A quick post to say I really, really enjoyed this weekend's Doctor Who, which was a relief.

More behind cut, with spoilers.

Relief because last week's was so terrible I was about ready to give up. As you know, I loved the daft dinosaurs in space thing, which so many people seemed to not like, but the cowboy episode was just...awful. So awful I felt quite embarrassed for the show. And not just awful but, IMO, boring as well.

This week's, though, had all the best things about Moffatt's version of DW in it - the wacky premise that you would probably never have thought of yourself, the domestic details, the Doctor being bonkers (the sequence where he's bored and starts painting the Ponds' fence was hysterically funny), Rory's dad (love him to pieces). It was just really, really fun.

Next week's ep looks like it might be a bit of a downer, though.

Yeah I was disappointed in the Gunslinger episode too... partly because I've been having an epic Deadwood marathon recently, and the Western set used in Doctor Who looked like something from an amateur theater production in comparison! And the whole thing was full of plot-holes (the Gunslinger doesn't kill innocent folks, and yet they were all trapped in the town, eh?!), and had a completely unsatisfying conclusion. Plus the voiceover was cheesy, and the alien make-up was way below par.

This week's episode was much better - funny, weird and with an out-there premise. And you're right, Rory's dad is awesome!

I agree with your assessment of both episodes. I had recorded the cowboy one as I was out when it aired and barely watched it while it was playing as painting my nails was more interesting.

I liked the cubes episode even though the ending was very silly. Nice to see the Brigadier's daughter making an appearance.

I really liked "The Power of Three" as well. It's the first episode since "The Doctor's Wife" that I've wanted to re-watch.
(I love Rory's dad to pieces, too.)

I realized that I have finally become emotionally invested in the fate of the Ponds...right before they leave. Sigh.

Reading this has prompted me to actually watch some of the episodes I've recorded. I've been enjoying Dr Who less and less, which is sad because, after many misgivings about DT leaving, I actually like Matt Smith in the role. It just all got a bit sentimental and non-exciting.

So I'll have a look at the dinosaur one and take it from there. Might miss the cowboy one, unless there are hugely important plot points I must see.

Word of dissent - while I did like the dinosaurs on spaceships episode, like you, I also liked the gunslinger one - it kept reminding me of this old Battlestar Galactica episode. Remember "Red Eye"? eee... ahem... probably not a selling point for either episode, actually, but more a sign of how much I like western kitsch.

I absolutely disliked "The Power of Three". The plot... fegh. It didn't go anywhere. We didn't do anything or learn anything. It felt like filler. And it promised to show the doctor living with normal life with Amy and Rory - I mean, that was in the voice-over at the beginning and end and well, I hate being promised something and not getting it.
