Can anyone explain to me how you look something up on the Wayback Machine? I suddenly realised that it's only a few days until Geocities goes down for good and I wanted to check whether or not Sabre Shadowkitten's Spike fanfic site had been archived.

I didn't even think about that!!

When you go here: http://www.archive.org/index.php

There's two different search methods. You can search for the actual website by putting in the old/archived url in the "web" one with the "take me back" button, or you can type in a keyword in the search box up top. You can use the drop down to see which specific section to search in, or just search everything.

I don't know Sabre's url so I can't search that, but I did try her name in the keyword search and she didn't come up. Doh!

Everything's on her own site, isn't it?

(And, blimey, I haven't been on there in years! I still massively respect that she has PG-13 versions of stuff.)

Her site is definitely on the wayback machine. http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.sabershadowkat.com/buffy/btvs2.html But I think if it doesn't say Geocities in the URL then it's no longer at geocities. I could be wrong about that bit, but it's definitely safely archived.

I just did a 'whois' lookup (that tells you who has registered a domain name and where the name server is) and sabershadowkat.com (sabershadowkat.com) seems to still be hosted on yahoo, but I can't tell if that counts as a geocities site or not. Probably not because I suspect if you have your own domain name then you are whatever the next level of yahoo hosting is. A few small bits, like Spanking Spike and the Charles V. Barrett Fan Club (whatever that is) seem to be still on geocities for whatever reason.

I'm quite glad geocities is going down, it will neatly clear up a few sites that have my fic without me having to try to trace the owners. Including SS for that matter cos she pinched a bastardised and incomplete copy of Giving Him the Moon years ago, which as far as I can recall she never had permission for but I could be wrong and it has been there so long I can never raise the energy to complain.

I'm 90% sure that if it doesn't have Geocities in the URL then it isn't a Geocities site in the sense of being hosted for free by yahoo. It might still be with Yahoo!, but I don't think they're stopping all their webhosting, just the free stuff. It looks like she upgraded from the old geocities.com/Area51 address. But it looks like [livejournal.com profile] constance_b found it anyway!

It gives me a special thrill to Know Stuff About Computers. If you put your cursor over the links, you'll see they're all pages at the web.archive.org site. Safe from the vagaries of yahoo ownership.
