Various trivial stuff
Nov. 14th, 2013 10:26 amTrivial stuff to do with writing and TV watching from the last week behind cut.
Some very, very slight spoilers for The Good Wife up to mid/late season 3 (and please, no spoilers for later on), and slight spoilers for Ripper Street season 2 ep 3.
Okay, in the last week, in what I would normally think of as fic-writing time, I've been pretty much mainlining eps of The Good Wife. I'm now four episodes from the end of season 3.
I can't remember when I last galloped through a show like this. As a rule, I like to take things slow when I'm watching new TV eps (took me a couple of years to watch all of The Wire, for instance). But I'm finding the show so gripping/entertaining that I can't stop watching and am actively having to stop myself from spoiler-hunting, as I don't have season 4 on DVD as yet.
Favourite things in the show: well, pretty much Alicia, Kalinda and Diane, three of the awesomest female characters in the history of television.
Following close behind: Eli Gold (a bravura performance from Alan Cummings), Peter Florrick himself (he's a git, but I find him interesting), David Lee, the horrid snarky divorce lawyer, Cary Agos (love the way the character subverts his preppy WASP exterior), a succession of wonderful character actors playing judges (special mention goes to Judge Abernathy, Judge Lessner, the one who makes you say 'in my opinion' all the time, Judge Sobel (a one-off, but a great one), and uber-sarcastic Judge Winter), and Carrie Preston (Arlene from True Blood) as the odd, and extremely clever Elizabth Tascioni.
Then there are great recurring 'villains' (if that's the right word) in lawyers from opposing firms, my favourite being the ghastly (understatement!) Pattie Nyholm.
I think this is the only show where I've happily sat through episode after episode of case of the week and found them all quite fascinating - sometimes upsetting, sometimes quite hilarious, my favourite being the season 3 ep Bitcoin for Dummies.
A real gem of a show. I hope they end it properly in a year or so and don't let it get tired and run-down in a way that won't do the characters and the story so far justice.
Other telly stuff: enjoyed this week's ep of Ripper Street. The premise - a gang of women kidnapping men opposed to the candidacy of the first woman to stand for the London County Council - didn't sound promising. But they managed to make something good of it. I'm impressed.
Speaking of Ripper Street, it's odd the way almost every review I come across talks about the show as if every episode featured the ghastly murders of prostitutes. Looking back over the list of episodes, there's only one that does that, which was the first one, where the show was dealing with the aftermath of the Ripper murders and the failed investigation. Where has this myth arisen from? I can only think it comes from people who only watched one episode (because it was the first) and haven't seen the show since.
Nothing much to say about Agents of SHIELD, except that the way Ward rescued Simmons in the last ep I saw was more than usually ridiculous.
As for writing, I've edited my final Spike/Giles story once. I don't think I managed to get rid of any of the problems it has. I'm going to print it out and edit it one more time. Then, I'm going to need help. :(
Also, the deadline for
letsgetitdone is fast approaching. I must at least post the penultimate Spike/Giles story, even if I can't get the final one done. Should warn everyone that it carries on straight from where the previous story left off, so if you're planning to read it, you'll need to refresh your memory, as I haven't posted any of this story for a year!

Finally, I want an icon of Thor on the London Underground from the new Thor movie. Will anyone make me one, or if not, can anyone point me to some screen caps and I'll have a bash at making one myself.

Date: 2013-11-15 11:01 am (UTC)There are a few nice screen caps
here, though none of the moment I wanted. I do like the ones of Thor about to kiss Jane in sunlight, though (with the church in the background) and Jane's sidekick Darcy (the girl in the hat) and her sidekick (the tall bloke) outside Greenwich Observatory. Unfortunately, everywhere I've looked only has screen caps for the trailers, which don't include the image I'm after.
Never mind, love. Thanks for the offer.
Re: The Good Wife. It really is worth persisting. I didn't really get involved with it until half way through the first season. Before that, I had trouble warming to the Sainted Alicia (she gets better, honest!) and thought the show was just another noble Lawyer (who is far better than she should be given her 15 years' absence from the profession) solves case of the week. But it's a lot more than that.
