Sense8 again (last time, I promise)
Aug. 23rd, 2015 05:05 pmI finished my rewatch of Sense8 last night. Then I watched the half-hour 'making of' program about it. Still very, very impressed with it.
I doubt I'll be watching it again soon, and it's almost a year till we'll get season 2, so here are a few final random observations.
Spoilers behind cut.
Despite knowing it's not going to happen, I got all tense in that scene where Hernando (pretending to be Lito's bodyguard) ejected Joaquin from their apartment. The first time I watched it, I was sure that Joaquin was going to take out a knife and stab Hernando. I still couldn't convince myself it wouldn't happen.
Was struck by how much childhood trauma all but two -Kala and Lito -of the characters are living with. Worst affected are Nomi and Wolfgang, with Sun very close behind them and only not quite in the same bracket because she did have the love of her mother for a little while. Nomi's mother claimed to love her of course (or to love 'Michael'), but it didn't look like love to me, have to say. As for Wolfgang, since the only time we see his mother at all is in the birth scene, I guess we have to assume she disappeared from his life very early leaving him to be brought up (if that's the right word) by his horrible, abusive father.
Speaking of Hernando and Lito, does anyone else think it's probable that all the film people already know that Lito's gay? When Hernando turns up on the set to break up with Lito, you could almost hear the airquotes around the word 'friend' when the director guy told Lito Hernando wanted to speak to him.
I think I'm slightly clearer on the way the Sensates communicate with each other, but still puzzled by some things. Whispers has looked Will in the eyes, which means, apparently, that he can now see and feel what Will sees and feels. So, presumably, if Will is with anyone else from his cluster, Whispers can see them too. On the other hand, in the scene at the very beginning of the show, where Whispers 'visits' Angelica just before she blows her own brains out, Angelica is talking to Jonas, yet Whispers apparently can't see Jonas.
:Is confused:
And what is Whispers' deal anyway? Is it some sort of Sylar-from-Heroes type thing, where he wants all the Sensates' power for himself? If not, what? And why is he so much more powerful? Can't Will turn the tables on him and 'visit' Whispers whenever he wants and find out all his secrets?
Anyway, it looks like
beer_good_foamy is right, and Will may well have to spend most of season 2 unconscious if Whispers isn't to find out who everyone else in the cluster is. That would be rather dull for the actor.
I am looking forward to season 2, but I'm also apprehensive. As I said in a previous post, the ante will probably have to be upped next season, which could well mean someone dies. If it's not one of the Eight, it'll probably be one of their loved ones.
:Whimper:
Really don't want it.
And of course, for many of the Eight, their personal circumstances are perilous, Whispers or no Whispers. I can't believe that Lito, Hernando and Daniela have seen the last of Joaquin, for instance, or that Daniela's 'importing, exporting' family won't cause trouble in some way. As for Sun, she's in a very bad situation, and extremely vulnerable being stuck in prison.
:Is afraid for all of them:
Finally, I really enjoyed the 'making of' program. Was good to know that, with a few exceptions, the characters, both major and minor, were actually from the cities where the show is filmed. I'm not sure why they couldn't find a Kenyan actor to play Capheus, or an Icelandic one to play Riley (and Tuppence Middleton looked absolutely nothing like anyone else in Iceland), but as far as I can see, these two, along with Freema Agyeman, were the only ones in the entire cast putting on accents that weren't their own.
Lots of scenes made me cry this time around. I think I probably cried the most over Capheus's mother having to leave her baby girl with the nuns.
Okay, I've probably bored most of you enough with this. Done.

If so, I shall be grateful.
