Stranger Things 2
Nov. 15th, 2017 07:02 pmOff to K's again tomorrow, so I'm trying to bang out as many posts as I can before I go.
Finished watching this today. Spoilers behind cut, plus mention of Star Trek: Discovery, which I like a lot better than I did at the beginning.
Okay, I think there's some merit in the view that the first series of Stranger Things was a perfect little self-contained gem and it might have been best to leave well alone. But I only say this because a five season story is being planned for it and later seasons may possibly ruin it, or at least dilute its charm. However, judging by season 2, it hasn't done the former yet, even if it has slightly done the latter.
In other words, I thought it was very good, even if so obviously now part of something bigger and more ambitious. I thought the story was true to the spirit of season 1 while at the same time opening it out by introducing new characters, some of whom, like Max, I liked very much. I liked Kali too, and - so I'm told - unlike most of the people doing reviews on YouTube, liked the episode featuring Eleven's trip to the big city in search of her 'sister.' Other characters really came into their own this season, including Dustin and Steve Harrington, who has turned out to be very heroic in his own way, an 'ordinary hero', if you like, like poor sweet-natured Bob, and Hopper and Joyce (who are totally going to end up together, calling it now). I'm also glad that the story had Hopper deal with the fact that he was conflating Eleven with his own dead daughter and it wasn't doing either of them any good. They ought to have a much better relationship from now on - though I don't see the Government (the evil part of it, that is), leaving Eleven alone for very long, despite the fact that the surviving scientist seems to be a man of his word.
The story also had a proper ending while leaving plenty of threads left hanging to be picked up in season 3, including the animosity of Mike and Eleven towards poor Max, which I didn't like at all and would like to see resolved, and whether 'Papa' is really dead, and will Eleven be able to help her mother, etc, etc. Not to mention the big scary thing hanging over the Upsidedown version of the school. Just because Eleven closed one gate doesn't mean another won't open.
I'll probably watch it again at some point.
As for Star Trek: Discovery, by the time it went on hiatus, I was really enjoying it. I like all the characters, am intrigued by the mystery surrounding Captain Lorca and Lt Tyler and his relationship with L'Rell (apparently, there's a theory that he's actually T'Kuvma's heir, genetically/surgically altered to resemble a human, which would explain a lot), and for me the only real fly still in the ointment is that the new look Klingons are stupid. And having them speak all their dialogue in Klingon is stupider.
