A few more season 5 snippets
Oct. 5th, 2012 12:16 pmWatched as far as Checkpoint last night. A few thoughts behind cut which contains spoilers for my recent Spike/Giles story, should anyone be wanting to avoid those.
Firstly, the run of eps mid-season are really appalling for Spike, aren't they? I don't know about anyone else, but almost every scene of his in Triangle made me cringe. To be fair, they probably made him cringe too, which is why he lost his temper with the dummy like that. He should be ripping the Slayer's head off, not apologising to her. And certainly not feeling bad about having ruined her relationship with Riley.
But he is still incredibly creepy, and so clueless that -as I wrote in a comment on
slaymesoftly's LJ -calling him clueless is actually unfair to the word clueless. Even when he's trying to be helpful to Buffy during the interrogation scene in Checkpoint (stop simpering, Lydia!), he just succeeds in making everything worse. Poor Spike. I sorta kinda feel sorry for him, but I also understand every reaction of the others' to him.
Speaking of Lydia, though, having rewatched Checkpoint, I've decided I wasn't being unfair at all to Quentin Travers and his entourage in my Spike/Giles re-telling season 7 story. Travers really is that much of a git, and not nearly as clever as he thinks he is. Besides, anyone who can put a young girl through what Travers put Buffy through in Helpless has it coming, IMO, and even more so after his speech in Checkpoint about how Slayers come and go but the Council endures. The Shadowmen would be proud of him.
It's just great when Buffy turns the tables on him and reminds him that the reason why the Council endures is because of the Slayer, not the other way around.
Other things I noticed:
Okay, so contrary to my story, Nigel may, or may not, be a medical man, but he obviously does know something about magic. Buggerit! That'll teach me not to rewatch before writing. Mind you, I also realised while re-watching Triangle that it's not Guernenthar's Ascension that's the demon equivalent of Christmas/Hannukkah/Kwanzaa, it's Guernenthar Ascendant. Also buggerit. Dunno how many times I've made that mistake in fic. Did anyone notice?

...Damnit, I based an entire fic around it being Gurnenthar's ascension.

Date: 2012-10-05 12:23 pm (UTC)I mean, it's sort of the same thing. Isn't it? If he/she/it is ascendant, they're going to have an ascension, aren't they? Or potentially?

Date: 2012-10-05 12:45 pm (UTC)And no, I didn't notice any gaffes in your fic with either Guernenthar Whotsit, nor Nigel's speciality. I was just happy to see Nigel show up in a story, period! And he makes a perfect closet case. Grrr.
Yeah, Spike is really flailing at this point, and his own worst enemy. You can see that he's trying, which makes him sympathetic, but his efforts are soooooo wrong. Maybe if we whacked him on the nose with a newspaper?

It might help. I'm actually finding it quite difficult to watch because of him, even though I know it's a stage he has to go through. I completely flunked out of watching Crush this evening. I find that one really tough going.
