The What Do You Watch on TV meme
Jan. 25th, 2010 04:50 pmHaving bugger all luck writing any fic (sob!), so thought I would do this meme that's been going around.
Name a (current) show you can't miss:
Right now, Being Human is the only one, but Mad Men season 3 starts on Wednesday. Yay! I'm also looking forward to True Blood season 2 whenever Channel 4 get around to showing it. I was looking forward to season 2 of Dollhouse, but - more by process of osmosis than anything - have gathered that those people on my flist who loved season 1 are not so enamoured of season 2, so my expectations are lowered as a consquence. I am still looking forward to Caprica, though.
Name an actor that would make you more inclined to watch a show:
Quite a few. For instance, almost anyone who has appeared in The Wire, but especially Idris Elba (soon to be seen on Brit TV again. Hoorah!), Sonia Sohn (though sadly, I hear she's given up acting), and Michael K Williams. I'd also watch almost anything with Lennie James in it (but had to draw the line at Sahara). However, there's no actor - not even James Marsters, for whom, yes, I would at least attempt to watch stuff I wouldn't normally watch - who will make me tune in for anything at all. I was so bored by the one episode of Bones I saw that I will never watch it again, DB or no DB. Likewise, I couldn't get through all the episodes of Smallville JM was in. Not even for him.
Name an actor who would make you less likely to watch a show:
Nathan Fillion. I know it's irrational and all based on how much I disliked the Caleb character in BtVS season 7, but I really, really don't like him. I'd also avoid anything with that woman with the cleavage from Ghost Whisperer in it. I saw a whole episode of that show once by accident and have never really recovered.
Name a show you can, and do, quote from:
BtVS is probably the only one, though I may occasionally mutter, "What the f**k did I do?", when things get especially stressful at the Deathstar.
Name a show you like that no one else enjoys:
Um - Coast? Actually, I'm sure some people like it, but they never talk about it.
Name a TV show which you've been known to sing the theme song:
The Wire, True Blood, The Sopranos. HBO do great theme tunes.
Name a show you would recommend everyone to watch:
Mad Men, oh and the BBC's latest geology series, if only to marvel at the presenter's abnormally large nostrils.
Name a TV series you own:
I own rather a lot, I'm afraid, beginning with all 5 seasons of Babylon 5 (Amazon were selling them off cheap!), BtVS, AtS, Mad Men and BSG.
What is your favourite episode of your favourite series?
I'm not quite sure which is my favourite series, but if I go for BtVS, it has to be Fool For Love (Spike fan! no apologies!), though I also love The Zeppo, Hush and Once More With Feeling. If I go for AtS, then it's Not Fade Away, which I think is a great series finale. If it's The Wire, though, I'm not sure I could choose. Maybe the last episode of season 2, because of the montage at the end with the Steve Earle song.
A show you mean to watch, but you just haven't gotten around to yet:
Dexter.
Ever quit watching a show because it was so bad?
Many times. Most recently, Heroes and that thing with Joseph Fiennes about everyone falling asleep for five minutes. Can't remember what it was called.
Name a show you aren't interested in watching, not in the least:
Lots of these - naming only ones that are shown on channels I can actually access. Supernatural, CSI - set wherever, Hustle, Footballers' Wives (is it even on still?), Mistresses, anything cosy shown early on a Sunday evening and set in the 1950s, Merlin, any reality shows with the exception of Masterchef. Shall I go on?
Name a show that's made you cry multiple times:
The Wire, Torchwood: Children of Earth. I've only cried once in BtVS, and that was during that scene in The Body where Buffy tells Dawn about Joyce and we see the moment through the eyes of Dawn's classmates and teacher.
Oldest TV show you like?
Doctor Who, I guess. Been watching it since 1963.
Newest TV show you like?
Being Human, though it's a year old now.
What do you eat when you watch TV?
Chocolate.
How often do you watch TV?
Only when there's something I want to watch.
Do you have a favorite talk show?
The Kumars at No 42, but it's not on any more.
What's the last TV show you watched?
Babylon 5. I watched a season 3 ep this afternoon. In fact, I'll probably go and watch another one now since writing is a bust.
What's your favourite/preferred genre of TV?
Documentaries. No, honestly.
What's your least favourite genre of TV?
Reality shows. Bet almost everyone says this.
What was the first TV show you were obsessed with?
The Terrible Ten. This was an Australian kids' show from the 1960s, about a gang of children riding around the Outback (I think) on horses and foiling crime. I also loved The Lone Ranger and Champion the Wonder Horse, though I don't actually like horses much. They're a bit big.
What TV show do you wish you never watched?
Flash Forward. Remembered its name now. Also, Ashes To Ashes.
What's the weirdest show you enjoyed?
The Andy Williams Show.
What TV show scared you the most?
Doctor Who probably, but I was pretty much scared of anything 'spooky' when I was a kid, no matter how clunky and lame.
What is the funniest TV show you have ever watched?
Not sure I could pick one. Did love Fawlty Towers, though. And Greenwing. Also Spaced. ETA: several days later, because how could I have forgotten it? Father Ted!!
Which do you think is the best TV series ever made?
It's a toss up between The Wire and Mad Men. Bet you knew I'd say that.

Date: 2010-01-25 05:01 pm (UTC)Hee! I love that moment! (There are a lot of great "Wire" quotes, but mostly you need context for them to make sense, I think.)

Date: 2010-01-27 09:02 pm (UTC)True, and an awful lot of them get quoted on the soundtrack CD between tracks. Have you ever listened to it?
Nice to see you back, btw.

Date: 2010-01-25 05:04 pm (UTC)I've only cried once in BtVS, and that was during that scene in The Body where Buffy tells Dawn about Joyce and we see the moment through the eyes of Dawn's classmates and teacher.
I used to be such a stoic when it comes to dramatized television, but I am a complete cream puff now. I don't even think I could count the number of times BtVS has made me cry. I remember practically sobbing during Chosen, for which I was horribly spoiled, as I realized Spike's time was growing shorter and shorter. Then again, I was dissertating at the time and a complete and utter mess, so that may also have had something to do with it...

Date: 2010-01-27 09:06 pm (UTC)Well, if you can. It's a truly great show. Season 4 had me in bits, it was so good.
maybe over Spring Break in March. LOL That's pretty sad to be saying in January, isn't it?
No, not at all if you're busy, and I don't really have a lot of time for concentrated telly watching either. All the new shows I've watched have been after the event and in bits and pieces.
Then again, I was dissertating at the time and a complete and utter mess, so that may also have had something to do with it...
Possibly. There's no doubt that stress can bring on the tears much more easily. I wept buckets over Torchwood: Children of Earth, but things were a bit stressy then for me. Not sure I'd feel the same if I eveer pluck up the courage to re-watch it.

Date: 2010-01-25 05:37 pm (UTC)And this is me, an ocean away, with breath that is bated as you watch Mad Men Season 3.
I've also just started watching The Wire and am completely captivated.
And I think once you start watching Dexter, you'll get caught up in it. It's a great show.

Date: 2010-01-27 09:08 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed the first series of Heroes. After that, it's been one long, slow motion trainwreck.
Glad you're enjoying The Wire. Just you wait till you see season 4.
And Mad Men begins tonight. Hope to write a review on Friday.

Date: 2010-01-25 06:04 pm (UTC)Also, Ashes To Ashes.
Oh hell yes. What happened to the writing staff between Life On Mars and that thing?
I'd also avoid anything with that woman with the cleavage from Ghost Whisperer in it. I saw a whole episode of that show once by accident and have never really recovered.
For the life of me, I cannot understand how

Date: 2010-01-27 09:10 pm (UTC)I did gather that Joss was trying to cram five years' worth of plot into six episodes or something like. Oh well. I expect there'll be stuff I'll like, and

It's a mystery. Maybe Cleavage Woman has taken the chief exec of the TV company's kids hostage?

Date: 2010-01-25 07:02 pm (UTC)I wish I could like The Wire, so many people clearly adore it that it must have something. But then I lap up Bones with a spoon.

Date: 2010-01-27 09:12 pm (UTC)That's nice to know. Is she a Chunky fan?
As for The Wire, seeing as you only watched half an episode you can't really know whether you'd like it or not. At least I got through a whole episode of Bones before deciding it was pants. :)

Date: 2010-01-25 07:06 pm (UTC)Oh, ye of little faith. (Faith?) It's been at least as awesome as Season 1. I would argue it's overall better (though I have some issues with the latest ep). There were a couple of just okay eps in the first season, and there are fewer of those in this one. There is v. v. much girls kicking copious ass, so I think you will like it. Loads.

Date: 2010-01-27 09:16 pm (UTC)I got over the change by giving Neil Thingie the nickname Chunky (from Chunky La Funga in Goodness Gracious Me). It helped enormously. And at least we can catch up with lovely Nicholas and his brolly in Great British Walks.

I hope you like it when you get around to it. :is a bit of a The Wire evangelist:

Date: 2010-01-25 08:03 pm (UTC)As for Dollhouse, I'd say the first half of it was better than Season 1. How you feel about the second half of it will depend on how much you value a plot that makes any sense.

Date: 2010-01-27 09:19 pm (UTC):Hugs you: I really thought I was the only one. I've never been able to get through all the episodes of Firefly and it's mainly because of him. I agree he's less objectionable in Dr Horrible because he seems to be parodying himself.

I have gathered that the end of the season comes across rather that Joss is trying to cram 5 years' worth of plot into five episodes.

Date: 2010-01-27 09:36 pm (UTC)Yep, that's pretty much the extent of it. And we all know how strong Joss' plotting is in regular time *cough* so you can imagine how many loose ends there are when he's on fast forward. Just go with it and enjoy watching Eliza beat people up. :)

I must check out Mad Men, I'm not familiar with it. :)

Date: 2010-01-27 09:22 pm (UTC)Oh, I definitely will. In fact, some kind person gave me season 1 for Christmas (Amazon were selling it cheap again), so I must.
And Mad Men is worth checking out. I'm not sure what channel shows it in the US, though.

Date: 2010-01-28 12:19 am (UTC)Mad Men! Yeah, I don't get BBC here (sadly, because I really wish we did), so I'll be looking for it online. Will make a post of squee when I do! I already have one planned for BSG, because I'm trying to catch up on that in order to appreciate Caprica when the time comes.

Date: 2010-02-01 04:50 pm (UTC)And I hope you enjoy BSG. A lot of people hated the end but I kind of liked it.

Date: 2010-02-01 04:52 pm (UTC)I actually gave up on Heroes just before the final episode of season 3. By that time, I cared so little about the show I couldn't even be bothered to watch the finale. Sad when that happens. I loved season 1.
As for Dollhouse, hopefully I'll soon be able to judge for myself. Did you like the last episode? I've been avoiding spoilers so I haven't really taken in whether people were satisfied or not.
no subject
Date: 2010-02-02 07:23 am (UTC)I did like the Dollhouse finale! It wasn't my favorite episode of the season, and I thought it felt maybe a little too compressed (though understandably), but it was still a good story. I'd love to hear what you think after you've seen it.
