shapinglight: (Dany (fire) season 7)

Well, I'm quite liking it so far, though...

Spoilers behind cut.

...it is all rather grim.

To be expected, now that winter had stopped shilly-shallying about and actually arrived. It took its time, didn't it? In fact, it's still taking its time. That army of the dead that Sam saw at the end of season 2 hasn't even reached the Wall yet. I know they took a detour in season whichever-it-was (four?) to Hardhome but even so, they've been dawdling. And we still haven't got to the bottom of whether or not the White Walkers are all Craster's sons, and why they're so sexist. I mean, have you seen a girl White Walker yet, because I haven't?

Anyway, south of the Wall, everyone outside 'the north' is still pretty much in denial about the whole thing and too busy fighting each other anyway. Even Daenerys Mother-of-Dragons Targaryan doesn't believe in the White Walkers (which is a bit much, IMO, for a woman who seems to be completely incombustible). Mind you, with the loss of all her allies - the Greyjoys, the Sands, the Tyrells - after only about five minutes of waging war, I suppose she has other things on her mind.

The show is whittling away minor characters thick and fast now. I don't care about the stupid Sand Snakes or Ellaria Sand (and am pathetically grateful that Cersei's punishment of her turned out to be a lot less visceral than I was expecting - was all set to skip it entirely), but I'm sad about Granny Tyrell and glad she got to gloat a bit over the increasingly culpable Jaime Lannister before she went. I say increasingly culpable, because Granny Tyrell is right about Cersei. She is a monster (I don't think it's at all accidental that Cersei now has the exact same hairstyle that Joffrey had), and Jaime knows that perfectly well, yet he still supports her. Idiot! I'd like to think he'll turn on her (especially when it turns out that knowing Tyrion didn't kill Joffrey makes not a blind bit of difference to her vindictiveness towards him), but I'm pretty sure it won't. Maybe he'll do the honourable thing and jump off a tower, taking Cersei with him. That's about the best outcome I can see for him.

I'm not expecting to see the back of Cersei this season, though. I'm pretty sure she'll be around till the bitter end. She might even win the current war, who knows? I'm pretty certain, given they filmed a whole scene about how Anton Lesser's character (whose name I can't remember - the nasty little inventor guy) had invented a weapon to kill the dragons with, means one of the dragons at least is going to die. Sad about that. They're pretty much my favourite characters, if only for their potential to wipe out all the nastier inhabitants of Westeros - Cersei, Jaime, horrible Uncle Urine Greyjoy, Littlefinger - with one bout of indigestion.

Littlefinger, yeah. He's a nasty piece of work, isn't he? I wish he'd get the hell away from Sansa, over whom he's had, and continues to have, a pretty malign influence. I know she keeps pushing him away, but it always seems pretty half-hearted to me. It's great to see her growing in confidence and so on, but I hate the way he's twisting her out of shape. Bran's arrival might have helped prevent that happening if Bran were still Bran. But he's not. He's just...weird. Poor Sansa! She was so glad to see him, but it was like she was hardly there to him.

But I have liked Sansa's scenes, and her interactions with Jon. In fact, I've liked a lot of things, including Jon (apart from his mopey expression), every scene with Sam in it (my favourite human character, and he saved Jorah. Yay!), the fact that Melisandre really regrets the past (almost makes me like her), Jim Broadbent as the chief maester, Arya meeting Nymeria, Arya meeting Hot Pie (though I wish Hot Pie hadn't said what he did about being a survivor like her, because it probably means he's doomed), Missandei and Grey Worm being cute together, little Lady Mormont still being awesome, etc, etc. Lots of stuff.

It does all feel very endgame-y, though. Only four more episodes to go, then a whole year (I believe) before the final six. Really annoying to have to wait that long.

Those of you reading this on Dreamwidth, apologies for the rubbish icon. So few people make icons these days so I've had to make my own season 7 ones, and I'm not a very good icon maker at the best of times. Doesn't help that the colour palette so far in season 7 is very dark indeed due to the aforementioned winter being finally, actually here.
