Nov. 13th, 2009 11:07 pmGone again. See you all Sunday.
Before I go, though, am I the only one who watched the first episode of Misfits last night?
Spoilers within
For anyone wondering what I'm talking about, Misfits is about a group of young offenders doing community service who are struck by lightning during a freak storm and develop super powers. I suppose it was aimed at the Skins audience (ie. not me), but I really enjoyed it. It was well written, well acted and though the characters aren't exactly endearing (they all have ASBOs -anti-social behaviour orders, that is), I think they'll probably grow on me.

Date: 2009-11-14 12:54 am (UTC)All that said, it was well-written on the whole and certainly gripping. And has that British style to it which means it will almost inevitably be sold to the US as a concept and wrecked. (Bitter about
We'll definitely be watching more.

I wonder when the bodies will be found.

Date: 2009-11-16 09:10 am (UTC)Drunkeness? Now then, now then. What's all this?
Anyway, I'm glad you found it intriguing. Also, I agree with your assessment of how we were supposed to see the relationship of Nathan and his mother in ep 1. I'm sure we'll be shown he has his issues, but as of ep 1, the kid's a bully.

Date: 2009-11-16 09:16 am (UTC)This is an absolutely rubbish super power to have, I agree, and if the show doesn't deal with that aspect of it, I shall be very disappointed, but for the moment, I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt.
I actually think they avoided stereotypes for the most part. The big black man was a probation officer, not a drug dealer or criminal of some kind, and I don't agree that Nathan was portrayed as a brat with a heart of gold. Have seen zero evidence of that heart of gold so far. Until we're shown otherwise, I saw him as a bully, pure and simple. I also thought the chav stereotype was subverted quite substantially, in that that character turned out to be braver and more quick witted than any of the others.
We'll see. And yes, it will undoubtedly be wrecked by Americans at some point.

I'm sure he'll turn out to have some good qualities in the end, but at the moment, I can't for the life of me see what they are. Which is not to say that I didn't feel sorry for him being thrown out of the house like that. It's just that he was so obnoxious, you could see why his mother had been driven to it, plus it obviously upset her to do.
And notice how none of his friends wanted him crashing at theirs.
I hope they won't go the route that all his unpleasantness is linked back to some kind of childhood abuse. That would be so cliched. It wouldn't surprise me, though.

Agreed. That would be awfully cliched (and easily insensitive).

Date: 2009-11-16 10:44 am (UTC)Yep. I felt the first ep had enough subversion of cliches that I'm hopeful they won't go for it.
It was also extremely funny at times. The telepathic girl overheaing her dog's thoughts was hysterical.
