I finally got around to watching the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who.

I enjoyed it very much.

My favourite bit?

The fact that the Doctor had a framed photograph of granddaughter Susan on his desk.

I really loved that.

But it was lots of fun otherwise too, and I liked Bill a lot.

Yes, I liked that too! The pics on his desk were the wife and granddaughter, just like a real person :D

Plus, I've always wanted some back story for Susan. Who are her parents, etc? I doubt we'll ever find out, but I'm glad she's not forgotten altogether.

Though having glanced quickly at a Doctor Who wiki, it seems her history might have been filled in in one of these audio books, or novels, about which I know nothing

I think we might find out one day! Presumably River is the grandmother and one day a writer won't be able to resist explaining the rest of it.

And who knows, by the time they get round to it they might be able to CGI Susan herself onto a motion capture actress or something.

They could, but since she's a time lord, she could look like anyone.

No, she isn't. But if Susan is the Doctor's granddaughter, she has to be one, doesn't she? Or partly at least.

Well if the Doctor is only half timelord and River is human then it all depends on who Susan's other parent is/was. If they were timelord then she could actually carry more timelord genes than the Doctor himself, if they were human then she is only one eighth timelord, which isn't much.

As regards regeneration, it would depend on if the regeneration gene is recessive or dominant. We actually know the answer to this because the Doctor is only half timelord but he regenerates, so we can say the gene must be dominant. However, if Susan's only timelord inheritance is through the Doctor, Susan has only a 1 in 4 chance of carrying that gene. If her other parent was timelord she has a 3 in 4 chance.

Since when is the Doctor only half timelord? I seem to have missed something somewhere.

They said he was half human back in the Paul McGann film. I assume that is part of why he was treated as such an outsider as a boy. We've seen his mother is a timelord at some point during the Tennant era, so it was presumably his father who was human.

Eh, those are dubiously canonical. (IIRC didn't they adapt several of the Seventh Doctor's novels to be Tenth Doctor TV shows? Human Nature was one of them.)

I would really, really love it if that were more than just a nod to old school fans, and presaged Susan showing up at some point.

Me too! I have my fingers crossed.

After all, if she really is a Gallifreyan, she doesn't have to be played by Carole Ann Ford (though she perfectly well could be). She could look like anyone.

I gave up on Doctor Who sometime during the whole Clara saga. Couldn't stand the storyline or the character. Maybe it's time to look again?

Well, give it a week or so, I guess? They could completely spoil it this week. ;)

Yes, I'm rather hoping it actually means something and that we might see more of Susan. Or at least learn more about how she came to be. Who her parents are, for instance.

When Bill first came in and stood beside the Tardis, I thought, "She really reminds me of Susan." It was her shape and the cut of her trousers. Then, when she asked the Doctor why he was willing to tutor her, he looked at Susan's photograph, so she obviously reminded him of Susan as well!

I liked "Doctor what?"

I don't really remember Susan well enough, but I'm hoping the similarities are deliberate.
