Telly stuff
Mar. 25th, 2011 06:17 pmRather contrasting telly watching today.
Slight spoilers behind cut, should anyone need them except me, for season 1 of The Good Wife and the pilot episode of Supernatural. Not in the slightest bit profound.
I'm well into season 1 of The Good Wife now, and gone way past finding the Sainted Alicia annoying to liking her quite a lot. I also like Diane and Kalinda. The female characters in this show are just great, in fact. I'm even quite fond of Mrs Florick Snr. I like that the women in the show are all mature, some of them even more mature than me. :) Plus, beyond the case of the day, all the machinations behiind the scenes are completely fascinating. As I said before, US politicians and lawyers, as depicted in this show, are more macho than the toughest so-called maverick cop/lawyer in a Brit show, even when they're women. In fact, the only thing I don't like is that all the liberal judges in the show are either criminals or useless.
As for SPN, I haven't a lot to say so far, beyond, so people think these two boys are good looking? Very odd. Also, don't they ever put the lights on?
I know that female characters get a very poor lookin in this show. They're either evil, or dead, so I've read. So I suppose it starts as it means to go on.

Date: 2011-03-25 06:25 pm (UTC)To be fair most characters end up dead.

Date: 2011-03-25 06:39 pm (UTC)They aren't my type. Too young and Hollywood plastick-y looking. Plus, one of them has a weird nose.
I didn't think the episode was bad exactly, but the whole thing was dripping in testosterone, which I suppose I noticed even more than I would otherwise have done because of watching The Good Wife.

Date: 2011-03-25 07:06 pm (UTC)As for Good Wife, I like it but I'd like it a lot more if they killed off the husband and the love interest and just made it the Aliacia and Kalinda Show.

Date: 2011-03-25 09:34 pm (UTC)Oh dear! Not keen on either of those things. The religious stuff spoilt season 2 of Being Human for me.
I find the husband in The Good Wife interesting in a creepy sort of way. It's the politics stuff.

Date: 2011-03-25 07:23 pm (UTC)It's odd, isn't it? But I think that, in this situation, one of two things (or maybe both things) happen(s): they get more confident, and behave 'better looking', and we believe them, and/or we get used to them (like family) and see them through biased eyes.
There's a lot of talk about Dean's being misogynistic. Personally, I think the mismatch between his rather sweet looks and his laddish behaviour gives the character a bit more depth that you usually find in US TV heroes.
I also like Diane
So do I!
Have you encountered Gary Cole and Alan Cummings yet?
And what about Will?

Date: 2011-03-25 09:38 pm (UTC)I'll have to see if that happens to me. I can't imagine it at the moment.
Re: Will, I like him, but as far as I've got there are all these hints of bad stuff and backstabbing that we'll find out about. I haven't encountered either Gary Cole (another man with a weird nose) or Alan Cummings yet, no. Do they appear in season 2.

Date: 2011-03-25 07:34 pm (UTC)The Good Wife has Kalinda, Alicia and Diane -- and stories I can watch and enjoy. This is my weekly 'have-to-see' show.

Date: 2011-03-25 08:06 pm (UTC)But mostly I worry that Dean is leading people astray from the One True Path of Spike-worship!
no subject
Date: 2011-03-25 09:31 pm (UTC)Well, that won't happen to me, so don't worry about that. I still worship Spike - to the extent that I've embarked on yet another epic-length fanfic about him based on one of your prompts.
I can't see me ever doing that with Sam and Dean.

Date: 2011-03-25 08:50 pm (UTC)1. Powerful women are evil.
2. Good women are weak.
3. Good women who show signs of being powerful, or powerful women who show signs of being good, either (a) are secretly evil or (b) must die as soon and as unpleasantly as possible. Or both.
That said, I came around to watching the show about two years ago and in some ways do enjoy it. But the way women are treated on it continues to piss me off.

Date: 2011-03-25 09:42 pm (UTC)I've probably read too many of these arguments before ever watching an episode to be able to watch the show without my hackles being half-raised. And I can see some of those tropes re women in embryo in the very first episode. :(

Date: 2011-03-26 12:01 am (UTC)On SPN: It took me a very long while(2 seasons) to really get into it and I still have issues (the women or the weird alien bimbo sex they want to sell as such), but it is a really good show in the end. It has incredibly funny moments and I like how the mythology builds up.

Date: 2011-03-26 04:38 pm (UTC)I fell in love with her in the ep where she gave up her chance of becoming a judge.
I'll persevere with SPN, but I can't help thinking I've possibly read too much about its problematic way of dealing with female characters to ever become a fan.

Date: 2011-03-26 04:55 pm (UTC)Yep, I loved that one too! I always love it when eps end on Diane laughing.

I wouldn't really consider myself a fan, but more a casual watcher. I like it and it has its moments of brilliance but it also has such glaring faults that I could never look at it with fandom obsessiveness. It's a nice state to be in though, instead of feeling affected by every story choice they make, I'm just looking for shallow entertainment.

Date: 2011-03-26 05:40 pm (UTC)Hopefully, I'll find the same if I persevere. The Good Wife started like that, but it's sucking me in deeper.

I just watched the one where she laughs like a drain because that horrible Glenn Beck clone says she's a closet lesbian.

Then again, I'm told the best-looking of the bunch is their dad, and I can't see it. So.
As for the lights, no, I can't tell that they ever do put them on.

Date: 2011-03-28 03:30 pm (UTC)I watched ep 2 in daylight, which helped a bit, if only because of the contrast, but it was still pretty hard to tell what was going on at times.
