Dexter season 1
May. 24th, 2011 06:50 pmDecided that my Spike/Giles fic wasn't finished after all, so I've expanded one of the scenes. Getting close to where I can't see the wood for the trees now. Hmm.
In other news (there isn't much, you can tell), I'm still watching season 1 of Dexter. Spoilers for that within, and please no spoilers for later eps.
It's one of those series where not being spoilered really, really matters. I feel quite grumpy that I know as much about what's coming up as I do. I wish I didn't know about Rita, for instance. On the other hand, when I get to that point, I may be glad that I do. Or, I may decide I just can't watch any more. I don't know.
As for season 1, I just watched the ep where the identity of the Ice Truck Killer is revealed. I didn't know it beforehand, but had my suspicions in the previous episode and then clocked him very early in this one, the minute Dexter's sister started taking a real interest in him, in fact. Kind of predictable really, but cleverly done for all that.
I dunno. I do like the series very much, but liking the character of Dexter is problematic. I suppose you get around that by telling yourself that he's hardly a typical serial killer, but still...:shiver:
I have nothing much else to say, except that the weather is weird. We appear to be having March and April's weather in May, having had May's weather in March and April. How are all of you?

Date: 2011-05-29 07:15 am (UTC)Anyway, I liked the first season, though MiAmor was almost ready to give up during the ex-husband stuff. We persevered and all was eventually made right. And, best of all, there were only 11 episodes, not 22 as I had thought!
I like the problem of liking Dexter. It's very creepy, in much the same way that Adelle and Dollhouse were creepy, but without all those dratted moral grays. You know what he is, you know it's wrong, and also that it could be much, much worse. I see it as being a very American show, in that violence solves everything (supposedly). It gets to the point that when a problem is solved without having its blood drained, it's almost more of a shock.
We humans are very strange, that we can come up with this stuff...and enjoy it.

Date: 2011-05-30 12:50 pm (UTC)It's bizarre. I'm sure the scene at the end of the last episode of Dexter imagining himself being feted as a hero was meant to be ironic, but I'm also sure lots of people genuinely would applaud him, seeing as it's been set up so carefully that he only kills other serial killers. You can wank it to yourself that liking Dexter is okay, whereas if he had a thing about cutting up young women, like his brother, it would not be okay at all.

Good point, though I think there's more irony here than in, say, 24, but of course that would go right over many people's heads, as would the ambiguous stuff in Dollhouse.

Quite understandable. I felt a bit the same way. Didn't like to find myself actually hoping Dexter would kill him.
It is a very good show, though. The cast are brilliant. I love Lieutenant LaGuerta.
