-to-eye.
My evil twin wrote something this month too.
Hurt So Good, Spike/Ripper NC17. This was the first in a series of five 1000 word ficlets, sequels to my evil twin's last long fic, Love and War, in which Spike had been sold by an extremely evil (a shrink made him do it!) Angel to an pandimensional brothel.
March
My evil twin wrote another Love and War ficlet, Penance, Spike/Darla, 1000 words, NC17.
And another. In the Cards, Spike/Drusilla, 1000 words, R.
And another. The Price of Love, Spike/Riley, Harmony, Lorne, 1000 words, R-ish.
Meanwhile, over on
sb_fag_ends, I wrote Nowhere Man, for the prompt: alibi. 100 words, PG. Once again angsting about the AR, but, as in the show, Spike doesn't shrink from owning sole culpability.
Back to my evil twin, who wrote a final Love and War ficlet, in which Spike and Angel meet again, for the first time since the betrayal. Customer Care, Spike/Angel, 1000 words, NC17. My evil twin then gave up for the year.
Over on
sb_fag_ends my fellow mods and coding geniuses (genii?)
bogwitch and
quinara had devised a fun game for Easter Week - Reservoir Chickens. I wasn't allowed to win (no fair!) but I wrote this for one of the prompts, Murder to a Jazz Beat.
How Come You Do Me Like You Do?, Spike/Buffy, 1000 words, PG13/R. Or read it on Ao3.
April
Didn't write a lot this month. Just another ficlet for Fag Ends.
Cat Got Your Tongue, 300 words, PG. For the prompt: make your own prompt, in this case, Magician - Willow, Magic Medium - ritual, Victim - Spike, Result - Talking Animal, Random Element - Bottle.
May
I possibly shouldn't include this, but in May, I revised one of my old fics and posted the new version to ask people which they thought was the better version. Brief Encounter (Redux), Spike/Darla, NC17. The original version of this fic was posted in 2006. Set in 1947, at Waterloo Station, Spike and Darla meet for the last time before she returns to the Master, and an old family secret is revealed. It can also be read on Ao3.
Apart from that all I wrote was another drabble for a Fag Ends prompt.
Recruit, 450 words, PG13. This was written for a picture prompt, of James Marsters in Millennium, and the only Spuffy thing about it is that Spike and Buffy are both in it.
June
Another Fag Ends ficlet. Life Lessons, Spike/Buffy, 300 words, PG. Spike learns the meaning of fear.
Also this month I managed to do what I had miserably failed to do in 2012 and write something for
summer_of_giles. The Last Watcher, Giles/Ethan, 1500 words, PG/R. A leopard never changes its spots, especially not an old leopard. Can also be read on Ao3.
July
In July, I wrote a series of ficlets for Fag Ends prompts, starting with this prompt: What if Giles got in contact with Spike on Buffy's behalf after ten years apart? However, I'm not going to link to them, because these ficlets got incorporated later in the year into a much longer fic.
Elsewhere, I was inspired to write a final story in my Being a Vampire Sucks series, a series of short fics about minor vampire characters (begun in 2012), Curiosity Killed the Cat, Holden Webster, 400 words, PG. The whole series can be read here on LJ, or here on Ao3.
August
Honour Among Thieves, Spike, 1000 words, PG. Written for the Fag Ends prompt: Putting the boot in in Djibouti, in which Spike, on his way to get his soul back, undergoes an unexpected sporting challenge in...well, Djibouti. Can be read here on Ao3.
Writing aside, in August I attended Writerconuk, which was, as always, lots of fun. I hope there'll be another one this year, and that I won't be so buried in house renovation/wedding plans that I can't attend.
September
This was the month I broke my back in a car crash (yes, really). It was also poetry month on
sb_fag_ends, and the final week of the month was bad poetry week, for which I wrote Last Man Standing, Spike/Buffy, 200 words, PG, and on the angsty side. With thanks to Mrs Felicia Hemans. Can be read here on Ao3.
October
I managed to write something for the
nekid_spike Halloween challenge (not sure I managed that in 2012 either).
Walking Wounded, Spike/Darla, 1000 words, R. Darla hates her human life, and if Angel won't end it for her, maybe another family member will. Can be read here on Ao3.
Halloween week is always fun on
sb_fag_ends.
bogwitch and
quinara went above and beyond creating last year's Halloween game, in which three witches and their team of trusty Fag Enders vie to save or destroy the world. I went above and beyond in my own way (or just too far, I'm sure some would say) by staying in character as the good witch Vivia throughout.
I also wrote some ficlets.
Acorn (AKA Giant Attack Squirrels of the Hellmouth, Spike/Buffy, 200 words, PG. Time out during the Spike/Buffy daylight fight in The Harsh Light of Day.
A Rat's Tail, Willie the Snitch, 500 words, PG. Willie is a far more influential figure in Spuffy history than we realise. According to him.
Finally, at the end of the month, I posted my entry for
seasonal_spuffy, which incorporated those Fag Ends ficlets from July.
The King and She, Spike/Buffy, Willow/Kennedy, Dawn, Xander, Giles, lots and lots and lots of words, PG/R. Ten years after Chosen/Not Fade Away, Buffy contacts Spike for the first time since she saw him go up in flames. Needs must when there's another apocalypse, on the way, right, even if he does seem to have changed out of all recognition? And Spike's not the only thing that's changed. Read it here on Ao3.
November
Radio Silence, Spike/Buffy, 100 words, PG. Depressed Buffy in season 6, for the five senses month on
sb_fag_ends, prompt: steel drums.
All this time, I'd been working away on the last two stories in my WIP, a retelling of parts of BtVS season 7 with a Spike/Giles pairing. I began this way back in 2008 and was beginning to think I would never finish it - especially since I've spent several years of that time with on-and-off writers' block.
However, in November, I managed to finish the penultimate story in the series, Secrets, Spike/Giles, PG/R. Lots of fighting and running down corridors in this story. It's an action fest. Read it here on Ao3.
December
Full Circle, Spike/Giles, PG13/R, in which Spike and Giles both confront their particular demons and face the future. The final part in my WIP, which had now acquired an overall title, Second Front Read the entire story here on LJ, or here on Ao3.
I am so, so pleased to have finished this story. If I never write any more long fanfics, or any more fanfics at all, at least I won't have left any WIPs.
December
A Time of Giving, an angsty Fag Ends ficlet, Spike, 150 words, PG, for the Christmas carol prompt: In the Bleak Midwinter.
Another Christmas carol prompt, not at all angsty this time: A Merry (Zombie-Free) Christmas, Spike/Buffy, 400 words, PG. For the prompt: See Amid the Winter Snow.
And finally, for
noel_of_spike, I wrote a prequel fic for my The Santa Claus Chronicles series (link to Ao3), Santa Claus: the Origins, Spike/Drusilla, mention of Angelus/Darla, PG. On a snowy Christmas eve in 1882, Spike and Drusilla have a memorable encounter in a miserable public house.
And that's it. I wrote quite a lot, didn't I? Much of it was short. Some of it very much wasn't.
Now I have to try and write something for
rekindlespangel Off we go again.
