Trying to use a non-spoilery icon outside the cut, though it's not the icon I want to use.
More slightly shame-faced Game of Thrones 'shippy rambling behind cut, with spoilers obviously.
Okay, so you know the other day when I thought most people reading about my sudden Dany/Jorah love (she shouldn't have kissed him, damnit, and most of all, he shouldn't have gone on his knees to her) would be thinking ewww! he's old enough to be her father? Well, I'm sure there are people thinking that, but mostly -judging by all the icons I'm seeing, and all the comments about the pairing on
game_thrones, I'm very far from alone. Far from being part of 'we happy few', I seem to be part of a major 'shipping group (in the show-based part of the fandom anyway). Weird.
I also don't seem to be the only one getting bromance-y/'shippy vibes off Bronn and Tyrion either. This is such fun! :Is a happy 'shipper.'
And that's despite having accidentally spoilered myself when, on ordering the first book in the series on Amazon (yes, like
mrs_underhill,
caliente_uk and
coercion88, I am going to read the first book, and then try not to read the second until I've seen season 2), my eye skimmed over the blurb for the latest book - the one that comes out in about 2 weeks. Aargh! And then, if that wasn't bad enough, I followed a link (forget which one) and found all these character profiles (books characters, that is), and before I could tell myself not to look I'd read the Jorah Mormont one (can't help it if I read faster than I think, can I?). Oh well, I can't say I didn't know it would all end in tears, because I did.
But never mind. Until we get to that point I'm just going to enjoy it as much as I can.
I'm falling more and more in love with this show every day. Can you tell? I'm obsessively watching the two GoT fanvids I've saved to my memories over and over again and looking through every icon post seaching for the perfect icon for this character and that character, then seeing one I like even more and changing my mind. I'm even seriously thinking of deleting some of my BtVS icons to make room.
It must be serious.

I don't think she's indifferent exactly, but it obviously isn't requited. I didn't realise I had a type. But apparently I do.
Plus, I've always fancied Iain Glen.

Date: 2011-06-24 09:27 pm (UTC)The good news is - he was apparently writing To Run With Wolves - the next book in the series with it, and he had to rewrite Dance in order to make Wolves work. He has a blog on livejournal - if you want to find out this stuff for yourself.

Date: 2011-06-24 09:30 pm (UTC)Well, I don't normally go for May/December-type relationships (or maybe I should say May/October in this case), but they don't bother me either, no matter which way round they are. I think it probably depends a lot on how the dynamic is initially set up, and I never got a fatherly-vibe from Jorah towards Dany in the show, so if that was what Iain Glen was going for, he failed miserably. :)

Ranting is very cathartic. And I do love that icon.

Date: 2011-06-24 09:31 pm (UTC)Ah, that rather suggests you don't think much of the books. To be honest, they don't really sound like my sort of thing. But I love the show to pieces so I can't help thinking there has to be something in them.

Date: 2011-06-24 09:38 pm (UTC)It will also be interesting to see if the final two books in the series are at all influenced by the show. I'm thinking of the Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell. The ones published before the TV series (starring Sean Bean) described the title character as dark haired (and in fact Paul McGann was initially cast in the role but injured himself on location in Ukraine and the role had to be re-cast). In Sharpe books written post-the TV series, Cornwell never described Sharpe's appearance because he said he'd begun to imagine him looking like Sean Bean.

The only fights I've seen in the fandom to date are over Catelynn Stark, Jamie Lannister, and Sansa. For some reason those three characters are a bit on the controversial side.

Date: 2011-06-24 09:53 pm (UTC)Well, if I stick to my plan, I won't be reading that till 2013 (unless the show gets cancelled after season 2, which I hope it won't).
(It's a bit like the Wire - the best book is the third one in my opinion
I find it quite hard to pick a favourite season of The Wire. Season 5 is generally thought to be the weakest, and it probably is, but it's still brilliant IMO. Season 4 is probably the best season of television ever written. Seasons 1-3 are far more closely connected (though season 2 may not seem like it at first) than the two later seasons, though they are still all woven together like that big tapestry I talked about.
Didn't mean to start rambling on about The Wire. Sorry.

He didn't kiss her. She kissed him on the cheek just before she walked into the fire. It was very bittersweet, because of course he loves her, but she doesn't feel the same way at all.

I can see why Jaime might be controversial, but I don't really get the other two.

Date: 2011-06-24 09:55 pm (UTC)I'm not really shippy with GoT, though you could say I shipped Tyrion/Shae at some point. I guess it's more popular to ship doomed ships when there are no not doomed ones. :)

Date: 2011-06-24 10:31 pm (UTC):) I've even called this icon 'this 'ship is so doomed'. I may not be 'shippy for the books either. I wouldn't be surprised if any 'shipping that occurs springs from the show-only people.

Date: 2011-06-25 02:33 am (UTC)I was surprised that the show made it so clear so early. They've also made quite clear when he stopped because you see him receive a pardon before the assassination attempt in the show.
And I have to say, I don't think we've seen the last of Jorah in the books. It still feels quite unfinished to me. Nothing particularly permanent happened to him, and characters have a way of popping up again in unexpected ways.

Date: 2011-06-25 02:47 am (UTC)And I contend Sansa is a well written character because she is such a teenaged girl. You alternate between wanting to hug her and comfort her and wanting to shake her for her teenaged wrongheadedness... which is pretty spot on for young teenaged girls.
