shapinglight: (Lucifer and Maze)

I've only managed to watch these episodes once so my memory of 17 and 18 may not be that accurate.

Spoilers behind cut.

Episode 17 was the one about Not!Beyonce, wasn't it (or possibly Not!Whitney Houston, going by the blatant The Bodyguard references)? Again, it was obvious (to me anyway) from the moment they appeared on screen who the killer was, and I did think Lucifer was made to play his bodyguard role way too much for comedy. On the other hand, I loved the I Will Survive duet in Lux. I also (especially in view of what happens in eps 18 and 19) think Maze's anger and hurt has been superbly developed and orchestrated. Her conversation with Lucifer in the latest episode (19) makes it clear that what's bothering her is a lot more than just the Linda/Amenadiel situation. Likewise, the development of the Charlotte plot over the three episodes has been wonderful.

Getting ahead of myself a bit, I guess, but there's really not a lot else to say about the Axara episode except that things that happen in it seem to have given Pierce/Cain an idea that he's following through with in a way that (I suspect) will leave us in no doubt by the end why he was cursed by God in the first place.

Given how wooden he was when he started, Tom Welling is really working for me as Pierce now, but where this show's concerned I'm fairly easily pleased, as everyone probably knows.

Episode 18 - the one with the 1950s flashbacks - was a lot better case of the week-wise. In fact - in terms of the procedural part of the episode commenting on the character/relationship part it was one of the best episodes ever, IMO. The only place the plot really fell down (again, IMO) was in that the murderer was on screen so briefly before the denouement that when Lucifer ID'd him, I didn't recognise him at all. Doesn't really matter, I guess.

As for the latest episode (19), the procedural element was completely irrelevant in most ways because the episode was really all about Maze and how lost she feels, and about how cold and manipulative Pierce/Cain really is. Those two plot points collided at the end of the episode, with Maze agreeing to help Pierce get what he wants in return for him helping her likewise. It felt like the season really came together too. The only remaining piece of the plot that needs to coalesce before we head straight for the endpoint is for Lucifer to realise that Pierce doesn't give a damn about Chloe. All he cares about is dying for good, and he'll do anything - to anyone- to achieve that end.

Not sure at all where they're going with Charlotte but I think having her in the celestial know is a good direction to take the character.

After being so wrong about the Pierce/Chloe/Lucifer love triangle being over when Lucifer 'broke up' with Pierce, I suppose I shouldn't try and second guess the writers again, but it's fun, so  So where Maze is concerned, I'm guessing that she'll do every dastardly, demony thing that Pierce asks her to do, until - inevitably - he demands she do something that'll hurt Chloe and Trixie. This is because, unlike everyone else Maze cares about -Lucifer, Amenadiel, Dr Linda - Chloe really and truly wants nothing back from Maze but her friendship and really and truly does put Maze before herself. That, I think, was what Chloe's talk-down speech in the winery was all about in the latest episode. Maze will remember that speech and turn on Pierce at last knockings. I hope so anyway.

Anything else that might happen - no idea at all, but it's going to be fun finding out.

(More)Trivial stuff: Loved the segway scene in episode 19, especially the random old lady serial killer enthusiast. Also loved the scene in the latest episode where Lucifer showed his wings to Charlotte, not least because Lucifer and Amenadiel managed to share space without fighting.

Do not love the Pierce/Chloe thing, as I still can't see this chemistry that Ella keeps wittering on about. Also note that Lucifer said pretty much the same thing to Chloe - that he didn't get the attraction and not just because of the 'bloke' thing. By which I take him to mean - as it's already well-established that Lucifer is pan-sexual - that Pierce just isn't the sort of man he finds physically attractive.

Also do not love that there's now a three week hiatus before the next episode. Or that there's still no word on the show's renewal.

I saw that duet coming from a long ways off ;)

One thing that bothered me is the continual double standard used in TV (not just Lucifer) about men being put into uncomfortable sexual situations. Substitute Chloe for Lucifer and that incident in his bedroom would have made very clear how inappropriate it was.

I had the same reaction you did to episode 18.

I'm not sure where Charlotte is headed either, but I think that without her knowing what had happened it would be difficult to do much with her character, which has already been shoehorned into the show with her prosecutorial role. I was completely distracted in episode 19 by what was wrong with her face. Did she get an eye lift? And Maze's hair has been lightened, right?

Hmm, I like what you're saying about Maze's likely role. I'd bet you're right. I'm definitely puzzled right now by what Pierce can offer Maze and what, specifically, his plans are.

Also loved the scene in the latest episode where Lucifer showed his wings to Charlotte, not least because Lucifer and Amenadiel managed to share space without fighting.

Yes. And Ella pushing so hard on the Chloe/Pierce thing only highlights how little chemistry they have. It's the epitome of telling rather than showing. Yes, I also had to assume that Lucifer meant that Pierce's fratboy sort of self was not his usual.

Given where the final episodes of the season seem to be headed I'm wondering if some big change is being planned for it. So far any changes have resulted in additional characters (Ella, Charlotte, Pierce) but I wouldn't think that would be the case going forward. There are already characters who have little to do (Charlotte and Dan) and Linda seems increasingly sidelined.
