So, any of my fellow Brits watching Ripper Street?

S and I caught up with the first episode on iPlayer the other night. Really enjoyed it, and it has definite fannish potential, I feel (not to mention rating high on the slashometer).

Am pretty sure it'll be shown in the US at some point. The inclusion of an American character (former Pinkerton agent) makes it pretty clear it's been made with the US market in mind.

I have the first ep sitting on my hard drive. I might have forgotten it there but now I'm definitely going to watch. Glad you enjoyed. :)

I'm super excited about this show, being a lover of Victorian London, Jack the Ripper, and Jerome Flynn.

I think it is being shown on BBC America from the 19th.

It'a already been advertised over here on BBC America, so I'm sure we're part of the plan. It looked like it was going to be very good.

They have been ads for it on BBC America. Don't know when it's plannednto start though.

And reading my own post in your reply... Boy, Kindle's autocorrect function that 'anticipates' words for you is more trouble than it's worth. I can't name how many posts it has mangled!

I thought it took a while to warm up, but the last 15 mins or so of the second episode was one of the most nail biting things I've seen in a while!

Slash potential, though? My mind boggles!

Joseph Gilgun was bloody terrifying!

And with a gang of children, because -- under those circumstances -- children have no boundaries.

...all the material you need

Sad, when both Reid and Jackson have such complex relationships with women, which would repay fannish exploration...

The setting's wonderful. I especially like the costumes, which seem much more 'real' than usual. I couldn't decide whether I liked the language or not, but I think it had paid off by the end of the second episode.

No reason why people can't do both.

No. But in my experience, in most of the fandoms I participate in, they don't.

I have it taped to watch, so I'll catch up with you when I have. Anything with Matthew Macfadyen pleases me :)

Thanks for that. I have it recorded, but have not yet got around to watching. Good to know it's worth it.

We watched the first episode, last night. Yes, it was good.

We certainly enjoyed it. Interesting use of the technological revolution and intriguing hints of dangerous back stories for two of the main characters.

I enjoyed the first episode of Ripper Street, and thought last night's was even better, getting a bit more back story and intrigue from the regular characters and a good exciting plot line too. I've a soft spot for Jerome Flynn since his Soldier Soldier days, so was hoping to like this series.

I skipped over the first episode of this, because it sounded like it was just going to be fetishising cut-up women and I couldn't be bothered - but then there were murmurings on Facebook and I became intrigued... Actually love it! It's blatantly a sell to the US - not only with the American character, but with the establishing scenes in the first episode, which were a complete rip-off of the Robert Downey jr. Sherlock Holmes (I didn't care one bit). I love not!Darla's outfits, and how they've got the obsession with Egyptian mysticism exactly right for the period (with both the snuff and punchy-man's tattoo. And the dialogue!!! The rhythm of it is so lovely and natural. I'm with you in doubting its authenticity, but I hate things that try to be piously authentic - I'm much happier with this off-the-cuff nod to overwritten Victorian prose. :D

There does, however, need to be more Rose. And Sarah Bernhardt.

Aha! You have to see the first one - a) because it's much better and doesn't drag like the second one and b) because (hopefully!) you'll see what I mean. The film kicks off with a fight in a backroom - Sherlock throwing punches and Watson (IIRC) rolling his eyes at the side. And there's a load of violin music.

Yeah, I don't hold out much hope for the female characters either, but I did like the Jewish orphanage woman. And deffo prefer it to Sherlock - if only because it praises the teamwork and varying skills of all three of the main blokes, rather than giving us boy genius and his presumably!straight man.

Just sticking my head in to say hello - [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha flagged you up as being of interest and more Brits on the f-list are always welcome.

And Ripper Street is definitely interesting and has potential to be more. Must pull ep 2 from iPlayer!

No problem - you certainly won't be the only one on my flist who doesn't like Firefly! Also, my brother is an ecologist and currently off in Cambodia searching out places for tourists to go and see birds... I may be well used to talk about birds ;-)

They have a rather irreverent approach!

I'm not terribly into going out birdwatching, but I do know a reasonable amount, and we have feeders in the back garden and so forth. Nice steady crowd of goldfinches.
