Game of Thrones Season 6 Eps 1-4
May. 16th, 2016 06:53 pmStill finding getting my head around posting very difficult for some reason, so here, very belatedly, are some brief thoughts on the first four episodes of Game of Thrones season 6. Still clueless about the books, btw, but I doubt that matters any more.
To be honest I could distil what I think about the season so far into just one sentence, which is,
God, I'm sick of Ramsey Bolton. And even sicker of him after episode four, in which he offed a character I really liked and was glad to see back on the show (Osha) in a completely offhand way, then smirked about it. Mind you, he does smirk a lot, mostly before or after horribly murdering/raping someone. So, not only is he very unpleasant, he's incredibly dull and boring.
More than anything, I'd like someone to kill him in an even more offhand way than he just killed Osha- the way Indiana Jones shoots that bloke with the sword in the first Indiana Jones film- and for the action to just close over him as if he never existed in the first place. I can only put his longevity in the series down to the fact that Benioff and Weiss get off on the character somehow, or have the mistaken (in my case anyway) belief that the audience just loves a psycho.
Sorry, no. And in any case, even if they do get rid of Ramsey Bolton, there are still plenty of psychos in the show. They're just not quite so one-note.
The boring Boltons apart, in the series so far I've been completely unsurprised by Jon Snow coming back from the dead, a little surprised by Brienne not ratting on Melisandre to Ser Davos about the horrible death of Princess Shireen, pleasantly surprised by Sansa's determination to get Winterfell back, moderately interested in what's going on with Arya, not terribly interested (though not actually bored) by events in Kingslanding and Meereen, and quite enjoyed seeing Dany prove that she's still inflammable. Looks like she might get that Dothraki army Khal Drogo promised her after all.
We'll see how it goes. As things stand, if I have to endure another season of the boring Boltons after this one I may bale on the show for good. It's become a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Date: 2016-05-16 06:14 pm (UTC)And I still think this is Ramsey's final season.
I did love the Jon/Sansa hug x a lot.

That scene where Jon and Sansa are reunited, though. *snff* And Dany's big moment. And I'm actually kind of liking Bran's storyline so far, and not even just because of Max von Sydow. I want more backstory on what we thought we knew. And if Arya finally gets around to actually start killing people after 4 seasons of muttering about it, I won't complain. It's a good, if not terribly surprising, season so far.

Date: 2016-05-16 09:58 pm (UTC)Yes, me too. In fact, I completely meant to mention the fact that this was the first time since season 1 that any of the stray Stark children had actually met each other.
I hope someone icons that moment, or if not, I'll have to do it myself.
And I still think this is Ramsey's final season.
I so hope you're right. Maybe Ramsey will think he's won again only to get squished by a passing White Walker?

Date: 2016-05-16 10:04 pm (UTC)Me too. Joffrey seems like a nice, reasonable psycho in comparison, and I don't remember him ever being dull. Also, Osha was a gazillion times more interesting a character than Ramsey. :(
I agree about Bran's storyline. It is interesting. I'm hoping we get to see more of Ned Stark's past, and possibly learn who Jon Snow's real parents are. After all, the show is off piste now. They can do what the hell they like.

Grr - there is something wrong with the sound on the YouTube clip of John and Sansa's reunion!

Date: 2016-05-17 09:56 am (UTC)I hope you're right, but I fear he's just one of these horrible characters who'll remain unkillable and just when you think you're rid of them they leap out of hiding and stab you in the back. :( Even if he overreaches himself attacking the Nights' Watch, I suspect he'll survive and go whining to Cersei, who'll probably make him a duke or something.
ETA: I also liked the Tormond/Brienne scene. Tormond's probably wondering if she has giant blood like he does.

And I always love scenes with Brienne.
Me too. Though the scene from the series trailer with Podric being grabbed by someone has me worried. I'm afraid it's going to be yet another predictable horrific Ramsey murder, to torment and terrorise his opponents.

Date: 2016-05-17 12:09 pm (UTC)I find the scenes with the High Sparrow one of the most boring parts, but I think Cercei is lying about what Toman told her and then she told the Tyrells and that she is hoping Marjorie gets killed.
I am also worried that Tyrion has made a mistake and something bad will happen to him (not death, just badness.)
I was actually relieved that Osha was killed so quickly and that we did not have to suffer more torture. I am worried for poor little Rikon, but I too think that Ramsey's days are numbered.
I think the Arya part has been boring as well and am afraid they are taking her down a road she cannot be redeemed from.
I loved the Dani part and hope this means some good/exciting things for her storyline.
There are now 6 episodes left this year and the producers are saying that the last two seasons may be shorter (not ten episodes,) so I think they will have to start converging some storylines in order to move things along.

Date: 2016-05-17 05:37 pm (UTC)I agree. I bet he's wondering if she has giant blood in her ancestry. I also agree about the High Sparrow being boring, and suspect you're only too right about Margaery. Cersei would be delighted to see her dead, even though she knows how much it would hurt Tommen.

Well, Ramsey could still torture Rickon. I hope he won't, but as long as he has Rickon in his power I feel like Benioff and Weiss are dangling that possibility over us.
Not sure what will happen with Arya, but yes, it does seem hard to believe she undo the decision she seems to have made to become one of the Faceless Men.

I didn't know that. I'm glad to hear they're looking towards an end in the near(ish) future, though. This show could really do with some resolution soon.

Date: 2016-05-18 12:47 am (UTC)I just hope someone walks by and stabs Ramsey and he just dies, no fanfare, nothing. Actually, it would be great if he was out in the woods and Jon just randomly came by and killed him, not even knowing who he was.
THIS SHOW has clearly turned me into a blood-thirsty revenge seeking fiend!
