Buffy season 11 no 12
Nov. 2nd, 2017 04:26 pmLate with this post too.
Spoilers behind cut.
As of now, there's no hint of a Buffy season 12, and some of the things Christos Gage said in his final Slayalive Q&A (which I missed, as I was away when the issue came out) makes it sound very much like he doesn't expect to come back and write it even if there is one.
I suspect I won't be back to read it either, though I've (for the most part) enjoyed season 11. The reveal of the Big Bad was a big let-down, true, and Gage's explanation for it - that it was the world that was the Big Bad, because of prejudice, fear etc - though it makes sense, doesn't change the fact that the reveal was clumsy, and not even necessary. There was already a cabal within the government - the vice-president, the minister of magic - no need for an ultimate mastermind, IMO.
Also, once again, the story brings us full-circle with things really not that much changed from how they were at the end of Chosen - the supernatural back to being the enemy in the shadows (apart from Harmony) and Buffy sharing the power. The landscape looked very different at the end of the previous comics series, here, it's cycling back to (almost) the beginning.
On the other hand - and this is why I'm bailing if there's a Gage-less season 12 - as a 'shipper, I found the story pretty satisfying. Buffy tells Spike she loves him and this time I believe her. She and Spike are a couple who actually seem to have a fighting chance of making a go of it. 'Ship-wise, I'm happy to end the story there.
I also think that Buffy was right to give Jordan and the other Slayers back their power. They deserve a chance to make amends for what they did. Also, her capacity for forgiveness is one of the most attractive things about Buffy as a character (even if it is, at times, pretty hard to believe in).
So, all in all, I don't think season 11 fulfilled the promise of its early issues. On the other hand, it wasn't terrible (which is more than I can say for the current comics season of Angel, not to mention Angel and Faith season 10). Gage does the character voices well and the story wasn't completely 'out there' as Buffyverse stories go.
Enjoyed it. May well re-read it one day. Don't mind if there's no more.
