Other TV stuff in brief
Jan. 23rd, 2018 04:02 pmNot that surprisingly (I suppose), I've had plenty of time to watch TV the last few days.
Vague not really spoilers behind cut for The Marvellous Mrs Maisel and She's Gotta Have It. Actual spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery.
In no particular order, I've watched...
...the last four episodes of Spike Lee's TV version of She's Gotta Have It. No idea whether this is a first series or a standalone. I enjoyed it. I would like to see more of the characters, even if there were times when I wanted to bang Nola's head against the wall for being so dense about her art.
I started watching The Marvellous Mrs Maisel on Amazon Prime. This won awards at the Golden Globes and I can quite see why. It's fabulous. I didn't like the main character so much to start with, but the minute she got up on stage for the first time I changed my mind. Now, I love her to pieces. I love Susie too, and the whole late 50s re-creation. In fact, I love the whole show and am trying to stop myself rushing through it too fast. There are only eight episodes and I've already watched four of them.
S and I are still watching McMafia together. He's still managing to stay awake through it.
Have watched a few nature documentaries too - mostly old BBC ones that I found on Netflix.
Also of course watched Star Trek: Discovery.
It continues to be gripping and continues to whack you around the head with plot twists. In this episode, we learned that Captain Lorca is from the mirror universe all along (a fan theory I'd been told about, so it wasn't a complete surprise). I...guess you could say the clues were there. He did a lot of dodgy things in the Federation universe. On the other hand, he was always okay around Saru - not racist, I mean - so was either not so prejudiced against aliens as other humans in the Mirrorverse, or was bloody good at pretending he wasn't. I would be interested to know how long he's meant to have been in the Federation universe, given that he had history with various characters there. Is there a Federation version of Lorca still around that he's replaced, for instance? Also, I must admit I'd be a little disappointed if his only reason for going to the Federation universe in the first place is really because he had a creepy age-inappropriate relationship with Burnham and thinks any version of her will do.
Am also a bit puzzled about Tyler. Is he un-Klingonified for good now? L'Rell doing that Klingon death howl thing would suggest so. If so, that was kind of a waste. Best case scenario, he's un-Klingonified enough for Lt Stamets to (kind of) forgive him for killing Dr Culber (I wouldn't actually find that very believable) but still Klingon enough to be helpful in the war with the Klingons. None of that whole plot made sense, but it made for good drama in the previous episode. I'm sorry it's over so soon.
I also really hope this isn't the last we've seen of Dr Culber. That would be too sad for words. And I don't at all understand why Burnham just told the Emperor everything. Couldn't she at least have lied about the spore drive?
We'll see.
What I've signally failed to watch is The X-Files. I watched the first episode of the new series, was so gobsmacked by how bloody awful it was, I've so far failed to find the courage to watch any more. :(
