Misfits season 3 ep 2
Nov. 7th, 2011 12:15 amOkay, whoever is watching Misfits, they're not talking about it on LJ any more, which is the way of it, I suppose. I can remember lots of discussion about the show in the LJ comms last year, and this episode looks like one that could've caused some huge arguments
Brief thoughts behind cut. Spoilers for the ep
I thought it was really good and dealt with a difficult subject - well, you can't say sensitively, because this is Misfits, but without shrinking from any of the unpleasantness and without glamorising it at all.
But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe, wherever people are discussing this show now, they're fulminating about how it was so full of fail because Mel had to turn back into Curtis to save herself, and then Emma had to be rescued by him. I dunno. I can't predict any more how people are going to react to things. I thought it was very powerful, and I like Curtis a lot more now (though I did like him before).
Other stuff. Kelly was brilliant, as always, and Rudy - astonishingly - has turned out to be even ruder than Nathan. I really didn't think that was possible. Also, I hope we see more of Mel.

Date: 2011-11-07 12:23 am (UTC)Kelly was awesome as ever, but I thought the others were marginalised to some extent; I wanted more of the core-group girls, as well as Mel. The period starting was funny, though - and Curtis utterly clueless about the practicalities.
I miss Nathan, though - Rudy has none of his charm and is even grosser than he was.

Date: 2011-11-07 08:35 am (UTC)I will come to discuss as soon as I have seen it. For me there is always a bit of a delay until i get it.

Date: 2011-11-07 10:22 am (UTC)Not that I ever commented on the Misfits comms, mind you. They made me feel old.

Date: 2011-11-07 10:26 am (UTC)Yes, I did that too. I'll be very annoyed if the sex changing stops too. It was interesting, plus the girl playing Melissa was so beautiful.
The others were marginalised to some extent, but I don't think it was any different to other seasons, where particular episodes would focus on particular characters, but in the season as a whole Nathan took up far more space than he should have.

Date: 2011-11-07 11:00 am (UTC)But I think it helps that grrm himself is on lj and has thousands of readers and commenters. His fandom will always stay here to some extent, he was one of the reasons why I made an account back in the day. :)

Date: 2011-11-07 08:02 pm (UTC)Phew! That's a relief. No, really. And in fact, Emma's reaction to finding Mel with Rudy didn't really work for me either. It's not like she'd be naive about the possibility of drink-spiking - unless she knew that the only drink Mel had had was the one the coach gave her, but if that was the case they should have telegraphed it more.
I agree they seem to have rushed Curtis's introduction to the problems of femininity. I hope that's not because they won't be revisited at all later in the series.
And I liked Mel's impassioned feminist rant!
I liked that too. I liked it a lot. I really hope to see that having an effect on Curtis's behaviour, though really he wasn't that bad before. None of them are, except Rudy, and you just can't tell what's front with him and what he really means.
I need a Curtis changing into Mel icon. Haven't seen one yet.

Date: 2011-11-11 02:40 am (UTC)I enjoyed the episode's exploration of gender stuff, Misfits-style. I hope we see more of Emma; it would be really interesting to see her and Curtis with an ongoing relationship, especially if Melissa is still a part of it.

Date: 2011-11-11 01:55 pm (UTC):) I hope Mel sticks around too, but I suspect we've seen the last of Emma, even though it would be very interesting if she did stick around and had a relationship with both Curtis and Mel.
I don't think I've ever seen that done before.
Still can't find any Curtis/Mel season 3 icons I like. :( Wherever peoplea are posting these things (if they are), it's somewhere I can't see them.

Date: 2011-11-11 02:58 pm (UTC)Indeed! The only comparable story I can think of is the Japanese manga/anime Ranma 1/2, in which the main character is a boy who's a girl sometimes; as far as I know, though, he's in perpetual UST and never actually in a relationship.
