True Blood Season 3 ep 5

I loved this episode. It was less dark than the previous week's (hard to see how it could have been darker). It was even possible to enjoy the nutty-as-a-whole-shipping-container-of-fruitcakes Franklin Mott without feeling guilty, because this week Tara began - tentatively, but she did - to fight back. Okay, so her situation is still very, very bad, but at least she's got a handle on what makes Franklin tick and can manipulate him - up to a point - into doing what she wants. He continues to be very scary, though, because of course he does mean what he says. He does love her in his sick, vampire way, and he wants them to be together for ever. Talk about marriages made in hell.
Also, several of the plot strands - Sookie's search for Bill, Eric's desperate attempt to save Pam, King Russell's relationship with the werewolves - are all going to crash into each other next week, I think, and fortunately for Tara she will be in the right place to be rescued. Unfortunately, unless Franklin Mott is killed, he's bound to turn up again later in the season, probably acting all jilted lover and wanting to kill her and whichever man Mott has decided must be her boyfriend. A bit cliched, I suppose (sort of Play Misty For Me), but James Frain is so good that it doesn't matter.
As long as Tara comes out of it okay in the end.
Other stories - love all the Eric/Talbot/King Russell/Bill plotty stuff. The Eric/Talbot scenes were a highlight, in fact, especially the first one, which made me laugh.
Talbot (making eyes at Eric): "I'm the royal consort. Please allow me to facilitate.

Very funny, though I suppose you had to be there.
I think Eric will use Talbot to further his revenge on King Russell (nice flashback, though to me it did have a slight Olaf the troll from Selfless feel about it, even though it was supposed to be serious). I just hope that Pam gets saved along the way. I did love Eric's obvious concern for Pam, which was very clear in this episode. Alexander Skarsgard is very good, I think.
Speaking of concern, it's clear that Bill still loves Sookie and Sookie loves him. Still not back on Team Bill after last week, but I do love how complicated things are getting between them. Wonder if he'll ever tell her about the incident with the exotic dancer? Knowing Bill, he may well feel the need to confess, and what then? And what will Tara say about him? Nothing good, I'm pretty sure. Also, the fact that he's been looking into Sookie's family's history is bound to come up, because no way will King Russell let him get away (if he does) without revealing all to Sookie.
Elsewhere, there were bits and pieces for everyone, some of which I enjoyed - Jason at the police station, Kenya's sarcasm, Terry weeping all over Sam, Jessica glamouring the couple not to give Arlene a tip - and others not so much. Not much interested in Jason and this Crystal girl, and still don't care about the Mickenses. Stand out, though, was Lafayette and Jesus. Wonderful scenes. Loved the way Lafayette went all shy when he realised this guy actually wanted to date him. His suspiciousness to start with also points out the fact that Tara is far and away from being the only damaged person in their family.

Date: 2010-07-19 05:14 pm (UTC)This is going to be the nail in the Bill/Sookie coffin (for a while) because Tara is gonna be pissed. Eric can get away with being there because, first, Eric doesn't know Tara and can legitimately claim that he's there trying to rescue someone. Plus, Sookie doesn't expect as much out of Eric. (And I also think she's going to accuse him of being worse than he is at this point and that it'll balance out in the end.) On the other hand, unless Bill directly saves Tara, I don't think Sookie is going to be as forgiving. And Tara certainly is going to hate him with a passion, and that's going to be trooouble.
The Lafayette/Jesus stuff was so wonderful that I'm actually worried about a hidden agenda because first impression is that I really like those two together.

The Lafayette/Jesus stuff was so wonderful that I'm actually worried about a hidden agenda because first impression is that I really like those two together.

Date: 2010-07-20 02:18 pm (UTC)I'd agree with this, except that I enjoyed last week's ep, in spite of its horrible darkness, though it does leave me with the sneaking feeling that Ball and co don't know they went too far with certain characters (ie. Bill).
Sam's family are still a crashing bore, unfortunately.
Thanks for the heads up about Crystal. I've been trying to guess what she is, but can't. Is she a fairy?

Oh yeah, there are going to be huge cracks in their relationship very soon I suspect. Especially since he ignored Tara's pleas for help.
