shapinglight: (Thor Ragnarok: Thunder god)

I don't get to the cinema much as a rule (not sure if I'd been at all this year until I went to see Bladerunner: 2049), but in the last week, I've been twice more, once with M (Paddington 2) and once with K (Thor: Ragnarok). Paddington 2 was charming from beginning to end - better than 1, I think. Hugh Grant was fabulous as the villain. Didn't know he had it in him.

And Thor: Ragnarok was...charming too. In its own way. I loved it.

Spoilers behind cut. Nothing at all profound.

Yes, it was a mishmash of stories - lots of references to Marvel Thor stories over the years, not to mention a huge helping of Planet Hulk, which I never read because the Hulk has never been a character I've much liked - and yes, it demolished - literally - previous MCU Thor continuity. But I really don't care. Apart from Loki and Odin (and Heimdall a bit) I found the Asgardian characters in the previous two films really boring. I'm not sorry they're gone. As for Jane and her gang, I liked them a lot. Thor's interactions with them were my favourite bits of the first two films. In other words, the humorous bits. So, even though Jane is gone (IMO, dumping Thor offscreen is a lot better than being fridged), Thor: Ragnarok gave me the elements from the first two Thor movies that I liked best anyway - the humour and the Thor/Loki interaction. In fact, this was probably the best film out of the three for the latter. Some really good stuff between them, which got terribly Spike/Angel from AtS season 5 at times. I liked the Valkyrie, didn't mind the Hulk (best I can say about that character), thought Karl Urban and Cate Blanchett were terrific as Executioner and Hela respectively, enjoyed Jeff Goldblum's turn as the Grand Master, thought the CGI was really good and loved the music. In fact, I can't think of anything I didn't like - even though the Hulk was in it, and generally the more self-contained these films have been the more I've enjoyed them.

Up to now, in fact, my favourite Marvel films have been the first two Captain America ones (I don't like Captain America: Civil War nearly as much as the other two. Too many characters I don't care for - Spiderman, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Vision -shoe-horned into it) and Antman. Thor: Ragnarok is definitely up there with those three.

I want to see it again. ;)
