Nov. 5th, 2011 08:50 pmI just watched Something Blue. Before you say, so what, until I watched those Halloween episodes the other night, I hadn't watched any BtVS in ages thanks to the comics. They've really soured me on everything Joss-related.
Which, of course, is one reason why it's so good to re-watch the show. It's a reminder of how just lame and stupid (not to mention how damn ugly) the comics are in comparison and how little resemblance they bear to it.
I'd forgotten so much about this episode, not least how laugh out loud funny it is. Best bit, probably poor old Giles alone with a Buffy and Spike who won't stop kissing, and who is, for a moment - just for a moment - genuinely touched when Buffy asks him to give her away at the wedding. ASH is just wonderful.
Also, early Buffy/Riley is so sweet. I wish they hadn't turned Riley into such a d**khead in season 5. Oh, and Willow really is kind of whiny. She's so mean to poor old Xander.
Hmm, which ep shall I watch next?

I think Riley would have worked better if they'd have not made it clear he was a romantic interest right off the bat.
Intervention?

Date: 2011-11-05 10:21 pm (UTC)Probably, though for me he would have worked better if he really had been just a TA rather than some sort of super-soldier.
Intervention?
I think that's probably next in line, though in the past when I've re-watched episodes I haven't really gone for the Spuffy ones in particular. Usually, I end up watching Band Candy.

Date: 2011-11-06 07:52 pm (UTC)I remember at the time being so underwhelmed by the fall-out from the supersoldier crap that i threw in the towel with Riley. There was something quite horrifying about that whole thing, and, apparently what the writers (or at least Petrie) took from that was "James Bond. Cool" :: head shake::

Date: 2011-11-07 02:23 am (UTC)I remember reading somewhere that Maggie was originally supposed to be more of a presence in S4 but the actress left or something? Maybe they planned to go that route but didn't feel they could.

Date: 2011-11-05 10:25 pm (UTC)It really is frigging hilarious. And Spike at least doth protest too much when the spell wears off and he finds himself kissing Buffy.

Date: 2011-11-05 10:28 pm (UTC)That episode was a revelation at the time. I watched the whole of season 1 with my kids, in which - apart from Angel - it seemed Buffyverse vampires were nothing whatsoever like humans, had no feelings that equated with human feelings etc. Then Spike and Dru came along. :)

Season 5: Fool for Love, Checkpoint, Intervention
I could keep going, but you don't need a treatise...

Date: 2011-11-06 04:29 am (UTC)Season 1: WTTH/The Harvest, The Witch, The Pack, Angel, Prophecy Girl
Season 2: School Hard, Halloween, Lie To Me, What's My Line Part 2, Becoming Part 2
Season 3: Band Candy, Lover's Walk, The Wish, The Zeppo, Doppelgängland, The Prom
Season 6: Life Serial, OMWF, Tabula Rasa, Smashed, Wrecked, Gone, Normal Again
Season 7: Lessons, Selfless, Conversations With Dead People, Storyteller, Lies My Parents Told Me, Chosen
Also worthwhile: Nightmares, Out of Mind Out of Sight, Passion, I Only Have Eyes for You, Homecoming, Earshot, Doomed, Buffy vs. Dracula, The Replacement, Flooded, Dead Things (I know, but it's a great episode), Sleeper.
That's a grand total of 51 episodes to love. About a third of all there are. Less than 40 hours of rewatch time, or a standard workweek. Am I too inclusive? Not discerning enough? Pfft. We love what we love, yo.

Date: 2011-11-06 11:25 am (UTC)I wouldn't include some of the ones you have, notably WTTH/The Harvest, which I found, and still find, very cheesy. I would probably have dismissed the whole series as a silly kids' program if I hadn't gone on to watch The Witch. That, I think, is a little masterpiece and I love the way it fleshes out Giles so quickly into something more than the American TV caricature stuffy Englishman he'd appeared in the first two eps.
In season 2 I'd put Passions before What's My Line. With you on all the season 3 ones and I'd leave out Lessons and Storyteller from season 7 and replace them with Sleeper and Never Leave Me.

Date: 2011-11-05 11:53 pm (UTC)I wouldn't mind the comics so much if Joss didn't keep insisting we're supposed to take them seriously. They'd just be a badly drawn, easily ignored adjunct to the show like the tie-in novels. I just can't see this Buffy ever becoming Comics Buffy.
But I'm enjoying the re-watch enormously.
