Sense8 Season 2
Aug. 8th, 2017 02:50 pmHaven't mentioned as yet that I watched Sense8 season 2.
Spoilers behind cut.
This is possibly because, before I'd got very far with it, Netflix cancelled it, and I always find that makes my desire to talk about a show plummet. That said, I was not particularly upset at the time - partly because far more upsetting stuff was going on in RL, and partly because I just wasn't enjoying it as much as season 1.
I'm not really sure why, to be honest. All the elements I liked in season 1 were still in place, and it didn't take me long to warm to the new Capheus. By the end, I really liked him. As for Lito, Hernando and Dany, I'd watch a show about the three of them any time.
In fact, in the end, of the eight sensates, I thought Capheus and Lito got the best stories - mainly because they were nothing to do with the ongoing plot to defeat Whispers. There were elements of Nomi's story that I liked very much too, but way too many scenes where she was just an adjunct to the Whispers plot (the proposal scene in the last episode still made me tear up, though), which IMO dragged everything down.
Not that there wasn't peril involved. There was plenty. In fact, the last episode was an action-fest. I was on the edge of my seat through most of it. Unfortunately, though, as the final credits rolled, I found myself thinking, well, that was silly.
This is because it was so ridiculously unlikely that the Eight could all jump on planes from wherever they were in the world and go and do what they did in London. I appreciate they could get knowledge from each other, but I still think it extremely unlikely that Capheus's journey would have gone without a hitch, or that Sun would have waltzed out of South Korea with so little difficulty.
Oh well, it is all still great fun, and if not quite so full of uplifting moments as season 1, there are enough of them to keep you interested. I am very, very glad Netflix caved to fan pressure and agreed to fund a final two hour episode.
At least the story will get a proper ending.

Well, up to a point. I didn't like Sylvester McCoy's character one bit. I thought he was a horrible cliche. The nasty Italian woman was good, though.
ETA: It was the one netflix originial production I really loved.
Did you not care for Stranger Things, then? I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I adored it.

Date: 2017-08-09 02:09 pm (UTC)I also loved the inclusivity. It really showed that thinking inclusive can vastly improve writing instead of hampering it.
I liked Stranger Things and I like a few other shows on netflix (Kimmy Schmidt comes to mind) but Sense 8 was the only one I got really emotionally involved with. I have high hopes for the new neflix Star Trek though.

Date: 2017-08-08 11:31 pm (UTC)Yeah that was my immediate thought as well, how would they have explained this absence to others?

Yes, besides my love of threesomes, I think that their story had both depth but also lightness, as well as a sufficiently independent track as you mentioned, which made it the most successful overall.

Date: 2017-08-09 01:33 pm (UTC)Especially given Capheus had never been on a plane before (except when 'visiting'?) How on earth did he explain it to his mother.

It really could stand on its own in many ways. The three of them are just so wonderful together.

Date: 2017-08-10 08:19 pm (UTC)I am really happy that we'll get a proper ending. I love the show - I don't need it to go on forever, I only need a proper send-off.
Lito, Hernando and Dany are such darlings. They have such a beautiful relationship! Also love Nomi and Amanida. Great couple!
Actually, I love all 8, even Kala, who sometimes annoys me. A lot of the support characters are interesting and Whispers was wonderfully creepy. All in all, Sense8 ranks highly in my TV show Top Ten. :)

Date: 2017-08-12 01:19 pm (UTC)I love Kala, have to say, and I love Kala and Wolfgang. I can understand why Kala is torn, though. Rajan is fundamentally a very sweet young man. I can see why she doesn't want to hurt him.
Also love Nomi and Amanida. Great couple!
They are, which is why their lack of awesome moments (as opposed to season 1) in this season made me a bit grumpy. There were some, of course - notably the proposal scene - but they spent too much time hovering over computers.

Date: 2017-08-12 06:26 am (UTC)I really liked s2, overall. Lito and Sun especially. Although I was not happy with the mean seductress who kept turning up in Wolfgang's mind, and I could have done with more Amanita, too.

Date: 2017-08-12 01:21 pm (UTC)Yes, me too. She didn't have enough time to be awesome, IMO.
Does knowing there's going to be a proper ending give you more motivation to finish watching the show as it stands? It did me.
