The True Blood finale
Aug. 27th, 2012 03:10 pmOkay, I don't know about anyone else but I loved every single minute of it -
Spoilers behind cut.
-with the possible exception of the rather anticlimactic death of bad King Russell -even the slightly boring stuff with the werewolves (because I knew it would be over in a minute). The comic relief fairy birth scene, with the Arlene/drunk lady/Lafayette commentary off was one of the funniest things I've seen in ages. Also, I love that apart from that, all the other plots managed to meet up in the middle and make one glorious bloody mess, including the Sam/Luna stuff, which did have a point - was even quite important to the overall outcome.
Also, I did not see that end coming. I thought Bill was either going to turn out to have been playing Salome in order to bring down the Authority (doing bad stuff for the the greater good a la Twangel), or that Sookie would be able to talk him down. I certainly didn't expect to see him follow his new found religious beliefs to their ultimate conclusion and then explode in a puddle of goo only to rise again. Eeek! And so typical True Blood that the last line of a season should be Eric yelling at Sookie to run. A whole year before we find out what happened next.
Things I loved: Jason being Jason (and though you can't blame Ghost!Mr and Mrs Stackhouse for being anti-vampire, I suspect they're not what they seem and will turn out to be evil), Tara/Pam (now my True Blood OTP, and as I've been saying all season, being made a vampire is the best thing that ever happened to Tara (though I would like to see her reconcile with Lafayette)), Eric, Norah (who I don't much like, but who is okay as part of the ensemble), Pam and Tara as a vampire family. I hope they adopt poor Jessica. Loved the Eric/Pam flashbacks, loved that Eric actually went back into the Authority to save Bill. Loved Vampire Reverend Newlin (I hope he'll be back).
This episode was pretty much a vampire blood bath, wasn't it? I do wish that both Chelsea (the receptionist) and the vampire IT geek who was put to death in a previous episode had survived the season, the first because she would have made a great sidekick for Rev Newlin in the next season and the second because she was a fun character, but oh well.
Great stuff - probably my favourite season of True Blood since season 2 (which I suspect puts me in a minority, because I've seen an awful lot of people say they don't like it). I hope the new showrunner will be able to take this ball and run with it.
Which now I think of it is sort of a pun.

Date: 2012-08-27 04:36 pm (UTC)I agree with you - this season has been a lot of fun, what with more Pam (in an amazing range of corsetry - how does she even breathe?), luscious vampire Tara (so much more interesting than sullen, I hate everything Tara) and the Eric'n'Bill shenanigans. King Russell did his standard shock death routine, but otherwise seemed a bit extraneous to the plot at times (loved vampire Rev. Newlin, though).
Like you, I found all the rest - werewolves, shapeshifters, Terry and his fire/smoke demon thingy - tedious and forgettable. I did like the resolution of the Hoyt/Jason/Jessica triangle, though it was so sad, with poor Hoyt choosing to forget them both rather than carry the pain. At least he got away from his awful mother!
I have a soft spot for Sherriff Andy and his paramour and Arlene because she's so sweet. But Lafayette had a fairly rubbish season, and that's a shame as he's a great character.
All in all, a great season and I look forward to seeing the finale this week. Thanks for reviewing this one - nice to know someone else is still enjoying it.

Date: 2012-08-27 04:53 pm (UTC)I agree that Lafayette hasn't had a lot to do since the Jesus plot was resolved, but on the other hand he's had some outrageously good lines. I only hope they can find more to do with him next season - maybe a reconciliation with Tara :crosses fingers.;
I agree about Pam's corsetry. Her waist must be tiny!
Didn't really mind Terry and the smoke demon too much, because I love Terry, but yes, the werewolf stuff continues to be very un-involving.
Eric and Bill are just gold. I'm rather sorry that's over.
Or is it?

Date: 2012-08-27 05:10 pm (UTC)True Blood isn't high art. It's Summer Fluff, and it worked quite well at that this summer.
