shapinglight: (80s man)

I've always had the (possibly mistaken) impression that women dislike Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and men love it. Is this true, or am I just projecting my Bohemian Rhapsody hate and firm belief that it was all downhill for Queen after Sheer Heart Attack, onto other women unfairly?

Not quite the right icon, but I don't have a 70s man one.

This post brought to you by Roger Taylor guesting on Jools Holland and me and S reminiscing about how we used to know Freddie Mercury's cousin.

I think it's just you! I love Bohemian Rhapsody and have 2 X chromosomes!

I loved Queen, especially Freddie. I saw them at Wembley in 1986 on the 'Magic' Tour and they were superb. A favourite memory of mine.

Will this icon do for 70s?

Huh? Really? I've always loved Bohemian Rhapsody and I'm pretty sure I'm a woman.

Double X here, too, and I love almost all of Queen. The only number I can think of offhand that I don't care for is We Are the Champions.

And, um, it's not 70s, but I give you early-ish ASH.

I love Bohemian Rhapsody and all other Queen stuff. I even saw them in concert back in the 80s.

This is as close to a 70s icon as I've got at the moment.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings about Bohemian Rhapsody, and indeed Queen in general. The first time I heard the song was over my alarm clock/radio, and I was still asleep. It gave me a vivid, operatic dream that I still remember 30+ years later. (It was not unlike the Chosen final battle.) So while it is bombastic and overblown and all that stuff that lead to the need for punk (*pets punk passionately*) I have a bit of a soft spot for it as the soundtrack to this weird dream. Also, my old band covered a Queen song, for reasons that completely escape me now, and probably did then, too. I don't really get them.

That said, MiAmor is crazy about them. But boys are crazy about Steely Dan and Kraftwerk, too. Go figure.

Still XX here and love Steely Dan & Kraftwerk too! Can I throw in Van der Graaf Generator, Focus, Prog Rock in general and Heavy Metal(which are meant to be male territory) to be declared officially odd?

I don't think this is a sex based question as much as personal taste.

I (XX) love Bohemian Rhapsody .
Only marginally related: I also fondly remember running 2km as part of my high school P.E. exam to the sound of I want to break free . I was a terrible, terrible runner but appreciated the irony.

I like Bohemian Rhapsody. I like most things Queen, except Another One Bites the Dust which gives me flashbacks to 9th grade. Ugh. My hubby hates We Are the Champions.

Same here, and I don't like Another One Bites the Dust either.

But I like everything else!

I love "Bohemian Rhapsody." So do most of my (female) friends.

I think Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett don't like it, though, based on their poking at it (and Queen in general) in "Good Omens."

I used to love it as a child, but I'm kind of over it now. Though it's still great to filk or parody. Or to sing out loud when you're drunk. And one of the first 'Buffy' vids I ever watched was an episodic of 'The Gift' and 'Bargaining' to the music of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', by Rowena.

I'm not the least bit typical as a woman, but I love Boh. Rap., and I love at least half, usually more, of every LP Queen have ever produced, even Hot Space.

OMG! YOU HAVE A LINK TO FREDDIE!

Loved "Bohemian Rhapsody" back in the '70s, realized the other day that I can still sing along with every word when it comes on the radio. It's ridiculous and over-the-top and always makes me feel good. And, yes, definitely female here.

I love
Bohemian Rhapsody
. Queen is outstanding motorway-driving music, but that track above all inpires the entire carload to sing along. Just as well, therefore, that the windows are closed and we are going too fast for anyone's eardrums to be assaulted.

When I first heard Bohemian Rhapsody (in the car on the way to university), I was completely blown away. I mentioned it to everyone I met that day, and everyone who heard it loved it. I think you may be alone.

I'm rather indifferent to it, to be honest. The only time I really hated Bohemian Rhapsody was when our high school orchestra decided to perform it. Ouch.

Another Bohemian Rhapsody lover here and at least the last time I checked I was a woman. I've sort of found my love for Queen again just a while ago.

I'm a huge Queen fan, I'm a woman, and I've always thought that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the most overrated Queen song :)

(Roger Taylor was on Jools Holland? I'll have to look that episode up!)
