Who's the father, then?
Feb. 13th, 2012 04:51 pmA poll re: the Buffy comics. If you haven't read them, everything behind the cut is spoilery. This post will probably be flocked later, but is open for now.
Okay, so I think most people - even if they're not reading the Buffy comics- have gathered that Buffy is pregnant. As of the end of the previous issue, she had decided on an abortion, but since she hasn't had it yet and may not have it, people are still speculating about who the father is, even though we were at one stage explicitly told that Buffy doesn't know. There seems to be some hedging going on about that now, though, if this interview with Scott Allie is anything to go by, so I thought I'd stick up a poll.

You know, Deb, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have a clue as to what foolishness is going on in the comic-world. Which your synopsis proves. ::shudders:: Just. Yuck.

Date: 2012-02-13 05:21 pm (UTC)But I did want to ask about the way she got pregnant — at the party in the first issue of Buffy Season 9, after Buffy became black-out drunk. Her behavior at that party has already bothered some fans, and to learn she got pregnant there, and doesn’t know by whom, will bother some fans even more, especially those who want Buffy to be, well, more responsible.
I think that first of all that they should wait until they have all the facts and they’ll learn stuff that they didn’t know before. They should find out what happened before they completely judge her. But at the same time, this is also about the time in your life when you do things that are irresponsible, or that you want to hold yourself to account for. She’s a person living her life, she’s not running for president — actually, I think those guys have a lot of sex. [Chuckles] She’s not living under a microscope. Well, she is, because we’re all watching her, but she doesn’t know that. And she’s going make some wrong decisions. I’m not going to turn it into a Season 6 wrong-decision-athon, but at the same time irresponsible and impulsive behavior may occur in your 20s. Consult a doctor.

On the one hand, I agree that impulse control can be iffy into one's 20s. On the other hand, I'd say very early 20s for this kind of thing, and I'm guessing that Buffy's 25 or so by now, so I don't think Joss is telling the accurate age-appropriate story here. Though, individuals vary, of course, so I'm not going to kvell too much.
The pertinent part of the quote for your question is that readers should "wait until they have all the facts and they’ll learn stuff that they didn’t know before". Um, okay. I'm not wild about this approach to storytelling. If the story isn't any good without the element of surprise, maybe it just isn't any good, you know? Ho hum.

Date: 2012-02-13 05:30 pm (UTC)Yeah, that part of the interview annoyed the hell out of me. First off, I haven't seen too many judging her, they're judging Joss and his penchant for dubcon. The other is people are always going to go by their first impressions. Hiding the story isn't the same as creating mystery. If he doesn't want people jumping to conclusions, he should give the explanations as they happen.

I can't work out whether Joss is really this deluded about his own role in the story process or whether he just thinks we're all brainless dipshits.
ETA: Especially when he says straight out that he's not going to let it become S6 - even when he's saying that lack of impulse control is essentially a hormone issue that he has no control over the depiction of. !!!!! Gah, this is why I don't read interviews or listen to commentaries.

Date: 2012-02-13 05:36 pm (UTC)Well, same old same old really. That's what we were told all through season 8. The next issue will explain everything. Except that it never did, and the explanations were lame anyway.
