Agent Carter again

So, I've watched both the episodes aired so far now. And made myself this icon, which I'm quite pleased with.

Have to admit, I love this so far, for all sorts of reasons. First: IMO the Captain America films (especially the first one) are by far the best of the Marvel movies (well, the first Iron Man is pretty good too). Second: I love dramas set in the 40s. Third: the production values are really good, giving the series the same ambience as the Captain America movie. Fourth: I really like Hayley Atwell and think she's very good. I even find her beating up men twice her size more believable than usual (possibly because she doesn't look like a teeny, fragile little doll (though she probably does in RL)). Fifth: lots of Brit character actors. Sixth: Enver Gjokai. He's great.

What's not to love really?

Actually, a possible seventh reason to love it is that it's only a mini series and therefore (presumably) will have a proper beginning, middle and end.

Always a good thing.

And which of course doesn't mean there couldn't be another series about Agent Carter with a different beginning, middle and end.

Okay, I'll bite! I missed the first 10 minutes, so I'll have to go back and catch up on what I'm sure set the mood nicely. Otherwise I mostly enjoyed it, though found a few things improbable and wish she had found ways to use her brilliance more often to overpower the bad guys. I mean, she's a trained soldier and all, but there's a limit to what physics can achieve. I think my favorite bit was when she disabled the bomb. Both times, actually.

I could have done without the fridging of the roommate. And why the heck wasn't the fact that there were dozens of people shot in the forehead with the same gun making a bit more of a splash? I mean, was life really so cheap in the post-war era? I think not. Usually these types of things lead to a bit of tabloid-fueled panic among the populace.

I like it, but I feel like they haven't really thought through some things, which would have made it even better.

In an unrelated note, MiAmor and I started watching "The Americans" on your recommendation, and it's fantastic. So, so riveting!

Do you have Amazon Prime, per chance? If so, they have an original series on that I enjoyed a lot, even though it didn't have any superheroes or spies or even sleuths: Mozart in the Jungle. It's the story of the New York Symphony and their acquisition of a charismatic and bohemian young conductor — Gael Garcia Bernal — and it's a total hoot. Very sex and drugs and, um, music of many eras.

I don't have Amazon Prime, I'm afraid, no. Don't have Netflix either. :( S is too tight to fork out for stuff like that and I don't currently have any money.

So pleased you're enjoying The Americans. It is excellent, isn't it (though there is one false note in season 1. Wonder if it'll seem like a false note to you).

As for Agent Carter, I'm afraid I didn't pick up on any of the things you mention. Well, apart from the room mate fridging, but at least it seems like Agent Carter is going to get another one.

In fact, though I said I love dramas set in the 40s, this - like the Captain America movie - is definitely a Marvel Universe/fanstasised version of that era. As in the movie, you wouldn't think there was any racial segregation at the period, and you know the sexist comments are only allowed so that Agent Carter can confound them.

I thought the first two episodes were quite good, too. Hayley Atwell is always good, and like you say, for the most part it shows that this seems to be written as one story where they know where all the puzzle pieces go. Plus, gotta love the wall-to-wall big band soundtrack. (Though part of me wishes they'd gone full-on period piece and done the whole thing in black and white with a classic orchestral soundtrack...)

One thing that did bug me was that voiceless killer who offed her roommate - presumably thinking it was her - and then asked his bosses for permission to kill her?

And the scene where Jarvis tells her she needs backup and connect with people can't save the world and be outside of it yada yada was so Angel it hurt.

But that scene of her (somewhat implausably) beating the crap out of a guy, intercut with the Captain America radio show - heee!

Agree that the fight intercut with the radio show sound effects was great. Hitting the joint of meat at the same time as Agent Carter was slugging her opponent was especially funny.

I just saw the pilot episode and it was very enjoyable. I like Peggy's characterization and Atwell's take on her. I agree that she looks believable in the fight scenes.

Also very pleased to se Enver Gjokaj. He deserves the best.
