True Blood season 3 - ep10
Aug. 23rd, 2010 05:16 pmA quick review before I make a desperate attempt to empty my inbox.
Spoilers of course.
I think I agree for the most part with the reviews that
petzipellepingo linked to. This episode tried to pack too much in, involved some odd pacing and generally seemed a little weak after last week's. But then last week's was very, very good.
This is not to say this week's was terrible or anything. There was some good stuff in it, from Sookie's exclamation of, "I'm a fairy? How f**king lame is that?" onwards. I loved all the scenes involving Eric, Sookie, Tara, Jason, Bill, Jessica, Hoyt, Pam and King Russell. Not so great were the Sam, Lafayette, Jesus and Crystal scenes. I honestly do not care about Crystal and her horrible family of Beverly Hellbillies, or whatever they are. I also find I don't care about Sam's shady past, though his cold blooded murder of the male grifter had plenty of shock value. Arlene's scene with Terry was very sweet, though, and though the Lafayette/Jesus V trip went on far too long, I do like those two together, so I'll give them a pass.
I felt so, so sorry for Tara in this episode. Her scene with Jason was heartbreaking. I was so glad he didn't tell her he was the one who shot Eggs - except that then he did tell her and ruin it all. And now where's Tara run off to? And Sookie - if Tara's revelation about the way Bill abandoned her to Franklin in King Russell's house doesn't make Sookie turn her back on Bill at least for a while I shall be very disappointed indeed in Sookie.
Of the other scenes, Russell's goodbye to 'Talbot' was shocking and disturbing, just as it was meant to be, I adored the Hoyt/Jessica make-up scene, and all the Pam/Eric, Eric/Sookie scenes were wonderfully done. I loved Pam's reaction to Eric's telling her to stop interfering - reminding him that he would do anything for Godric is about as close as she'll ever come, I guess, to saying she will do anything for Eric. And it got through to him, because he seems to have given up his refusal to use Sookie against Russell in an instant. I honestly don't know what to make of Eric at the end of this episode, but I hope the Eric/Sookie 'shippers got a little of what they want. And only two episodes left to go. It's all getting very exciting indeed.
Oh, and congrats to Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, who I see have got married.

Date: 2010-08-23 04:28 pm (UTC)Nods. The Terry/Arlene, Hoyt/Jessica & Pam/Eric scenes were the best things about the episode. And discovering Sam's less than stellar past and Russell's loony reaction to Talbot's death were the most shocking of the night.
At least the previews for next week look there's a lot more action, which is good because that the next to the last episode of this Season.

As for Sookie and Eric, that kiss really was quite pointless. I think on this show I just don't ship Sookie (or Bill). I was quite glad when he chained her up in the end.

Date: 2010-08-23 09:23 pm (UTC)They're such a lovely couple! I did half-wonder if Tommy attacked Hoyt expecting just such an outcome and was sort of acting as matchmaker, but it's not likely given Hoyt's injury and that Tommy is a bit of a git.
And Pam/Eric. Love how Eric made his will.
Ooh, yes, and Pam being all stompy. But you're right, it was a pointless kiss, given that Sookie obviously wasn't really into it, and Eric went back on his word about not involving her almost immediately.
I do find them hot as a couple, though.

Date: 2010-08-23 06:29 pm (UTC)I don't like Bill anymore, if you hadn't figured that from my passive agressive review of episode 10.
I do wonder if the rl Moyer/Paquin romance has had any influence on the "putting Sookie/Eric in the toilet" thing the show seems to be doing. Anyway, I think Sookie and Jason's conversation about lying vs. protecting Tara is all about Sookie and Bill, and it will become evident that Sookie's gotta drop that manpire like he's something gross by the end of the season. I liked Bill so much more when Lorena was around to torment him. What does that say about me?

Date: 2010-08-23 09:26 pm (UTC)I had rather gathered. :) I like him, but it's okay. Feel free to rant if you want to. I'm sure the RL Moyer/Paquin romance and now marriage has had a huge influence on the plot. However, given what's happened, I'm sure Alan Ball must be able to see that he has to break them up for a while, even if Bill doesn't disappear the way he apparently does in the books.

Date: 2010-08-23 06:53 pm (UTC)The Tara/Jason scene was quite moving. Poor Tara. Poor Jason. Well done on both actors parts.
Jessica/Hoyt was higher up the fannish squee scale, and I can't help but love the gender reversal.
Terry? Terry is a man! In the best sense.
And then there's Russel. He's what a vampire villain should be. I love his twisted love of Talbot and his thirst for revenge. It's the right amount of really screwed up.

I agree. Poor Tara. I do hope she's going to get some sort of positive storyline now. And I hope I'm not right in thinking she may have been very unwise to bury Franklin's remains like that. I enjoyed the character for a while, but I think he has to stay gone now.

Date: 2010-08-23 10:38 pm (UTC)I loved the scene where Jason revokes Bill's invitation: it made me think of a scene in one of the books, where Sookie rescinds Bill's and Eric's invitation in the same time, and she laughs her ass off at how ridiculous they look, having to move backward as they do ;)
And I actually shouted at the screen when dog!Tommy attacked Hoyt. Unforgivable crime for me ;)

Date: 2010-08-24 11:32 am (UTC)It did look funny, I agree. Wouldn't be surprised if the scene you mention doesn't happen by the end of this series. Sookie's bound to be very cross with Eric, and if Bill does have a further guilty secret (which it appears he does) that could well mean a temporary end to Bill/Sookie.
Tara's storyline for this season has been horribly depressing, even though she had some good moments - and that's the third year running for her. :( I hope she finally gets a more uplifting storyline next year.
