True Blood season 3 - ep1
Jun. 14th, 2010 07:16 pmSo, I watched True Blood season 3 ep one today and...
Spoilers, obviously, though I will be careful to use non-spoilery icons outside the cut.
.....damn, I love this show! Okay, so not deep. Can't imagine myself getting into deep discussions about death, love or feminism about it (which is not to say those discussions couldn't take place, because I think they could, along with ones about race and religion), but it's such enormous, campy fun!
I can't think of anything I disliked about the ep, except perhaps the necessity of Tara's descent into further darkness. I understand that it has to happen, because season 2 left her at such a low place she has to hit rock bottom and get through her grief, but I so desperately want to see her come up and out the other side. She's had such a terrible time. I just want something to come along to lift her out of that. Still, on the plus side of Tara's very down place, it gives us more Lafayette looking out for her and telling it like it is to her poor, silly mother. :loves Lafaytte a lot:
Everything else is good, from the Jason and Andy double act (yes, 'conscience off, dick on' is an immortal line -and one that Bill Willingham's version of Spike has obviously taken to heart), and their rather unlikely friendship is the best thing to come out of the Maryann debacle. Also very cute is Hoyt's and Jessica's stumbling attempt to get back together, rather stymied by the fact that Jessica has unfortunately killed someone.
Her attempts to 'make' the dead trucker were hilarious in a bizarre, out-there kind of way, because everything she does is so relatable to things a real teenager might do, except with a lot more sex and blood. :)
Sam's story doesn't interest that much yet - though it potentially could in future eps - but (as you might imagine) I loved his slashy dream about Bill. Damn, that was sexy, because Stephen Moyer gave the scene some serious welly. I hope someone makes some icons soon.
And everything to do with Sookie, Bill, Eric, Pam and Queen Sophie Ann was just great (and the gratuitous male nudity was very enjoyable too, thank you). I wonder if Eric will carry on helping Sookie look for Bill now? Probably not, with the creepy Magister breathing down his neck. Anyway, go Team Bill, 'cos Bill, though stuffy, is a bit of a sweetie, whereas Eric comes out this ep looking well dodgy.
Which is not to say I don't like him. I like them all.
Loved it to pieces. Roll on ep 2.

Date: 2010-06-14 06:33 pm (UTC)I could live with that. But then I could live with almost any pairing in this show, as long as Maryann stays well and truly dead. :)

Date: 2010-06-14 08:09 pm (UTC)his assSophie Ann (and I agree, Eric is well dodgy at times), loved Jason and Andy and loved Bill/Sam. In fact, I pretty much loved it all. And at this point I'd have to say I'm just about Team Anyone. I think I'm starting to like Bill and Eric more or less equally, as they're both interesting in their own very different ways. Like you, I also like all of the characters, and am looking forward to seeing the new characters who are about to be introduced. I'm just glad we don't have to put up with Maryann anymore! Can't wait for next week!

Date: 2010-06-14 08:50 pm (UTC)Right now, I'm pretty fond of Tara, Jason and Lafayette. Bill and Sookie leave me more or less indifferent, and Sookie is bordering on irritating (for me) on certain episodes. Eric stays a pretty much unknown quantity at this point.
Sorry for the double post.

Nods. Especially when everyone will, I sure, come into the house and say "What's that awful smell!"
I loved his slashy dream about Bill. Damn, that was sexy, because Stephen Moyer gave the scene some serious welly
Bill was sexy, smart and rather a bad boy by biting the old granny and then glamouring into taking money from "her Son".
Plus, wolves!!

Date: 2010-06-15 12:15 am (UTC)I'm so happy we'll be getting more Pam from now on. She had me clapping my hands with her spectacular behavior. Now I only need for the show to fix Tara and Sookie's relationship. They barely had any scenes with one another last season.

Date: 2010-06-15 01:29 pm (UTC)Me too. I wish she hadn't had that storyline in season 2. Eggs wasn't even that great a character (though very pretty), but his death has dragged her down to a very dark place. Hopefully, she'll manage to drag herself back up, with Lafayette's help (because her mum isn't going to be much help) and she and Sookie can have more scenes together where they aren't fighting, like they did in season 1.
Also, I would like to see more POC characters in the show altogether, especially vampires. I was hoping the Queen of Louisiana would turn out to be African American.
And Jessica and her corpse.
:snorfle: That shouldn't be funny, but it is.

Date: 2010-06-15 01:31 pm (UTC)It's so nice when you like everyone. For me, this is better than BtVS in that regard, because I never liked Xander, from season 1 onwards. I grew to tolerate him, but that was all. Here, I just like everyone, even when they're nasty. :)

Date: 2010-06-15 01:33 pm (UTC)I do hope it will. When will you find out?
I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. Can quite appreciate you being indifferent to Bill/Sookie in season 1. I was too. Their whole relationship struck me as quite cheesy - but then Jessica came along and made it all better. :) Have you got that far yet?

Date: 2010-06-15 01:35 pm (UTC)Yes, poor Jessica! Bill is going to be so cross with her.
:shakes head at self for sympathising with a vampire because she accidentally killed someone, but that's the beauty of True Blood. You can:

Date: 2010-06-15 01:38 pm (UTC)I agree. I wanted it to go on a lot longer.
Damn that was some fine acting from the both of them. Sam's body-language was especially to die for; he played it absolutely perfect, with the awkwardness, turning of the head and the submission. Damn.
Yep, I agree it was pretty near perfect. Had forgotten that Sam drank Bill's blood last season. Hence the slashy dreams. :)
Now I only need for the show to fix Tara and Sookie's relationship. They barely had any scenes with one another last season.
I agree we need for them to start acting like BFs again. There was a woeful lack of that in this episode, in which Sookie didn't really seem to understand how much Tara was hurting.

Date: 2010-06-15 02:33 pm (UTC)Other than that, though, I really loved everything about this episode. Sophie Anne seems a little stupider than she was in the book, but then she was prone to impulse, even if it was usually curbed by cunning. TBH, I can't remember if the V story element is from the book or not, though, so maybe I'm giving her more credit than she's actually due.
All in all, I think it was a tremendous start to the season and I can't wait for next week's episode!

Date: 2010-06-15 03:31 pm (UTC)Also Tara was one of my favorites in S1.
Also, I would like to see more POC characters in the show altogether, especially vampires. I was hoping the Queen of Louisiana would turn out to be African American.
Yep, that would have been cool, since they already changed her a lot from the books (where she's a fragile looking teenager).

Date: 2010-06-15 03:50 pm (UTC)I've just finished my fast and intense S2 marathon, plus watched this episode, and I couldn't agree with you more! :D
(yes, 'conscience off, dick on' is an immortal line -and one that Bill Willingham's version of Spike has obviously taken to heart)"
ROTFLMAO! No more True Blood for Spike! It's bad influence. Passions is much safer option for him... *nods*
Jason and Andy are hilarious! Their antics could very well carry a show of their own.
"Anyway, go Team Bill, 'cos Bill, though stuffy, is a bit of a sweetie, whereas Eric comes out this ep looking well dodgy."
As someone, who (for the time being at least) can't even remotely understand the appeal of Eric, I say 'Yay, Team Bill!'

Date: 2010-06-15 05:11 pm (UTC)Obviously I loved the Bill and Sam bit, and the nekkid Eric was definitely a nice bonus for me ;o)
I totally agree about Tara. She does need to hit the bottom hard, but I can't wait for her to rise up again and be the Tara we know. She's a totally different character to the Tara in the books so I have absolutely no idea where the tv show is going with her. I kinda like that!

Date: 2010-06-16 03:29 pm (UTC)I can't seem them killing Tara, but they do need to find some balance for her character. So far, her story has been almost relentless down since mid-season 1, thanks to her mother and then Maryann. Her relationships with Sookie and Lafayette, and a little with Sam, were the only ups. But she seems disconnected from both Sookie and Sam now, which is a shame. I hope they find some way to reconnect her with Sookie at least, while still giving her her own storyline.

Date: 2010-06-16 03:32 pm (UTC)I've just rewatched the episode and it didn't seem quite as bad this time. I could see why Sookie wanted Tara out of the house at that juncture. What's not forgiveable, though, is the way she seems to forget about Tara and her pain completely afterwards and focus solely on Bill, to the exclusion of older ties.
I do hope something happens to reunite them as friends before too long.

I do get Eric's appeal, though he's not my type physically at all. I do like his very dry, dead-pan sense of humour, though. In fact, I like it so much that it rather throws me when he's actually serious.

Date: 2010-06-16 03:36 pm (UTC)And Hoyt. Hoyt is such a sweetie. And I think his new hairstyle does make him look a bit badass. :)
I haven't read any of the books, so have no idea what is likely to come up at all, but I'm glad Tara is who she is in the show and that Lafayette didn't die, which I heard he does in the books. What a waste of a great character that would have been.
