shapinglight: (Lucifer and Amenadiel)

Came back late last night so just got around to watching this.

Spoilers behind cut.

Lucifer is outdoing itself at the moment. Just as I thought the show couldn't get any more fabulous, it does just that, with an episode about family - more specifically, brothers - that not only ties in to the Cain plot but manages to include great scenes for every single cast member (including Trixie) and to pair up characters that haven't been paired up before - Pierce/Amenadiel, Linda/Charlotte, Ella/Maze. Can't say which of those pairings I enjoyed most really. Probably Ella/Maze, which included a mention of Maze's many demon siblings that didn't get cut this time but was mostly both characters just being themselves. The Charlotte/Linda stuff may not have been relevant to the overall plot, but it worked well, I thought, and it was nice to see Lucifer speak up for Charlotte like that - especially since he spent most of the episode being (as usual) completely self-absorbed.

To the extent that he seems to have forgotten that the last time he had a long conversation with Amenadiel -in episode 4 - he was unbelievably nasty to him. I didn't get the impression that Amenadiel had forgotten it, even though he didn't mention it, but it doesn't seem to have put him off sticking to his self-appointed task of watching Lucifer's back.

Which is a good thing, because I think Amenadiel is quite right about Pierce. Pierce is not a good guy, and Lucifer trying to help him in order to spite Dad won't end well for him.

The Amenadiel/Pierce fight was pretty awesome, though also puzzling, in that Amenadiel is clearly still stronger (IMO) than an average human man, even if he has lost his wings and his angelic super-powers. I also think that Pierce may well have hit the nail on the head about why Amenadiel lost those powers when he tells him that Amenadiel is no better than him when it comes to fratricide. Certainly, it hits home to Amenadiel. The difference is, though, that Amenadiel is sorry for what he did and is trying to make amends. I see no sign that Pierce/Cain feels remorse.

Hmm, maybe that's why he can't die. Mind you, I don't understand why he wants to, given that if he did he'd only end up in hell.

Great episode anyway. Even the procedural stuff was a lot less dull than usual due to the personal element with Ella and her brother. Plus there was the final confrontation between Lucifer and Jay Lopez, in which, for a brief moment - so brief Jay obviously thought he'd imagined it - Lucifer's devil eyes put in an appearance. Wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that, during that scene, Lucifer once again wasn't thinking about himself but about Ella?

No more episodes for three weeks now. Oh well.

I agree, another really good episode.

I wondered about them. That is a good theory, I hope you are right.

I also think that Pierce may well have hit the nail on the head about why Amenadiel lost those powers when he tells him that Amenadiel is no better than him when it comes to fratricide.

I disagree with Pierce on this. Amenadiel killed Uriel to stop him killing someone else, Cain killed Abel out of jealousy. I don't think those are morally equivalent.

Oops! I clearly don't know the canon of this show well enough to engage in meaningful commentary!

I noticed that too.

Interesting thought. But Mike also wondered why his eyes would flash if he'd lost his devil face.

Regarding remorse, that's hard to say. Cain has a lot of reason to be bitter with God, whereas Amenadiel may feel bitter but wouldn't let himself indulge in it. That bitterness is something Lucifer shares with Pierce but I'm sure Amenadiel will turn out to be right.

I also liked the fight scene. I agree that it seemed odd that Amenadiel was superpowered enough to throw a large man over a bar. At first I thought it was that most simply had such a long history of battle knowledge but then I also had to raise my eyebrows.

That's true. Perhaps the strength and eye flash issues are connected in that, as you suggested, they're repressed rather than lost by each of them.

I enjoyed this episode too!

I wonder if Lucifer and Amenadiel can manifest the powers they have lost when they don't think about them. Lucifer was thinking of Ella, and Amenadiel was just pissed off at pierce, not moping over his lost status.
