November, and the year continues its inexorable slide down towards Christmas. :shudder:

Anyway, I've turned over the page on my [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 fanart calendar, but yet again only managed a drabble as this month's calendar post. In fact, it started off as a double drabble, but I just re-read it, thought it was terrible and have cut it in half. It's amazing how few words will do when you try.

Angel receives an unwanted item of mail.

They're coming. The contents of the package are a warning, not a gift. They always did have a taste for drama, of the death and mayhem kind, and demons don't change.

Except him.

He doesn't know how they found his address. Not that it matters. He's not planning to run this time.

Drusilla smiles out of the photo, serene, nothing like she was when she belonged to him, while Spike looms at her shoulder, devoted. Doting. Deadly.

Let them come, he tells himself. He'll kill them.

He has to, before they spoil everything.

Before they drag him down with them.

I have no idea what the rest of the words were, but you certainly don't need them. Beautifully rhythmic and telling.

Such a beautiful image, and I really like what you did with it. You've managed to convey so much in so few words.

Love this! Perfection, really. Moody and atmospheric in just a few words. Well done.

I love this so much that I want to have babies with it.

Also, I just know that he's going to sit there a brood about it and do nothing until he's actually facing Spike across Xander's neck.

Perfect. 100 points.

The very drabble broods- its POV is so brilliantly Angel's. I like the acknowledgment of Dru's strength and power since Angelus was with her and that Angel's motivations to stop her and Spike are essentially selfish- 'before they ruin everything' and drag him down with them.

It fits wonderfully with the picture- almost palpably ominous and dark.

That is very nice. I love the way Angel is hovering between fear and confidence, determination and doubt. It fits the picture beautifully too.

This last drabble confirms what I'd been saying: your skills have improved. Interesting take on the complexity of Angel feelings and a perfectly fitting (and punchy) end to it.

It's what I love (and admire!) about drabbles: to convey so much with just a few words. You managed it perfectly! And Sue's image is of course brilliant.
