She Did It Her Way: The Darla Ficathon
Jul. 6th, 2009 03:45 pmOkay, I decided to go ahead and just do it. Banner courtesy of the very gracious
ruuger.

This is the official sign-up post for the Darla ficathon - not a ficathon in the traditional sense, since I'm not going to try and pair people off with assignments. In fact, I'm going to keep it as simple as possible (for my own sake as much as anything, as I've never done this sort of thing before). Once people have signed up, I'll put up another post where they can post story prompts. So you can either pick up a prompt that takes your fancy or write whatever comes into your head, as long as it's about Darla.
The rules (such as they are)
Whatever you write must feature Darla in a central role. She doesn't have to be the POV character, but the story should revolve around her somehow. And since she's very, very old (sorry, Darla, but you are) that gives you four centuries' worth of history, plus all that show canon to play around with.
Any pairings are permitted, but if other pairings than Darla pairings are featured, it has to be in how they relate to Darla.
Your fic should be at least 1000 words long and new. No re-posting of old fics. No maximum word limit, the story can be a novel-length epic if you like. I certainly won't complain.
No bashing of any characters or pairings, 'cos I hate that, and so does Darla (unless it's her doing the bashing).
Deadline
Stories should be posted the weekend of Saturday 31st October/Sunday 1st November. I will put up a reminder post mid-month for the next three months (as long as someone reminds me).
And that's it. Please leave a comment below if you're interested in taking part.

Date: 2009-07-06 04:35 pm (UTC)You could write 2 500 word drabbles.
ETA: I suppose I should make that 2 linked 500 word drabbles, or I'll be guilty of breaking my own rules before I've even started.

Date: 2009-07-06 05:10 pm (UTC)Can people who aren't going to write fic put up prompts? I would appreciate as wide a range of prompts as possible, and it would be nice for non-writers to get involved in some way.

Date: 2009-07-06 05:39 pm (UTC)Really? :squees loudly:
It doesn't have to be long or anything.
When I put up the prompts post, I going to invite people to leave them whether they're taking part as writers or not. And I'll be posting some prompts myself too.

Date: 2009-07-07 01:42 am (UTC)Just to clarify, Darla can still be her snarky self when dealing with the characters she finds idiots, as long as the writer isn't actually bashing the characters, right? Because I love me some Spike, but I'm pretty sure Darla had a difficult time not smacking him over the head until her hand fell off.

Date: 2009-07-07 05:33 am (UTC)Oh, of course. By character/'ship bashing, I meant when a story is written with the express purpose of bashing a particular character or 'ship the author doesn't like. It's usually pretty easy to tell when that's the case.
If a particular character in a story doesn't like another canonically that's quite different (though personally I think Darla's supposed dislike of Spike is possibly exaggerated given that she seemingly put up with him for 20 years and she's not a particularly patient sort - but yeah, I bet she found him plenty exasperating at times).
Welcome aboard.

Date: 2009-07-07 06:18 am (UTC)Today was the first day in about 3.5 weeks where I had a look at my flist and was like, "Damn. I clearly have no idea what's going on anymore." Must get to both your polar exploration story and Terror Aboard the Persephone. Don't know when, but will make it a fic priority when I tease out the time.
Though my fannish activities are pretty meager, minus my judging duties for Fang Fetish, I'm looking forward to WriterCon at the end of the month. I wasn't on LJ when the last one was held in the States. Since this one will be held in Minneapolis, it's a perfect excuse for me to visit again with
Hope all is well with you and yours!
