Nov. 17th, 2009 10:22 pmI've always had the (possibly mistaken) impression that women dislike Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and men love it. Is this true, or am I just projecting my Bohemian Rhapsody hate and firm belief that it was all downhill for Queen after Sheer Heart Attack, onto other women unfairly?
Not quite the right icon, but I don't have a 70s man one.
This post brought to you by Roger Taylor guesting on Jools Holland and me and S reminiscing about how we used to know Freddie Mercury's cousin.

Date: 2009-11-17 10:36 pm (UTC)I loved Queen, especially Freddie. I saw them at Wembley in 1986 on the 'Magic' Tour and they were superb. A favourite memory of mine.
Will this icon do for 70s?

Date: 2009-11-17 10:39 pm (UTC)Hmm, not brown enough.
I refuse to believe I'm alone in my extreme Bohemian Rhapsody hatred. There must be someone else out there.
I saw Queen in 1974 (the Killer Queen era, which might also explain the bias). They were very good, but very loud.

Date: 2009-11-17 10:41 pm (UTC)Yum! There's a little Q&A with ASH in next week's TV book. I must get around to transcribing it.
My Queen love stops dead with their third album. Beyond that I cannot go.

Date: 2009-11-17 10:51 pm (UTC)Anyway, I have mixed feelings about Bohemian Rhapsody, and indeed Queen in general. The first time I heard the song was over my alarm clock/radio, and I was still asleep. It gave me a vivid, operatic dream that I still remember 30+ years later. (It was not unlike the Chosen final battle.) So while it is bombastic and overblown and all that stuff that lead to the need for punk (*pets punk passionately*) I have a bit of a soft spot for it as the soundtrack to this weird dream. Also, my old band covered a Queen song, for reasons that completely escape me now, and probably did then, too. I don't really get them.
That said, MiAmor is crazy about them. But boys are crazy about Steely Dan and Kraftwerk, too. Go figure.

OMG! YOU HAVE A LINK TO FREDDIE!
Hee! Yes, and what's more, I also have a link to Brookside, in that Freddie's cousin's then wife was a producer on the show when it started.
Very suitable icon, btw.

Date: 2009-11-18 08:23 am (UTC)Hoorah! I feel slightly vindicated now (only slightly, as the comments above will show), because you are a real, genuine fan and you think the song is overrated. :)
I still love early Queen. Wil never forget Freddie performing Killer Queen and how the audience cheered when he went offstage and changed his skintight white lurex outfit for a skintight black one.

ETA: Of course, I don't hate all of Queen. Just from Bohemian Rhapsody onwards.
