This issue is pretty action heavy.

Spoilers behind cut.

For one thing, Spike kills Deathlok.

Well, it's not actually Deathlok. It's a soldier, who has been enhanced both magically and cybernetically to defend a secret (and extremely evil) government research centre in San Francisco that Buffy,Willow, Spike and Faith break into, where Initiative-type scientists appear to be creating lots of such hybrids. The poor soldier actually wants Spike to kill him, btw. He hates what he's become and wants it to end. I'm surprised Buffy lets Spike go through with it, actually. I'd expect her to at least try to find another solution.

Maybe it's meant to show just how desperate these times are, because they are. The vampire massacre of an entire town may have turned out to be a stitch-up job, but other killings of humans by escaped supernatural beings are taking place. Still, at least Buffy and co now know who is behind the whole thing - ie. who set the dragon on San Francisco in the first place At least, they think they do.

Turns out I was right and also wrong. The vice president is involved. However, when Willow casts a spell on him to force him to confess (after the gang have kidnapped him and temporarily replaced him with Xander - just go with it, okay?) he admits that he's only in it for the money. There's someone else - someone who, unlike the vice president, knows what they're doing with all the stolen magic. But the vice president doesn't know who it is. In other words, the government may look bad, but they're not the ultimate villain.

Meanwhile, time is running out. It's only days before a satellite is launched that will drain magic from supernatural beings all over the country. Buffy tries again to get Dawn and Spike - whose entire existences depend on magic - to leave the country, but of course they won't. They want to stay and fight and Buffy has to agree.

Dum-dum-dummmm!

Only two issues to go and no word yet about a season 12. In many ways, I'd be glad if this was the last season of the Buffy comics, but we'll see, I suppose.
