Lucifer season 2 episode 5
Oct. 28th, 2016 11:15 amOh dear, I do love this show. Okay, I know it could be a lot better. The procedural element continues to be a complete drag. But the scripts are often witty and the characters - well, I just like them. ;)
Spoilers behind cut.
No Dr Linda in this episode, but I'm pretty sure she'll be needed next week - not just for Lucifer, but for poor Amenadiel as well. I felt very sorry for him this week, having to confess that he's lost all his powers, including his super-strength, not least because Lucifer (as you might expect) wasn't sorry for him at all.
On rewatching the episode, I'm also getting increasingly suspicious of 'Mum.' Listening carefully to her dialogue, it's clearly she that sets Lucifer on a path where he was going to end up killing his own brother (though I suppose she couldn't have known that Uriel would bring the Angel of Death's sword with him?), and now I also wonder if she's behind what's happened to Amenadiel. She didn't gain her super strength until after she saw him for the first time (I don't think, I may have to re-watch to be certain, which really isn't a chore), and she's not told anyone about it. Wouldn't entirely surprise me if she sprouts wings some time soon and starts slowing time down at will.
On the other hand, she seemed surprised by the super strength, so maybe not. Hmm.
Either way, I suspect Maze's suspicions will turn out to be well-founded, which pisses me off a bit. I don't want Ex-Mrs God to turn out to be just evil, and for the series to end with Lucifer offing her the same way he offed Uriel.
Speaking of Uriel, anyone else thinkChristopher Moltisanti Michael Imperioli was an odd choice to be cast as an evil(ish) angel? Well, I thought so at first, but I do think he did a very good job, and had a much meatier role than poor old Charisma Carpenter (though she did get a couple of good lines, and always nice to see a BtVS/AtS alum on TV again), who was stuck in the procedural part of the episode - always the boring bit.
I thought Chloe's speech talking Kimo out of shooting everyone was pretty impressive, though, and agree that Lucifer and Dan bonding over action movies was 'adorable.'
Very powerful scenes at the end of this episode, and times during it when Lucifer reminded me far more than usual of the comics version of the character. Can't wait to see what happens next now he's killed Uriel, which appears to have affected him very badly, and- on a lighter note - when Maze finally moves in with Chloe and Trixie.
Pondering again why I love this show so much. It's a lot to do with the cast, of course - particularly Tom Ellis, who, as stated in various interviews, is playing Lucifer a bit like a character from a Noel Coward play (ie posh and a bit camp) with a dash of Terry Thomas-like sleaze, and who is getting away with a lot because of his charming Brit accent ;) , and with the interplay between the cast members, which is great. But it's also to do with the tone of the show. I guess it's the closest anything has come to a BtVS/AtS (particularly AtS) vibe in many years - ie. a well-blended mixture of drama, comedy and action that segues fairly seamlessly (some of the time anyway) from one tone to the other.

Date: 2016-11-02 08:00 am (UTC)She played the treacherous serial wife of the action film actors.
Having watched episode 6, I think 'Mum' is even more suspect. I suspect I'm wrong about her stealing Amenadiel's powers, though.

Anyway, if it is the case that she's taken Amenadiel's powers (which it probably isn't), she can't have done it on purpose.
She is definitely up to something, though. I'm even more suspicious of her after episode 6.

Date: 2016-11-02 06:49 pm (UTC)There has to be a reason Mum was kicked out of Heaven. Unless we
're being led to believe that God is a bit of prick.... It'll be interesting. I hope they aren't writing themselves into a hole.

Date: 2016-11-06 03:47 am (UTC)I burst out laughing when the first line out of her mouth was something to the effect of "I can't believe that Wes is gone."
I agree with you about the procedural stuff, and also that the ending of the episode was powerful. I also think that Mom is simply manipulating all her kids, which I don't particularly care for. But maybe they just want to keep it mysterious to give the writers room to go in different directions.

And in the Old Testament, for that matter. ;)

Date: 2016-11-17 02:38 pm (UTC)I, too, hope there'll be more to 'Mum' than just that she's basically evil. After watching the latest episode, though, I fear the worst. They seem to be basing her somewhat on Lilith in the comics (in as far as they're referring to the comics at all), who was actually Mazikeen's mother, not Lucifer's and a right nasty piece of work.
Whatever happens, though, I'm pretty uncritical of this show. It's my happy place at the moment. Everyone has to have one, I guess. ;)
