Just watched this and...
Spoilers
No idea whether it even matters now whether I'm clueless about the books or not.
Anyway, I thought it was very exciting, am glad that Grey Worm isn't dead (probably), am wondering who the hell that woman is who seems to be working for the blokes in the golden masks. Am also wondering just when Cersei's idiotic decision to empower a bunch of nasty religious fanatics will come back to bite her in the arse (soon, please let it be soon). Likewise hoping that Ser Loras won't end up horribly dead and (and never expecting to think this) hoping that Littlefinger arriving back in Kingslanding will alter the balance in favour of the pro-brothel, yay!wine party (even though Littlefinger is still a git).
What else am I wondering?
Oh yes, how long will it be till Melisandre takes revenge on Jon for refusing her advances, and (along with Tyrion) whether it'll do poor Jorah a blind bit of good kidnapping Tyrion and presenting him to Dany (doesn't seem likely).
I also have my fingers firmly crossed that the show will allow Sansa to take horrible revenge on the horrible Boltons.
Not that sorry about Ser Barristan. I always saw him as a rival to Jorah. Still, glad he got an heroic death.
Finally, not sure what I think about the Sand Snakes. They're a bit campy, aren't they? I predict that Bronn will have sex with at least one of them. Possibly with all three. And I still think their idea of revenge is grotesque.
Finally, finally, did anyone think Ser Barristan's very Jossian final scene with Dany, which emphasised what a nice bloke Rhaegar Targaryan was, is setting us up for the revelation that Rhaegar never raped Lyanna Stark, who was actually in love with him and Jon Snow is their oddly combustible (if you remember that scene in season 1 where he saved Lord Mormont from the zombie?) son?
Just me, then.

Date: 2015-05-04 10:33 pm (UTC)Anyway yes, he was talking about Rhaegar and then it happened. Stannis also made an interesting comment about Ned Stark and Sansa went to see Lyanna's tomb. Is this all foreshadowing? I don't know if you are familiar with the popular L+R=J, which is only a theory so far so it won't spoil you anything.
Also - and I recently discovered this - George Martin stated that Targaryens are not fireproof. What happened at the pyre with Dany was a miracle and that they have more resistance than regular people, but eventually they burn too. I don't know if the showrunners are planning to change that.
I also want Sansa to take sweet revenge on the Boltons! Please, let her kill Ramsay! But honestly all my feelings for the Shireen & Stannis scene. It was so beautiful.

Date: 2015-05-04 10:48 pm (UTC)Aargh! I meant to mention that, but forgot. It was a very nice scene that showed Stannis in a somewhat different light.
As for Dany not being entirely fireproof, pish! to that, I say. I hope the show keeps her asbestos-y nature, even if the books say otherwise.

Date: 2015-05-05 01:46 am (UTC)I was struck by the number of Rhaegar mentions (and year the Barristam stories of Rhaegar the non violent studious type are in the book so we've been asked to wonder whether the rape thing was Robert unable to accept that Lyanna chose someone over him. However the rape story is out there so who knows what the objective truth is. ). At any rate all the Rhaegar and Lyanna mentions makes me hope for a confirm or deny of r+l=j theory. The stannis/Shireen scene was nice. I don't remember it from the book though my impression from the book is that the scene is a believable reflection of the emotion. And Cersei is an idiot. I hope Granny Tyrell can save Loras but we're off book so I just don't know!!

Date: 2015-05-05 02:49 pm (UTC)I think Grey Worm is still alive, but poor Ser Barristan is toast. Apparently, the actor was a little put out at this development because he knew his character was still alive in the books and was looking forward to what might come next. ;(
As for new counsellors, I suppose the way is being cleared for Tyrion. I just wish I didn't have a horrid feeling that Jorah, too, will be swept away by the end of the season. I know there's a clip of him fighting in the arena in the season preview. My worst case scenario is that Dany re-institutes these arena fights to placate the Meereenese, Jorah volunteers to fight because he thinks that if he loses she'll save him, and she...just doesn't.
I'd hate that. It would also, of course, mean that the show-runners have dispensed with Jorah's entire story arc that you hinted at, and I would be sad about that too. it sounded interesting.
And Cersei is an idiot.
Yeah, I wonder if she'd be so pleased with herself if she'd heard what the Sparrows were saying about Tommen.
I hope Granny Tyrell can save Loras but we're off book so I just don't know!!
I hope it's not an excuse to show a horrible violent execution. You just never know with this show. :(

Date: 2015-05-06 05:27 pm (UTC)We should know pretty soon if they're going that route.
Connington is a character left out of the show. He's an exhiles Weserosi knight loyal to the Targaryens who travelled with Tyrion prior to Tyrion being kidnapped by Jorah.
It's hard to say all of Conningtons story purpose because it hasn't all played out and was ongoing at the end of Dance with Dragons. It would basically hang a permanent sword of Damocles over Jorah's head, though, which you wouldn't like. It might ensure he gets to invade Westeros though as that was what Connington was doing last we saw him ( not that Jorrah was faring much better as he was heading into battle last we saw him).
Dance ended with a bunch of cliffhangers.

Date: 2015-05-06 06:44 pm (UTC)I wonder if GRRM has written down the rest of the plot in bullet points, just in case he decides one day that it's just too much trouble to write it all out?
I don't mind Jorah invading Westeros, I suppose, but I'd rather he stayed near(ish) to Dany.
Unless that means he ends up dead, of course. Which it could. :(

Date: 2015-05-05 04:51 am (UTC)And I think you are right about the sand snakes. They came off completely over the top. Maybe they will get a bit better over time. I found it curious that they did not switch target to Jaime once they knew, he was in Dorne. Way more honorable and guilty target than Myrcella.
I think they should have changed the plot all the way.

Date: 2015-05-05 02:51 pm (UTC)Yes, it just made me dislike them, when really, if it weren't that they want to kill Myrcella, I'd be quite sympathetic.

Date: 2015-05-05 03:54 pm (UTC)I'm really sad they offed Ser Barristan. He was my favorite character in Dance with Dragons. Even had his own chapters...
I guess they plan to speed up Tyrion meeting Dany (which has not really happened in the books yet) and becoming her advisor.

Date: 2015-05-05 04:06 pm (UTC)I was thinking that too, and consequently am a bit worried what it might mean for Jorah. :(

Date: 2015-05-05 04:42 pm (UTC)Might be that he plays some sort of suicidal savior role for her though. To complete his Spike image.
I think Tyrion might be a good leveling influence on Dany's black and white thinking.

Date: 2015-05-05 04:45 pm (UTC)I wouldn't mind that so much, as long as it doesn't happen until the final season.
I knew they would never be a couple. He's too old etc, etc.
I just want her to care about him again before he dies.

Huh. Interesting idea. Though how would that work in a canon where hair colour always gives away who your father was? Unless the white hair skipped a generation and passed to his wolf... (That is how genetics work, right?)
Looking forward to more Jorah/Tyrion scenes. This season is all about people travelling places and annoying each other. And I loved Tyrion's approach to getting his gag off.
And I'm really miffed that they didn't have Jaime say "I am not left-handed!" when fighting off that beach patrol.

Date: 2015-05-05 09:10 am (UTC)My entire knowledge of the series is based on what Shapinglight thinks, and what my daughter thinks :)
So I suppose it was almost inevitable that I misread your comment and thought she was in Waterdeep for a moment or two. I was looking forward to it until I realised that wasn't actually what you said!

Date: 2015-05-05 02:53 pm (UTC)Yes, and speaking of whom, I have a horrible feeling that when Jorah turns up in Meereen with Tyrion she's just going to reject him (Jorah, that is), and he's going to die too.
:Gloom:

It could well be in Westeros. ;)
