Game of Thrones Season 7 Eps 1-3
Aug. 2nd, 2017 02:28 pmWell, I'm quite liking it so far, though...
Spoilers behind cut.
...it is all rather grim.
To be expected, now that winter had stopped shilly-shallying about and actually arrived. It took its time, didn't it? In fact, it's still taking its time. That army of the dead that Sam saw at the end of season 2 hasn't even reached the Wall yet. I know they took a detour in season whichever-it-was (four?) to Hardhome but even so, they've been dawdling. And we still haven't got to the bottom of whether or not the White Walkers are all Craster's sons, and why they're so sexist. I mean, have you seen a girl White Walker yet, because I haven't?
Anyway, south of the Wall, everyone outside 'the north' is still pretty much in denial about the whole thing and too busy fighting each other anyway. Even Daenerys Mother-of-Dragons Targaryan doesn't believe in the White Walkers (which is a bit much, IMO, for a woman who seems to be completely incombustible). Mind you, with the loss of all her allies - the Greyjoys, the Sands, the Tyrells - after only about five minutes of waging war, I suppose she has other things on her mind.
The show is whittling away minor characters thick and fast now. I don't care about the stupid Sand Snakes or Ellaria Sand (and am pathetically grateful that Cersei's punishment of her turned out to be a lot less visceral than I was expecting - was all set to skip it entirely), but I'm sad about Granny Tyrell and glad she got to gloat a bit over the increasingly culpable Jaime Lannister before she went. I say increasingly culpable, because Granny Tyrell is right about Cersei. She is a monster (I don't think it's at all accidental that Cersei now has the exact same hairstyle that Joffrey had), and Jaime knows that perfectly well, yet he still supports her. Idiot! I'd like to think he'll turn on her (especially when it turns out that knowing Tyrion didn't kill Joffrey makes not a blind bit of difference to her vindictiveness towards him), but I'm pretty sure it won't. Maybe he'll do the honourable thing and jump off a tower, taking Cersei with him. That's about the best outcome I can see for him.
I'm not expecting to see the back of Cersei this season, though. I'm pretty sure she'll be around till the bitter end. She might even win the current war, who knows? I'm pretty certain, given they filmed a whole scene about how Anton Lesser's character (whose name I can't remember - the nasty little inventor guy) had invented a weapon to kill the dragons with, means one of the dragons at least is going to die. Sad about that. They're pretty much my favourite characters, if only for their potential to wipe out all the nastier inhabitants of Westeros - Cersei, Jaime, horrible Uncle Urine Greyjoy, Littlefinger - with one bout of indigestion.
Littlefinger, yeah. He's a nasty piece of work, isn't he? I wish he'd get the hell away from Sansa, over whom he's had, and continues to have, a pretty malign influence. I know she keeps pushing him away, but it always seems pretty half-hearted to me. It's great to see her growing in confidence and so on, but I hate the way he's twisting her out of shape. Bran's arrival might have helped prevent that happening if Bran were still Bran. But he's not. He's just...weird. Poor Sansa! She was so glad to see him, but it was like she was hardly there to him.
But I have liked Sansa's scenes, and her interactions with Jon. In fact, I've liked a lot of things, including Jon (apart from his mopey expression), every scene with Sam in it (my favourite human character, and he saved Jorah. Yay!), the fact that Melisandre really regrets the past (almost makes me like her), Jim Broadbent as the chief maester, Arya meeting Nymeria, Arya meeting Hot Pie (though I wish Hot Pie hadn't said what he did about being a survivor like her, because it probably means he's doomed), Missandei and Grey Worm being cute together, little Lady Mormont still being awesome, etc, etc. Lots of stuff.
It does all feel very endgame-y, though. Only four more episodes to go, then a whole year (I believe) before the final six. Really annoying to have to wait that long.
Those of you reading this on Dreamwidth, apologies for the rubbish icon. So few people make icons these days so I've had to make my own season 7 ones, and I'm not a very good icon maker at the best of times. Doesn't help that the colour palette so far in season 7 is very dark indeed due to the aforementioned winter being finally, actually here.

Date: 2017-08-02 02:51 pm (UTC)And did the Dothraki horses nearly all die? I'm assuming not, although the wikipedia summary barely mentions what they are up to.

Date: 2017-08-02 06:56 pm (UTC)Also, and seriously, fuck Theon.
But I love that we got a Nymeria cameo, I love that prophecy twist that Dany might be the Prince, I love that Cersei gets to actually be a ruthless asshole for now...

Yeah, I probably should be applauding her ruthless awesomeness, but I keep remembering how she brought that whole mess with the High Sparrow on herself and how completely horrible she is.
As for Theon, I feel kind of bad for him. Like the bloke on the ship said, if he'd tried to save Yara he would have died himself and probably still not saved her. But now he has to do something to redeem himself. Again.
After Uncle Urine captured the Sands and Yara I got seriously concerned about nasty rape-y stuff in the offing. That hasn't happened with the Sands (maybe Benioff and Weiss are losing their touch?) but it still could happen with Yara. :(

Date: 2017-08-02 10:40 pm (UTC)Which, by now, is my main complaint w Theon. I know it's probably more realistic this way, but I'm tired of it. If he's not going to snap out of it, why is he still in the story?
I did love watching the sand snakes get theirs though. As nasty as it was, at least it was in battle or offscreen. And Olenna's last stand was glorious.
"Uncle Urine" - love it! I've been calling him Göran Greyjoy after our former PM but that's even better.

Date: 2017-08-03 09:50 am (UTC)Hopefully, it'll just be a temporary relapse and he'll save Yara and die heroically fighting at her side, or helping her kill Uncle Urine, or something.
"Uncle Urine" - love it!
It seems to suit him. ;) Is your ex-PM that bad, then?
Obviously, Cersei has no intention of actually marrying him. Or anyone. She's going to string him along for as long as she possibly can, isn't she, then get rid of him. I think I'll enjoy that (as long as he hasn't killed too many characters I actually like in the meantime).
And Olenna's last stand was glorious.
She was brilliant. I'm really going to miss her.

Date: 2017-08-03 05:42 am (UTC)Casterly Rock is on the other side of the continent. It should have taken the fleets a while to get there. And also Dragon Stone is really near to King's Landing (at the entry of Blackwater bay). If Dany just took the time to go up once with a Dragon, she would have seen the ginormous fleet in the bay.
I don't mind it so much as the series is more about dramaturgic effect, but I wonder how it will be done in the books.
Anyhow I hope Uncle Urine and the plot device fleet will be sunk soon. I'm also a bit afraid at least on of the Dragons is going to die. I wonder if they'll hook up with Jon, now that he is at Dragonstone.
I liked the little Stark reunion a lot. I figure as everybody is suddenly so fast, Arya will join them soon.

Date: 2017-08-03 09:56 am (UTC)Yes, and Jon got to Dragonstone very quickly too, considering he only seemed to have a small boat. I'd been assuming there was a bigger one anchored out at sea, but Uncle Urine's magic fleet would probably have picked it off by now.
I think we must be meant to assume that the magic fleet is so ginormous it can be split in two with one part turning up at Casterly Rock while the other is still at Kingslanding?
I'm also a bit afraid at least on of the Dragons is going to die.
I think it's definite. Otherwise why waste money shooting a scene where the nasty little inventor guy shows Cersei how they're going to do it?

I expect her to turn up next week but suspect the meeting between her and Sansa won't be as joyful. They never got on. I suspect they still won't.

Date: 2017-08-05 03:40 pm (UTC)I'd really like her to succeed, have to say. And maybe she can get rid of the Mountain while she's about it?
