I took it into my head yesterday to start a re-watch of GoT season 1. Have only got to episode three so far, but it's left me wondering...

....do we ever find out what happened to Benjen Stark?

I don't want the details (am trying my best to avoid major spoilers, but he's been gone an awful long time now (since season 1 ep 3, to be precise).

A simple yes or no, and a timeframe, would be nice.

As far as I can remember no, we don't see him again. He may be mentioned, though...

No we haven't heard about him since his horse came back without a rider.

I wanted to add that basically whenever someone tells Jon Snow "we'll talk when I come back" it's their cue to disappear without a trace ;)

This is true of some other characters in that series as well, apparently.

Characters have a tendency to disappear in Martin's books. I honestly think the writer forgot about Benjen (although how, I don't know, considering his fandom has a tendency to remind him.).

I don't think Martin forgot about Benjen; he went beyond the Wall, his horse came back without a rider, two of his companions were found turned into blue-eyed ice zombies (one of them attacked Lord Mormont and was killed by Jon). So I think the conclusions are pretty obvious; Benjen died and/or was resurrected as a blue-eyed ice zombie. Whether we'll ever see him again is unknown but his fate isn't an example of Martin being absent-minded IMO. As for other characters, are you perhaps mixing the show (which has lost actors and by extension characters) with the books? No one has randomly disappeared without some explanation in the books in my recollection (right down to the innkeeper who was present when Catelyn arrested Tyrion - in the books Tywin Lannister had her hanged!)

I've heard an interesting theory that makes it a clear maybe.

Whether or not that theory holds the point still stands that Martin didn't just forget about Benjen Stark.

There is certainly a possibility that we do find out (I have my theories) but up through the end of book 5, nothing is confirmed.

There is someone who might possibly be Benjen using a pseudonym, but it's not been confirmed either way. Could just be wishful thinking on the fans' part!

I am up to book six - the answer is maybe. There is a character who appears who may be Benjen but is not identified as such.

He does show up earlier than the 6th book - I think in the 3rd or 4th.
