I haven't really made a proper post all month, have I?
I don't know quite why, given that I used to be reasonably chatty online. I've been busy, but lots of you are busy and you still manage to post. I dunno. :(
I do know that expecting anyone to comment on my posts when I've hardly been commenting myself for weeks now is a bit presumptuous, but here is one anyway.
It's mostly about Lucifer, the beginning of season 3 of which is only ten days away now, but with mention of The Expanse, which I started watching the other day - inspired by a wonderful BBC documentary about the end of the Cassini Saturn probe mission, and these wonderful icons by
sheliak of photos of Saturn and its moons taken by Cassini.
Very vague spoilers (so vague they're not really spoilers at all) for the first three episodes of The Expanse season 1, speculation about season 3 of Lucifer but no real spoilers if you've seen seasons 1 & 2. Brief mention also of The Good Fight. No spoilers.
I guess it was inevitable, but I'm beginning to suffer the consequences of too-invested fannishness where Lucifer is concerned, the way I did with BtVS back in the day. It's not nearly as bad (I hope I've learned my lesson in that regard), but even so enough for me to feel extremely disgruntled about a certain plot development I accidentally spoilered myself for coming up at the beginning of the season. I won't say what it is, obvs, beyond that it's nothing like as bad as what happened in BtVS season 6 (or similar to it in any way), and that if I grit my teeth, I can even see why it was bound to happen, if only for practical reasons. Still miffed about it, though, and increasingly miffed every time I see fans raving about Tom Welling and how good looking he is and how they can't wait to see him in the show, and how glad they are he's going to be in so many episodes (15 of the 22, apparently).
I'm probably being really unfair given how long ago it was, but based on the solitary season of Smallville I yawned my way through so I could watch James Marsters playing Brainiac, I have zero enthusiasm for seeing Welling in anything, and though I know love triangles are a TV drama staple, I hate the idea of a Lucifer/Chloe/Marcus Pierce one. In fact, I hate the entire idea of this Marcus Pierce. To me, writing yet another character into the show just means fewer scenes for established characters I'd rather see more of.
And before I start to sound too much like a disgruntled 'Core Four' 'shipper in the later seasons of BtVS, I'll stop.
Nearly finished my (third, or possibly fourth) re-watch of Lucifer from the beginning. Only two more episodes to go, which I hope to watch on Sunday. I'm a big fan of season 1, have to say. It's darker than season 2 and I like that. Season 2 definitely has a softer edge, because of the emphasis on Lucifer and Chloe as a couple. And okay, I'm resigned now to the fact that Show!Lucifer, unlike his comics counterpart, is stuck in the role of rebellious teenage son who disrespected his father one too many times, got slapped down hard for it and has been sulking about it ever since, because the show is about Lucifer's redemption, not about his desire for liberty at any cost, but I do think it could do with more darkness.
Maybe Tom Welling's character will bring some and I'll realise I was completely wrong about him all along. Here's hoping.
Will finish with a repeat of my speculation that Lucifer's attempt to show Chloe who he really is will result in him finding he's unable to bring out his true face in her presence. I've been trying to keep an eye on these things all through my re-watch and, as of the last two episodes of season 2, Lucifer's desire power is the only supernatural ability he seems able to use around Chloe - as long as he uses it on someone else, not her. He hasn't used his super-strength in her presence, or with her nearby, all through season 2, and though it's not stated anywhere, I suspect he probably can't any more. So it only makes sense that his true face won't come out when Chloe's around and his attempt to show it to her will only reinforce her belief that he's a bit (more than a bit) crazy.
Finally, I hope being spoilered will teach me to be a bit more careful about following links on Twitter. In fact, I should stay well away from the place. It's pretty poisonous, and the occasional fun picture of the Lucifer cast hanging out together tweeted by one of them is possibly not enough of a reward for wading through the oceans of vitriol. :(
Anyone else watched The Expanse? I think I remember
tinny talking about it, maybe? I had thought of watching it a while back but Netflix only had season 1 and I knew there was a season 2 and began to think that maybe they weren't going to have it (even though it appears to be one of their original series, which is weird). But then season 2 went up, and then I watched the Cassini program, and suddenly it seemed like the time to watch it. I've seen three episodes so far and am very impressed with how well thought out it is. Terrific world-building and (to my admittedly limited knowledge) scientifically/engineering-wise very well-crafted. None of that would matter, of course, if the characters were rubbish, but I am liking the survivors of the Canterbury very much at least, even if I'm not so keen on the policeman character. Looking forward to watching more when I get the chance.
I finished watching The Good Fight. Have to say, I enjoyed it way more than the last three seasons of The Good Wife (the absence of Alicia certainly helped) and am really looking forward to season 2, which, hopefully, I'll be able to watch as it airs instead of months later. I do wonder, though, if Rose Leslie is always being asked on set, "Go on, say it. Just say it!" and, after some grumping and grousing, she gives a big sigh, clears her throat and then says, in her best Middlesborough accent, "You knuh nothing Jon Snuh."
Do you think she does?
Ironic, I suppose, that I've finally managed to post something when I'm about to go away for the weekend. Back on Sunday.
