Lucifer season 3 episode 24
May. 15th, 2018 06:13 pmWatched this early this morning, then was out for the whole day. Mulled it over a bit and have decided...
Spoilers
...that if that really is the last episode ever I can grit my teeth and live with it. Well, kind of. Okay, given that the showrunners (who I'm still angry with) insist Lucifer is a redemption story, it would have been better if Chloe had seen Lucifer's wings rather than his devil face as a way of learning the truth about him, but since the plan for season 4 appears to have been her learning to deal with that truth in all its aspects while Lucifer dealt with the fact that, despite Chloe, he still considers himself a monster (hence the return of the devil face), this was the way they decided to go - with Chloe seeing the truth at the worst possible moment, or whatever.
So if that really is the ending, it was rather downbeat, but it could have been worse. Chloe could have been shrinking away in horror, but they cut to black before she could. But the main thing is that she knows the truth that's been staring her in the face ever since season 1.
That apart, if this really was the last ever episode, the Amenadiel/Charlotte ending in the previous one works really well for those characters, and at least Dan and Ella both had something significant to do in this episode, plus some good character scenes with the leads. Also Maze and Linda's story ended how you might hope it would.
Tom Welling of course was still the fly in the ointment. His pretend upset about Charlotte was so fake that I'm surprised anyone believed it, let alone Chloe. Plus, even in the (really spectacular) fight scene with Lucifer at the end he just looked like this great big sack of lard being thrown around. Plus the whole Sinnerman story still made not much sense. I'm just sorry so much of the last episode had to be wasted on him/it.
Oh well, I'm still not hopeful the show will be picked up by anyone. I feel if it were going to be it would have been already. All I want to know now is what is going to happen to the two standalone episodes they filmed for season 4, which co-showrunner Joe Henderson says in this interview have been 'shelved.' One is Ella-centric, and the other - very intriguingly - introduces God as a character, though only as a voice, that voice having been provided by Neil Gaiman. I would so much like to see these, not least because - since they were meant to be shown in season 4 - they might provide at least clues as to how the Chloe/Lucifer relationship was going to develop post-reveal.
Anyway, until those episodes do appear somewhere (God, I hope they do, even if only on the DVDs), I guess it's goodbye Lucifer. I don't (still) know why I loved you so much, but I did. Very sad still that this is the end.
ETA: Should have mentioned, was gratified to know that at least one thing I'd speculated about was right - it was Lucifer and Pierce falling in love with Chloe that made them vulnerable to her. Not the other way around.

That was basically the same thing I was going to say.
No, the Sinnerman storyline was just pulled back in to tie up loose ends it seems (though it was convenient given the route they were going). I thought that whole final face off in what I assume was his home (full of, I'm gathering, all the art he collected over the centuries) was pretty well done and gave Lucifer the big reveal/beatdown that we might have wanted.
I hadn't realized there were still unaired episodes but I think it very likely they'll show up on a DVD set as it would be a big incentive to buy the discs given that DVD sales overall are down.
I was surprised that there wasn't more of a cliffhanger. While things weren't tidy they were nonetheless in a place where a number of conclusions could be drawn about where the characters stand. I suspect that had we another season that the Lucifer reveal would result in yet another will they/won't they season with Chloe now given another reason to stay away from Lucifer even as their relationship goes to a new level.
At the same time while Charlotte was definitely gone (and Amenadiel might very well not return), the look that Ella and Dan shared on the stairway suggested to me that the showrunners were thinking of getting them together next season. And especially if Amenadiel did not return I do wonder if perhaps they might have gone with a Maze/Linda relationship as well. At the least there was nothing to suggest it couldn't happen.

Date: 2018-05-15 09:13 pm (UTC)I wasn't too clear why she survived -- was it a bullet proof vest?
I believe so, yes, though I wasn't clear about it either. I just saw someone mention it in a review. I'd thought we were maybe supposed to believe the bullet glanced off that medallion Lucifer gave her. I'm glad it wasn't that. Would have been too cheesy even for this show.

Yes, it was really well done, and I was so pleased to see Lucifer use his wings in the fight.

I do hope so. I'd hate to think that they would never be shown at all, even though I've now learned that the Neil Gaiman as voice of God one is possibly meant to be some kind of AU, so may not give any clues at all as to what might have happened next.

That's how I felt too.
(and Amenadiel might very well not return),
I think Amenadiel would very likely have been back if there had been a season 4. The interview I linked to has the showrunners talking about Chloe having to deal with the fact that he's a genuine bona fide angel.
However, it also mentions that the Maze/Linda/Amenadiel thing was never really a love triangle. It was always all about Maze and Linda and their friendship.

Date: 2018-05-20 02:49 pm (UTC)Yeah, it is, though I am quite impressed by the fans on Twitter, who are still campaigning to find Lucifer a new home, despite having already been knocked back by the boss of CW (not that I think it ever had a chance of going there).

I think Chloe's initial reaction would be similar to Linda's in some ways. She would want to distance herself from all of them, more for Trixie's sake than her own. I don't think she would have been quite so knocked back, though, because so many weird things have happened around Lucifer, right from back in season 1.

Date: 2018-05-16 01:46 pm (UTC)Yes, that was a bulletproof vest. We saw the bullet squashed into the top of it when she woke up. Also in TV you can always tell when a major character is wearing a vest because they get punched back with more of show in the fall and - obviously - no blood. Chloe was shown sort of arcing back so I immediately assumed she was wearing a vest. If it is a straight gun shot that really wounds they tend to just drop and the visual emphasis is on the blood.

Date: 2018-05-16 01:19 am (UTC)2. There were 26 episodes filmed for this season??? That's a lot of episodes. If there's a DVD, they'll put them on it. That's what they did with Dollhouse and Firefly. Or they'll burn them off if they give streaming rights, also what they did with Dollhouse and Firefly.
3. I don't think it will be picked up either...this season had too many problems. Shame. S4 would have been interesting. Particularly watching an atheist deal with the idea of angels and God. Chloe's denial was partly because she does not believe in any of it, and saw it as just metaphors. I liked the atheist angle. Linda was similar in some respects, as was Charlotte. That the writers handled in some interesting ways.
4. I agree with you in regards to Dan, Maze and Linda in the episode -- their arcs were wrapped up nicely in some respects. As was Amendial and Charlotte's in the previous episode.
The only ship I was really shipping was Maze/Linda and I got that at least.
5. Also agree -- that Lucifer's use of his wings in the final episode paid off in a big way -- it really showed why the wings were important and how powerful he was. I loved that. They showed glimmers here and there throughout. So that was a good pay-off.

Date: 2018-05-20 02:55 pm (UTC)I hope so. There's meant to be a DVD. At least, one is available to pre-order on Amazon, so hopefully it'll appear at some point.

I don't think it was stated anywhere that Chloe was an atheist, was it? Being a rationalist isn't quite the same thing.

Date: 2018-05-20 02:58 pm (UTC)Yes! I think it may well be the only time that my Lucifer speculation was right. ;)
But damn, I would have liked another season to explore that, among other things.
God, me too! Even though the cliffhanger wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting.

Oh well, yeah, me too. It's much less of a cliffhanger than I expected. At least Chloe survived, Pierce died, and Lucifer told her the truth. Sure, a reaction (a season!) would have been nice, but I can definitely live with how they left it.
I also think that Chloe was aware of his wings (not to mention the ton of feathers on the roof that she must have seen), so she was kind of prepared for the truth, which is more than I thought we'd get.
And we also got him flying her out of danger, which was great.
I admit I liked this episode. It was an okay ending, they wrapped up everything but Chloe's reaction. Maybe it's just because I expected more of a cliffhanger, but this actually feels like closure to me.

Date: 2018-05-31 09:19 pm (UTC)Yes, this is true. She would have seen all the feathers lying around Pierce's body too.

It felt like that to me too the first time I watched it. Less so the second time. Now, I just feel really frustrated. :(
