shapinglightBecause I currently find myself at a bit of a loose end, I seem to have been watching an awful lot of telly the last few days.
For the most part, this has been Lucifer season 2. The show returns for its final five episodes next week, and I took it into my head that I needed to re-watch all the episodes so far.
No real spoilers for them behind cut, plus mention of episode two of Doctor Who, The Last Kingdom and Versailles, if anyone cares about those.
Must admit, I found bits of the first few Lucifer season 2 episodes dragged somewhat (except for episode 2, which is great). This is because I nearly always find the procedural stuff so dull, and some of the guest actors are really...not that good. But I soon found myself back to enjoying the show as much as ever and can't wait for it to come back. Okay, it doesn't give your brain much of a workout, but it's fun and it makes me laugh (out loud sometimes), and that suits me just fine at the moment.
I can't remember ever laughing at Versailles, even though it does have some preposterous elements (not least George Blagden/King Louis' creepy little pencil moustache), and season 2 episode 1 was no exception, though the scene where Louis deflects another of his poor queen's desperate attempts to connect with him by making her and Madame de Montespan (his mistress) choose a new wife for his (currently sulking in a corner) gay younger brother, the Duke of Orleans, was funny in an ironic sort of way. Women have a really thin time of it in this show - not in the sense that there aren't any, or they aren't strong characters, but in the sense that they're treated so horribly. Way worse than the Dark Age women in The Last Kingdom, in which, if men are horrible to them, it's because they happen to be particularly horrible men, not because that's just the way women get treated.
How realistic any of this is of either era, I couldn't say, but I suspect Versailles at least is not far off the mark (in this respect anyway).
Anyway, I enjoy Versailles, but almost every episode has a scene I have to fast forward through because of torture, and this one was no exception. Also, is it just me, or was that whole 'kidnap the Dauphin' plot in season 1 a bit of a damp squib?
Finally, Doctor Who, which continues to be delightful. I love Bill. I so wish we could have had more of Capaldi's Doctor and her. One season is not enough. In fact, three seasons of Capaldi is not enough. I feel like I've been cheated. :(
ETA: Should add that I'm still absolutely loving season 5 of The Americans, and looking forward to American Gods, which starts next week, and Sense 8 season 2, which...also starts next week.
That's a lot of TV to get through. ;(

The whole Dauphin being kidnapped was completely unrealistic to me. Probably because it never happened.
I've only seen one episode on Doctor Who so far, but I really loved it!

Date: 2017-04-30 02:30 pm (UTC)In reality non of the King's children was raised in Versailles. The air around the Palace wasn't considered healthy. And Louis didn't much care for his son, poor thing. On the other hand it was considered normal for the nobility to have their children raised elsewhere.

Anyway, yes, if ep 3 was the one with the serial killer at the Not-Facebook place, then I agree, the procedural element of that ep was the worst of the series.
