I haven't really made a proper post all month, have I?
I don't know quite why, given that I used to be reasonably chatty online. I've been busy, but lots of you are busy and you still manage to post. I dunno. :(
I do know that expecting anyone to comment on my posts when I've hardly been commenting myself for weeks now is a bit presumptuous, but here is one anyway.
It's mostly about Lucifer, the beginning of season 3 of which is only ten days away now, but with mention of The Expanse, which I started watching the other day - inspired by a wonderful BBC documentary about the end of the Cassini Saturn probe mission, and these wonderful icons by
sheliak of photos of Saturn and its moons taken by Cassini.
Very vague spoilers (so vague they're not really spoilers at all) for the first three episodes of The Expanse season 1, speculation about season 3 of Lucifer but no real spoilers if you've seen seasons 1 & 2. Brief mention also of The Good Fight. No spoilers.
I guess it was inevitable, but I'm beginning to suffer the consequences of too-invested fannishness where Lucifer is concerned, the way I did with BtVS back in the day. It's not nearly as bad (I hope I've learned my lesson in that regard), but even so enough for me to feel extremely disgruntled about a certain plot development I accidentally spoilered myself for coming up at the beginning of the season. I won't say what it is, obvs, beyond that it's nothing like as bad as what happened in BtVS season 6 (or similar to it in any way), and that if I grit my teeth, I can even see why it was bound to happen, if only for practical reasons. Still miffed about it, though, and increasingly miffed every time I see fans raving about Tom Welling and how good looking he is and how they can't wait to see him in the show, and how glad they are he's going to be in so many episodes (15 of the 22, apparently).
I'm probably being really unfair given how long ago it was, but based on the solitary season of Smallville I yawned my way through so I could watch James Marsters playing Brainiac, I have zero enthusiasm for seeing Welling in anything, and though I know love triangles are a TV drama staple, I hate the idea of a Lucifer/Chloe/Marcus Pierce one. In fact, I hate the entire idea of this Marcus Pierce. To me, writing yet another character into the show just means fewer scenes for established characters I'd rather see more of.
And before I start to sound too much like a disgruntled 'Core Four' 'shipper in the later seasons of BtVS, I'll stop.
Nearly finished my (third, or possibly fourth) re-watch of Lucifer from the beginning. Only two more episodes to go, which I hope to watch on Sunday. I'm a big fan of season 1, have to say. It's darker than season 2 and I like that. Season 2 definitely has a softer edge, because of the emphasis on Lucifer and Chloe as a couple. And okay, I'm resigned now to the fact that Show!Lucifer, unlike his comics counterpart, is stuck in the role of rebellious teenage son who disrespected his father one too many times, got slapped down hard for it and has been sulking about it ever since, because the show is about Lucifer's redemption, not about his desire for liberty at any cost, but I do think it could do with more darkness.
Maybe Tom Welling's character will bring some and I'll realise I was completely wrong about him all along. Here's hoping.
Will finish with a repeat of my speculation that Lucifer's attempt to show Chloe who he really is will result in him finding he's unable to bring out his true face in her presence. I've been trying to keep an eye on these things all through my re-watch and, as of the last two episodes of season 2, Lucifer's desire power is the only supernatural ability he seems able to use around Chloe - as long as he uses it on someone else, not her. He hasn't used his super-strength in her presence, or with her nearby, all through season 2, and though it's not stated anywhere, I suspect he probably can't any more. So it only makes sense that his true face won't come out when Chloe's around and his attempt to show it to her will only reinforce her belief that he's a bit (more than a bit) crazy.
Finally, I hope being spoilered will teach me to be a bit more careful about following links on Twitter. In fact, I should stay well away from the place. It's pretty poisonous, and the occasional fun picture of the Lucifer cast hanging out together tweeted by one of them is possibly not enough of a reward for wading through the oceans of vitriol. :(
Anyone else watched The Expanse? I think I remember
tinny talking about it, maybe? I had thought of watching it a while back but Netflix only had season 1 and I knew there was a season 2 and began to think that maybe they weren't going to have it (even though it appears to be one of their original series, which is weird). But then season 2 went up, and then I watched the Cassini program, and suddenly it seemed like the time to watch it. I've seen three episodes so far and am very impressed with how well thought out it is. Terrific world-building and (to my admittedly limited knowledge) scientifically/engineering-wise very well-crafted. None of that would matter, of course, if the characters were rubbish, but I am liking the survivors of the Canterbury very much at least, even if I'm not so keen on the policeman character. Looking forward to watching more when I get the chance.
I finished watching The Good Fight. Have to say, I enjoyed it way more than the last three seasons of The Good Wife (the absence of Alicia certainly helped) and am really looking forward to season 2, which, hopefully, I'll be able to watch as it airs instead of months later. I do wonder, though, if Rose Leslie is always being asked on set, "Go on, say it. Just say it!" and, after some grumping and grousing, she gives a big sigh, clears her throat and then says, in her best Middlesborough accent, "You knuh nothing Jon Snuh."
Do you think she does?
Ironic, I suppose, that I've finally managed to post something when I'm about to go away for the weekend. Back on Sunday.

Date: 2017-09-22 05:00 pm (UTC)I thought she was Scottish?
I saw someone suggest Lucifer will persuade Chloe by showing his wings, not his face. Which would be a nicer way to do it and less likely to induce a freak out like Linda had. No idea if he will be able to show them to her of course, but if he can't we can expect some jokes about not being able to get them up.
Maybe it will be Lucifer who falls for the new lieutenant, not Chloe. That would make a nice change from the expectations.

Date: 2017-09-22 08:04 pm (UTC)Haha, I remember that too. On the one hand he had the more difficult task of playing a straight arrow superhero but on the other I was not impressed by him or his acting chops.

Part of me wonders what they'd be up in arms about but the other part realizes it could be absolutely anything.
I talked about The Expanse, though not a lot. And I'll put it this way, if you like the world building and the plotting, it will only get better.

Date: 2017-09-22 09:00 pm (UTC)I tried The Expanse, and I think it's very well done, but I am old and cranky, and apparently that show hit my "fed up with all the stories being all about the men," button, and I just... stopped. SL watches it and loves it, and I don't HATE it, but I just don't care. The women seem to be... token. Or something I'm not being articulate about.
I look forward to your posts. Are you going to watch the Star Trek?

Date: 2017-09-22 09:31 pm (UTC)I fully expect the show to milk the whole "Will they or won't they?" thing between Lucifer and Chloe. For as long as they can get away with. What helps me cope with this realization is, oddly enough, the fact that IMO the actress for Chloe is the weakest link on the show (though I suppose she's not as bland as her ex, who feels strangely like Riley from BtVS; yay, another Captain Cardboard). Part of it is how her dialogue is written: reactive to someone else (Lucifer, her ex, Maize, etc.), which makes her passive and in the "assisting" role from the stand point of the dialogue. Part of it is her acting. Could be just me. YMMV. Anyway, this means I don't mind more scenes featuring Maize or the psychiatrist or the Mom, or Robin Wood, I mean the brother. I even like the pseudo Dad/God. I hope he comes back! :)

Date: 2017-09-23 12:56 am (UTC)The Good Fight -- I'm going to try to get this and Star Trek Discovery on CBS All Access -- highly annoyed with CBS for doing this. Why they felt a need to do their own streaming service, I've no clue. I really liked the pilot episode of The Good Fight which showed on CBS, but couldn't see the rest.
[As an aside, I've been enjoying Mozart in the Jungle as a happy show, or comfort viewing. Thanks for the rec. Much appreciated.]
The Expanse -- is based on a series of sci-fi novels by Jame A Corey, (a writing team) who are actually heavily involved in the series. S! and S2 part 1, follows the first book "Leviathan Wakes" almost perfectly. It's a bit slow in places, but overall I've enjoyed. More interesting and strong female characters are addressed in the second part of S2, including a tough as nails Marine. The first book, which I'd read, was good. Not great, but good in a fun way.
I'm working my way through the last eight episodes. Haven't been in the right head-space for it until now.
Lucifer S3 -- it pops up on Oct 2 here. I posted on my journal what TV Guide and EW promotional blurbs from the show-runner's stated. Apparently Marcus Pierce is a very very different role from Clark Kent, and has a different global objective than Lucifer. (Whatever that means. I didn't think Lucifer had much of an objective outside of getting into Chloe's pants and kicking Dad's ass. Also what would be a VERY different role from Clark Kent? Is he a villain?) This is according to Welling. (Welling actually improved, believe it or not in the latter episodes of Smallville. I started watching for Brainaic too and then just continued because I liked the supporting characters. Haven't seen him in anything else though...and he was admittedly the weakest link. But this is true of anyone who plays Superman, so it may just be that role?)
The show-runners insist that he will tell Chloe who he is in the premiere. And state that it just might not go so smoothly now that he has wings. (Why it wouldn't go as smoothly now he has wings, I've no clue. I'd have thought it would go more smoothly...or would have been much easier with the wings. Just show the wings, no need to go any further than that. Much better than the face. And more convincing. She can touch the wings. The face could be an illusion, also he is vulnerable and has limited power with her - so easier to show wings than face. Unless he doesn't want her to see the wings or know? But then why do the reveal?)
And according to the executive producers/showrunners - this season is about Lucifer exploring what it means to be the devil and in doing so embracing his devilish side more than ever." (Again not sure what that means exactly. Although, if it means a darker season, like S1, and less procedural bits, I'm happy.)
As for the Chloe/Lucifer ship...it's obviously the main ship of the series, so will be drug out for two more seasons, then somehow they'll find a way together. I find romantic relationships in television shows like Lucifer to be predictable, highly frustrating and annoying, because the writers don't seem know what to do with them or how to write them. The non-romantic ships are actually more satisfying and better written.
Genre television show writers suck at writing long-term romantic relationships. Also I can always predict who is going to end up with whom, when they'll break up, and if they'll stay together. The writers aren't that innovative about this sort of thing. They follow a formula. I think the only show I've seen that broke with that formula was Wynonna Earp.

Date: 2017-09-23 11:15 am (UTC)I found season 2 a bit wobbly in the first half just because they seemed to have trouble balancing the darkness with the humour and it came off a bit wrong. It got better by the end, though, so hopefully it will work in season 3.

Date: 2017-09-24 06:51 am (UTC)I just read that Lucifer was coming next weekend and I am soooo ready. "Will", my favorite show of the summer, has not been renewed, alas. "Orphan Black" is over. I did really like the first 2 seasons of "The Expanse", but don't know when the next one is coming! Nor "Elementary". Ah well, there isn't much time for TV these days, although I don't think I'll need to do so much traveling in the next few months. I owe you (and the interwebs) an update, but the upshot is that work is busy, and there are lots of other fun things to do around here. For instance, the "Buffy" drag show is coming back!
I hope your whole crew is doing well!

Date: 2017-09-24 06:38 pm (UTC)What, you thought Ygritte had a Scottish accent? Weird.
No idea if he will be able to show them to her of course, but if he can't we can expect some jokes about not being able to get them up.
Yes, probably, because I'm really not expecting that to happen either. I think everything supernatural about Lucifer is going to seize up in Chloe's presence - except the desire thing, because that's useful for the police work.
Maybe it will be Lucifer who falls for the new lieutenant, not Chloe. That would make a nice change from the expectations.
Yeah, no, not going to happen - especially not now the show's timeslot has been moved to 8pm. Even in the 9pm slot, they only managed to squeeze in one vague reference to Lucifer's bisexuality each season.
And even if it did happen, I wouldn't like it because I just want Tom Welling to go take a running jump> :(

I am going to watch the new Star Trek series since I have Netflix, but I will probably finish season 1 of The Expanse first. I don't have an awful lot of time for TV watching so I don't want to take on two many shows at once. But I will definitely watch it and try to make a post about it.

Date: 2017-09-24 07:06 pm (UTC)Heh! Since you mention the episode with Fake!Dad (who, I agree, I really hope comes back), I assume you've watched the entire show so far, so I can safely tell you that Marcus Pierce is the name of the new police lieutenant in season 3 (so Chloe's and Dan's boss) played by Tom Block-of-Wood Welling from Smallville. I think there'll be more to the character than it appears, but he's also meant to be another obstacle in the way of Lucifer/Chloe, so the dreaded love triangle looms. Which I wouldn't mind, if it weren't for the the block-of-woodness of Tom Welling. :(
I fully expect the show to milk the whole "Will they or won't they?" thing between Lucifer and Chloe. For as long as they can get away with.
Oh yes, me too. I just wish they'd chosen some one a bit less bland to play the love rival.
(though I suppose she's not as bland as her ex, who feels strangely like Riley from BtVS; yay, another Captain Cardboard).
You don't like Dan? Aww, I love him. I love his weird bromance-y thing with Lucifer. I...kind of agree about Lauren German. She has been pretty much cast in the role of straight woman here. I do think her character is pretty well fleshed out, though, and it's not like Lucifer has to save Chloe every single episode. ;)
You saying you think she's mainly reactive is possibly something a lot of people have said, though, because apparently one of the early season 3 storylines is meant to be Chloe taking a step back from Lucifer because she hears herself being referred to as 'Lucifer's partner', instead of vice versa.
Like you, I'm hoping for more family stuff with Lucifer, Maze and Amenadiel, and I'm really hoping for more angelic siblings to turn up.

My absolute pleasure, honestly. I love that show. It's my happy place. Funny, smart, great characters and so much beautiful music.
Interesting to learn that The Expanse season 2 is split into two parts. I feel even more intrigued now, and I was already very intrigued after only three episodes. So well done. I don't have a favourite character yet. I'm not sure it's the sort of show where you should have one in case something awful happens to them.
Haven't seen him in anything else though...and he was admittedly the weakest link. But this is true of anyone who plays Superman, so it may just be that role?)
I don't think he's really been in anything since Smallville ended. The Lucifer writer/producers made it sound like quite a coup to nab him because loads of shows wanted him and he'd turned them down. How true that is, I couldn't say.

I think he's going to find he can't show her either. It would mean such a huge change of pace for the show for Chloe to know that Lucifer really is the Devil all along. I think they may get there one day - not long before the show ends for good, maybe - but I just don't see them doing it yet.
Agree about the formulaic way relationships usually develop on TV.

Date: 2017-09-24 08:30 pm (UTC)Nope. I wish. But apparently CBS is doing the same thing with it's new streaming service that it attempted with UPN back in the day, which is use Star Trek:Discovery and The Good Fight to launch it. Personally, I think this is a bad idea since why would anyone subscribe for just one or two shows?
I'm guessing Netflix got the foreign distribution rights to it. (I sort of wish I lived in the UK for multiple reasons at the moment...political, weather/climate (it's 36 C or 95 F here today in NYC), and television streaming also access to new episodes of the Great British Bake-Off.)
My absolute pleasure, honestly. I love that show. It's my happy place. Funny, smart, great characters and so much beautiful music.
I just adore it. I keep watching it or The Great British Bake-Off to de-stress or for comfort. It's actually better than Bake-Off, in that I don't start craving cakes and pastries.
Roderigo, I'm half in love with. And want a tape of oboe music.

In the book it was Naomi and Julie, also I liked Miller. Holden is a bit annoying in both. Now? I'm not really there yet.
It is set up in an interesting manner. Season 1 - first half of S2 is Leviathan Wakes, although they bleed in bits and characters from the later books in there apparently. Second half of S2 is Caliban..(second book in the series) when they basically follow up on the big event at the end of Leviathan Wakes.
I think it is well plotted and has great world-building and some interesting characters. But, the pacing is a bit slow.
BSG had better pacing. As did Farscape. There's a lot going on in it. And it's a well-developed world in part because they have the books which already set it up for them.
That said the second half of S2 has been putting me to sleep. Pacing problems.
The Lucifer writer/producers made it sound like quite a coup to nab him because loads of shows wanted him and he'd turned them down. How true that is, I couldn't say.
Well, I know Supergirl wanted him badly. (I can understand why he turned them down. I mean...why play the same role?)
I thought he was doing one of the military shows either Seals or Swat. There's about four of them premiering this year: Seal (David Boreanze's new show), SWAT (which is a reboot of a 1960s or 70s show?? I don't remember it..so..maybe earlier), Valor (Anne Hech's new one), and The Brave (CW -- think Quantico, we have a female pilot who gets missing in action). I thought he was doing one of those and that's why he didn't do Supergirl. Was somewhat surprised to see him nabbed for Lucifer. Admittedly Ellis is very tall, so they need someone similarly attractive and tall to go up against him. But...I sort of wish they didn't feel the need to go there, because it's well so..formulaic.
I'd prefer the go the route of the comics, which admittedly I can't remember that clearly but had to have been more interesting.

Date: 2017-09-25 06:44 am (UTC)I would be very surprised if the Drag!Buffy is on YouTube. I did look, and found a bit of one of their Star Trek shows of a similar natures, but no Buffy. I think that this year's show might be a different set of episodes. Last year was a mash-up of Welcome to the Hellmouth, The Harvest, and Angel. There was much to recommend it, but Angel doing extremely emotive Tai Chi was pretty great, as was the Joyce/Buffy huff-off. If this gets to be a regular October event, we can plan ahead!

I still like it a lot, but haven't gotten very far into the second season yet. (Black Sails has swallowed me whole.)
I think the plot is so good because it is based on a book series, and those just tend to be better researched and tighter than the usual tv fare. I agree that the characters are kinda traditional, Joe Miller most of all as the cynical drunk investigator archetype. But they're still well rounded, and I like all the strong women especially.

I've watched another episode of The Expanse since writing this post too, and have to say I like it more than ever.
I've no idea what else Tom Welling might be doing, but I hope it'll take him far away from Lucifer after this season. Thanks for the link to The Expanse comm. When I've finished season 1 I will come back and read your posts about it. I think what impresses me the most about it so far is how well researched all the science is (as far as I, a non-scientist, can tell anyway).

Date: 2017-09-28 07:54 pm (UTC)I've watched the first two episodes now, btw, and unlike with The Good Fight, I don't feel you're missing an awful lot.
Good to know. Thanks. Only saw the first half of the first episode, it was cut off due to a football game, which pushed everything back, and as a result the DVR recorded half 60 Minutes (Oprah on how to deal with Trump) and half Discovery. (highly annoying). I liked what I saw, but not enough to pay for it. Co-worker saw both the Good Fight pilot and Discovery and said GF was a 10, Discovery an 8, and considering he wasn't going to pay for GF, why would he pay for Discovery?
Considering I loved the Good Fight and was okay with Discovery, not going to pay for it either. (It's a pay just for that season option, so similar to pay per view.)
Have seen the latest preview, including a scene with Welling's character and Lucifer, and he's just as bland as I remember. What's more, without subtitles, I can't make out a word he says. :(
Ugh. A mumbler. I preferred Detective Dan. Welling didn't do much for me on Smallville (I watched it in spite of him, which was easy to do in the later seasons because they focused more on everyone else. Welling was the weak link. There's a reason he hasn't been in much since.) I agree - bland. I don't tend to like the pretty buff model boys who can't act. ;-)

Date: 2017-09-29 04:59 pm (UTC)Agreed. Hollywood keeps doing this...hiring model wannabe actors. It's annoying. Lots of American TV shows are full of them. And they all look alike. I can't tell them apart. Welling looks like a lot of male actors out there. At least Dean Cain, the previous tv superman, had some acting ability and looked distinctive.
